Am I only under the same delusion now? Surely not; this present seems to be generally recognized as a bad time by people of all ages. You have scarcely known any other kind of time. I do assure you that the world can be gayer, happier, and easier to live in than it is now. You have even heard it said that you are growing up into an economic system in which you are not needed. Do not believe that for a moment. So long as many lives lack the comforts and the dignity that could be furnished to all, scarcity of useful work cannot be the real problem. The problem now seems to be one of paying the workman. It will be solved. Perhaps even one of you will be the Very Great Person who will find the short cut we all look for. The sad plight into which the world has fallen must be to you a chal- le nge, not a discouragement nor an excuse for inaction. It is your chance to set up something better than prosperity; that is, order, justice, and a fair oppor- tunity for all. Whatever other qualities your fast-changing times are going to demand, clear and informed thinking is certainly needed. And so is courage. If you have enough of what is needed, you can make your part of the world so much better that you can yourselves make not Good Old Times, but Good New Times for everyone. Anna Bradbury. LIFE is a succession of events. The ability to interpret these events in the light of one ' s experience and to capitalize upon them for future construc- tive use, is one of the marks of the successful life. The life of the student is especially full of events. The past has handed him a chain of events together with its factual interpretation. School is primarily the place to utilize these facts and scale them to life situations. The mark of the successful man or woman is not necessarily in the accumulation of worldly goods, but more necessarily in the proper social, spiritual, economic, and emotional adjustment of his life to produce both individual and group harmony. My earnest hope is that your school experience will fit you to take your place calmly, willingly, and energetically in the ever-changing social and eco- nomic world of today and of the future. Discovery and Exploration (Sophomore Year) There was a time, not so many years ago, when Morton High School was discovered by Test, Dennis, and Hibberd immigrants, 383 in number. They were greeted at the fountain by a band of warlike natives. The new settlers had to dig for many weeks before they could harvest a crop of good grades. Chapter II. Diversification (Junior Year) People do not live by work alone, so the new citizens took part in social affairs, dramatics, music, athletics, and club activities. Chapter III. SupR ' PmaCY! (Senior Year) Directed by three capable statesmen, Jim Parker, Gerald Smith, and Betty Battel, and guided by able counsellors. Miss Bradbury and Mr. Farmer, this up-and-coming band of adventurers reached a high level of activity and civili- zation. If a record of past achievement is any prophecy of the future, one ' can safely say that the members of this group will continue to be famous in the years to come. From this company of settlers came Captain Tom LaMar and conquering heroes Eggemeyer, Vance, Bull, Parker, and Bell. These six gave Morton a New Deal in foreign conflict in that sport which is most popular on the Middle Western front by winning the sectional encounter and the battle of the Muncie territory. These splendid victories resulted in Morton ' s entering the great struggle at the capital for the first time in ten years. These sojourners feel that they have earned peace at last and they have been a bigger and better class. A non-stop flight through Morton has been completed by 245 students which makes this the largest graduating class in the history of the Alma Mater. All that remains now is to say Salve atque vale — hail and farewell. AND GoOD Luck!! The world owes all its onward impulses to men ill at ease. 27 - c THE PI BRIAN for 1 9 3 Wi miwmwmM Wmm 28 A real friend is one who multiplies your joys and divides your sorrov Little boats must keep near shore. 29 . - l THE PIE . As far as it lies within your power, you shall strive to emulate the achievements of the class of ' 34. However, we do not demand the impossible: allowances will be made if you fall short of our accomplishments. 2. Know this: Had not we, the class of ' 34, been at the helm of this ' great institution, surely, before now, it must have dashed itself to pieces upon the rocks of bad management and poor government. Therefore, as we relin- quish the control of this school, we reverently and fearfully charge you with the care and discipline of future underclassmen. 3. We have found, after repeated trials, that teachers in general cling to ideas entirely foreign to those held by Seniors. Hence, you shall desist from any and all efforts to argue with any member of the faculty on matters of school rules, discipline or grades. 4. You shall carry out those activities which have become part of Morton: the Annual, Mortonite, Junior-Senior Prom, and Senior Play. Spare no time, effort nor money to make these successful. 5. Last of all, remember that in higher institutions of learning scattered throughout the country, we, the erst-while class of ' 34, will be watching you and expecting you to fulfill our expectations. Woe be unto you if you fail to carry out these solemn and holy commands! 32 Great talkers; little doers. , ' ? 