In dedicating the 1935 Pierian to Mr. Thompson, we are presenting the book to a man who has erected that greatest of monuments, the Record of Service. Having devoted forty-nine years of his life to the secondary schools of Richmond after receiving his A. B. and M. A. from Hillsdale College in Michigan, Mr. Thompson, in looking back over his interesting and varied career as a teacher and Dean of Boys, since rely says that he enjoyed every minute of it. He came to the Richmond schools to teach botany, but at first instructed in several courses, including algebra and Shakespearian English. He has seen the high school, from the ninth to the twelfth grade, grow from 150 to 1.500 pupils, has taught in four buildings, including that of the old Hicksite Academy, which was used while the present Garfield building was being erected, has served, at two different times, as acting Principal of Morton, and has taught several thousand pupils. His old pupils can never forget his teaching ability, his keen wit, and his lasting friendliness. He has derived a great deal of pleasure from becom- ing acquainted with boys and girls whose parents he taught when they were of high school age. Truly his life monument is a beautiful work, which has earned a note- worthy and lovable place in our hearts. And so, to that magnificent Record of Service, the Senior Class of 19 35 desires to add this inscription: Thy name is great. For thou hast taught and served many. O ivell done! We commend your pains. THEPIERIAN . . . . ' . i 935 To our Subscribers: We present the Pierian as a remembrance of the nineteen- thirty-five Senior Class. In giving you this annual, there are several points that we believe should be brought to your attention. This book is supported by subscriptions and income from other Senior activities. In order to have an annual, we are required to have a certain number of paid subscriptions. This year our campaign drive was very successful and we feel that we owe you a word of thanks for your faith and support. As our second point, we wish to express our appreciation to the school executives and the teachers for their cooperation and patience during the preparation of this book. Last, but not least, we wish to remind you of the fact that many people are involved in the publishing of our annual. Our staff gathered the material, and the printer printed it. In order to get the material, many students have donated their services. We say donated because they receive no credits, no money, no prominence. We, as managers, are given praise or blame, but very seldom do the students who work under us get any reward if the book is good. If this year book has pleased you in any way, we feel that is the result of your faith and support, the faculty ' s fine cooperation and patience, and our loyal, hardworking staff. It is our sincere hope that in the years to come when you open this book, you may find it a pleasant reminder of your friends and activities at Morton. Edward Harris, Editor Robert WissleR. Bob Bennett, a young broker in partnership with E. M. Ralston and Dick Donnelly, is engaged to Mr. Ralston ' s daughter, Gwendolyn. Gwen- dolyn, trying to raise money for a home for children, extracts a promise from her father to double the sum of $20,000 if she can raise it within five days. She manages to raise $10,000 but no more, and in desperation takes the money to her fiance and asks him to invest it in such a way that it will double itself. Bob bets his two partners and Clarence VanDusen, a young man whom he dislikes, that he can tell nothing but the truth for twenty four hours, the stakes being Gwendolyn ' s $10,000. The three men, thinking this impossible, take the bet. With this beginning, the play moves rapidly to a climax in which Bob, who has faithfully told the truth and in so doing found himself in many em- barrassing situations, must either tell a lie or lose Gwendolyn ' s affection by telling the truth. At this moment, the clock strikes the hour at which time the bet is up, leaving Bob free to claim the money and retain Gwendolyn ' s love. Logan, Ilbciliart. B. Logan. Center: HiU. Squier. Bottom: Peacock. Harris. Walker. The 1934 Morton High School football team was the best representing the Red Devils in almost a decade. They won three of their four North Central Conference games, making the best record Morton has had in the history of the conference. Besides this, the team defeated Technical of Ind- ianapolis for the first time in the history of the school. The team was made up of a well balanced group of players, all of whom had plenty of scrap and fight. They had plenty of weight and speed, and set a record that will be hard for next year ' s team to better. 