There ap- peared the mark of a tiny shoreline in this myriad of shimmering light and it arose out of the heat, the light, and the endless green glare and poised itself as an island. Guam commands the mid-Pacific, she is the defensive keypost of the South Sea, the potent guardian of a south- ern gate. The two airfields on the island and the naval base in the south help to deter the ever-present threat of war in this theatre.