2 V0 THE WORLD B jS pTCH NG CLU5 ' R ' iVv1 g ' t S OOOSTER Ol8Lt STUpY ■ J°J 5U LL W£6STEa CL !Mm UOCATIONAL COUMQ I II ' Vce CLUO PSYCHOtOOV CLWJ ' ; OAu TENN.S -r ' : A « SJ . John was the star of the B team last year, and made good this year on the A team. He is six feet, one inch tall. Eggy specialized in shots from the side of the floor and possess- es an almost uncanny ability to hit them. He also played a fine floor game. He will be graduated this year. Tom LaMar — Center. This was Tom ' s thirdo year of varsity play, and he will be missed greatly next year. He is.six feet four inches tall and was cfassed as one of the out- standing centers in the state. His best shot was a hook shot with either hand. He was elected honorary cap- tain of the team. Glen Bull — Guard. Glen came to Morton from Chicago, and was in- eligible for a year because of I. H. S. A. A. residence rule. He played more than half the season last year. He was classed as the best bankboard man in the state by Coach Piggy Lambert, of Purdue. He is six feet three. inches tall, and will be graduat- ed this year. Vernon Bell — Forward. Although Kike is only five feet eight inches tall, he more than made up for his lack of height in speed and basket shooting. He will be graduated this year. Byrl Logan — Forward. Byrl be- gan the season playing center, but ended the year at one of the forward positions. He probably will play the pivot position next year. He is six feet two inches tall and his height helped the team considerably in con- trolling the ball. His play in the tourney was especially outstanding. Richard Harding — Student Mgr. Dick has worked hard for three years as a student manager and received his manager letter award this year. A manager has a hard job and Dick did everything a manager could do to help the team and the coach. Deeds are greater James Lybovlt— Forward. Sam- my played either guard or forward, and was equally proficient at either post. He was probably the best long shot on the team. His basket shooting was the feature of nearly every game. Sammy has one more year of competition, and in all prob- ability will be one of the mainstays of next year ' s five. Paul Vance — Guard. Vance was a member of the B team for a short time after he came to Morton last year from Sweetser. He was then promoted to the A team. Paul was fast, shifty and a fair bas- ket shot. He directed the play of the team and turned in a fine perfor- mance in almost every game. He will be graduated this year. James Parker — Guard. This was Squcaky ' s first year to play on the A team. Although he did not play as a regular, he gave a fine ac- count of himself whenever he broke into the game. He is six feet tall. He will be graduated this year. Bill Squires — Center. Bill played on the B team most of the season, but was placed on the tourney team. He was an able substitute for LaMar, and scored in nearly every game he played, no matter how short the time. He has one more year. His- play in the tourneys was also out- standing. Jakie Rock — Guard. Jakie also played most of the season on the B team and was promoted to the A team. His ability to connect on long shots will make him a valuable man for next year ' s team. Elder EbeRHART — Coach. Ebbie worked diligently to produce a win- ning team this year and his efforts were not in vain. A coach has a hard job. since it is impossible to please everyone. Ho tolerated snme 30.000 other Richmond Coaches all season, and he deserves nothing but praise for his splendid work, than words. 3 5 THE PIERIAN foe 1934 y ' Basketball Resume THE team that represented Morton High School in the basketball court this year may be justly classed as the best quintet Morton has produced since the fine team of 1924. To this years ' basketeers also goes the honor of being the first Morton team to go to the State tourney since 1924. At the State tourney, the Red Devils succeeded in defeating Beaver Dam, thir first round opponent, but they lost a heart-breaking battle to Jasper in their second-round game. The Red Devils finished the season vi ith a record of 1 9 wins, 1 1 losses. This included the games played in the Blind, Sectional, Regional, and State tourneys. Although the team did not win the State championship title, it gave a splendid account of itself, and displayed fine sportsmanship during the entire tournament. Not only in the tourneys, but also during the entire season, the team played as well as it possibly could. ' The Baseball Team A TEAM that has been classed as one of the best in the state has repre- ■ - sented Morton High School for the past two seasons. Another team of the highest calibre carried the colors of the school again this year. Out of a total of 37 games played in the seasons of 1932 and 1933, the Red Devils succeeded in winning 34 of them, and they continued to play a superior brand of ball during the 19 34 season. This is an exceptionally fine record for a high school baseball team. Only two teams, Washington, of Indianapolis, and Greenfield, succeeded in conquering the Red Devils in 1932 and 193 3. These defeats were suffered two years ago, near the end of the season, and both were lost by small margins. Greenfield defeated the Red Davils twice. The Sandlot League, organized four years ago, has done much in devel- oping players for the Morton nines. Boys who played in this league received valuable training which they could not have secured otherwise. Nearly every player on the Morton baseball team for the past two seasons, received his earlier training in the Sandlot League. Coach Palmer Sponsler deserves the utmost praise in turning out so fine a team. Future Morton teams will do well to equal the most enviable re- cord established by this team. Diligence i.s the mother of good luck. 37 ■■■0l THE PIERIAN for 7 P i ? l -- FOOTBALL 9J Uberhort co i. . Although the team did not win all its games, the attitude of the players amply compensated for the reverses. Decisively defeating Rushville. Noblesville. and Stewart.