38 Strong are her sons, though rocky are her shores. THE PIERIAN 935 Top: MikescU, Whelan. THEPIERIAN THE TEAM James LyboulT β Guard. Sammy demonstrated his all-around ability by winning the Gimbel Award in the State finals this year, making Richmond the only city to receive this honor twice. By rl Logan β Forward and Center. Byrl played either position equally well, using his height to great advantage. He was elected honorary captain and was the high scorer of both the sectional and regional tournaments. He played two years on the varsity. Charles WesteRKAMP β Center and Guard. Chuck was the backbone of Morton ' s defense, holding numerous scoring stars to very faw points. He alternated with Byrl Logan in jumping at center and did most of the backboard work for the Red Devils. This was his first year on the team. Lloyd Money β Guard. When Lloyd moved to Richmond, Muncie lost what turned out to be a very valuable reserve. Lloyd was a good ball handler and a cool, level-headed scrapper. He was a fine relief man and always had plenty of pep and fight. Don McBride β Forward. Don was a scrappy and dependable reserve. He was a good shot and always kept right on fighting till the gun went off. He was fast and a fine dribbler, always giving the game extra thrills with his one hand shots. Jim Logan β Guard. Jim was the type of player that liked the game most when it was toughest. He was a dependable reserve who had the needed speed and weight for the rough games. Besides a basketball player, he was a football captain and was on the track team. William Squier β Forward. Billy Squier completed his second year as a member of the Morton Varsity. He was a steady, although not a sensational player, who plugged away at his forward post to the best of his ability, which was far better than the average. His specialty was following in team mates and adding two points to the Red Devil score. Jacob Rock β Guard. Jakie as he was known to everyone, excelled in long shots, being the most adept at this of any Morton player in several seasons. Although he was the shortest player on this year ' s team, he made up for his lack of height by the scrap he put into the game. John WheLAN β Forward. John turned in a creditable performance when he was inserted into the game, holding the job of directing the plays. Al- though he was not a flashy player, John did his part in a way that was sat- isfactory to all concerned. Richard Wright β Guarc Dick was Morton ' s star substitute this vear. He was the fastest man performing on the Morton squad during the past season. Dick possessed an excellent basket eye, being one of the best long shots on the squad. He moved to Richmond from Newcastle. Billy Parshall β Student Mantiger. Billy was a very reliable and hard working manager. One must remember that he worked at every practice session and did more than just carry the Eberhart paT nted water bucket out to the players. The manager next year will have a hard job living up to Bill ' s fine work. Elder Eberhart β Coach. Besides coaching football, basketball and track. Mr. Eberhart was boys ' gym instructor and boys ' hygiene teacher. In both football and basketball, Ebby produced very good teams from what appeared to be very poor material. We hope that Ebby produces as good teams in the future, and that he receives all the honor that is rightfully due him. In search of men, we found these. 41 1935 THE -PIERIAN BASKETBALL RESUME TEN members of this year ' s graduating class banded together to establish several new records for Morton High School basketball, the main one be- ing the advancement to the semi-finals of the State Tourney. The team over- came jinxes, handicaps, and opposing leads in completing the most successful season in the history of the school. Richmond became the first city to be awarded the Gimbel prize twice when Sammy Lyboult received this honor at this year ' s state finals, Phil- ip Whitey Kessler having previously received this coveted award in 1924. The fine playing of the Red Devil team was one of the high points of the State Tournament. To reach the State finals they had to win in Regional and Sectional tourneys where they received the hardest drawings possible. The team made up for its lact of height and weight in its aggressiveness and its ability to play together. We hope other Morton teams will do as well in the future. THE PIERIAN I 935 BASEBALL MORTON ' S 1935 baseball team was expected to follow in the footsteps of the teams that have represented Morton in the past three years. In these seasons, the teams coached by Palmer Sponsler have been among the outstand- ing in the state, winning 51 out of 56 games. An opportunity to attain even greater laurels on the diamond was present- ed Morton this spring when the North Central Conference included baseball in its list of recognized sports. Five schools, Morton, Muncie, Newcastle, Anderson, and Jeff of Lafayette, put teams in the field. A Conference Tour- ney was held Saturday, May 25, at Muncie. This year ' s team had veterans from last year ' s squad for most of the pos- itions. The nine was made up of: Beckman and Lake, catchers: Owens, Key- ser, Clark and Wright, pitchers: Dietrich, Lyboult. Nusbaum, Wiesehahn. Don Green and Brinker. infielders: and Squier, Rock. Craycraft and Garaffolo, outfielders. The schedule, with the scores of games played when the Pierian went to press, is listed below. April May 1 8 β Morton 4: Whitewater 2.
