For Seniors, it is the begin- ning of the end of a journey through 11 years of schooling β a journey thru Alabama history, binary num- bers, slimy worms, and exercise-sore muscles. The 7th grade students are at the beginning of their journey in high school. Their first experience at MJ is often filled with anxiety β where do I go next? where is Room 1? how do I get to the P.E. locker room? 20 minutes for lunch, is that all? Assembly programs with daily reminders, along with the student handbook help to get students back into the groove of school discipline. School buses loaded with bubbling students arrive just in time for roll call β and school begins. Seniors, jun- iors, sophomores, freshmen, eighth graders, and seventh graders alike β all participate in the dally routine of going to classes, eating in the lunchroom, attending sports events, and doing homework (or classwork). Special events for entertainment as well as cultural development are provided. The Up With People singing group gave an exciting musi- cal concert and Mrs. Kathryn Tucker Windham (author of THIRTEEN ALA- BAMA GHOSTS) thrilled the student body with her tales of ghostly things. There ' s never a dull moment at MJ β we ' re full of life for each month brings another event β football, Christmas, volleyball, basketball, ordering of caps and gowns, baseball, senior prom, graduation, and finally the last day of school β That ' s life at MJ! Lovely wahines (girls) adorned with the traditional leis began the exciting night with the Hawaiian wedding song. Competition in evening gown and sportswear gave the pageant that spe- cial touch of color as each of the 50 contestants for the cov- eted Miss TORCH title made her debut before a crowded gym. Preliminary judging included interviews privately and in groups during the day. Lunch in the Home Ec Department also gave the team of judges added incite for their final deci- sion. Judges were Mrs. Karen Allen of Elan Modeling Agency; Mr. Stephen Toney of Sears Roebuck in Vestavia, and Mrs. Sharon Wright from the Jefferson County Board of Educa- tion. Master of Ceremonies was Mr. Phillip Renda, Jr., former MJ Band Director. Escorting the contestants were Tommy Lawrence and Matt Rowell. It was a night filled with wonderful memories. This is especially true during the MISS TORCH pageant. The reward for cheerfulness, friendli- ness, cooperation, and helpfulness during all pageant activities is to be voted on by the contestants themselves as Miss Congeniality. Fifty young ladies were eligible for the coveted title. We congratulate the 1981 Miss Congen- iality β Miss Dina Higginbotham 80 Band ' s Best Seniors Sue Ann Layne Displaying superior musicianship as well as leadership (which is so very important to every band program), this year ' s outstanding senior band members certainly deserve this honor. Sue Ann plays flute and piccolo and has been a member of the band for five years. She has been very active in all instrumental competitions from which she has received 7 superior rating medals. Competitions have included: solo and ensemble, All-County Band, and Sam- ford University ' s Honor Band. Sue Ann has also been con- Jeff Taylor cert mistress for the past 2 years in Symphonic Band and was a majorette for the 1980-81 season. Jeff Taylor plays tuba, trumpet, and baritone and has been a member of the band for 5 years. He has received honors and medals from solo and ensemble and All- County Band, has served on the band council for several years, and was voted as Band President for 1980-81 school year. We congratulate these two students for their excellence in music. 81 Valedictorians β Perfect Grades Sharon Bowers Having a perfect 4.0 (straight A ' s) average during high school is quite an accomplishment. Sharon not only makes excellent grades, she also involves herself in extra-curricu- lar activities: she is a majorette, a member of the Senior National Honor Society, Future Homemakers of America, and is the Business Manager Senior Editor for the TORCH. Her hobbies include hand crafts like embroidery and reading. She plans to attend DAB and major in medi- cine. Lori McCombs Also maintaining straight A ' s in high school, Lori has accomplished excellence. Each of these students demonstrate those outstanding qualities which make them worthy of this title. Angie was voted on by her class as Who ' s Who β Best Per- sonality; she is the chaplain of the Senior Class as well as being 2nd vice president of the Student Council which gives her the privilege of having daily devotions for the Student Body. She is a member of the Ushers Club, Key Club, and Honor Society. Angie Vann ; 2 84 I Miss and Mr. Mortimer Jordan High Jeff is an extremely talented young man β playing the tuba in the MJ Band. He was voted as Band ' s Best Senior as well as being selected as Who ' s Who β Most Talented. He is president of the Senior Honor Society and of the Band. He maintains membership in the Math Club and Science Club as well as devoting time to helping in the library. Angle is from Castle Heights while Jeff is from the Bradford community. Both these students are in 1204 β Miss Johnson ' s homeroom. Jeff Taylor 85 J Senior Who ' s Who Being chosen by one ' s classmates as a favorite is one of the highest honors that can be given any student. Each year, the Senior Class chooses favorite class members for those qualities which are peculiar to certain people in eleven cate- gories. It is a difficult task to narrow their choices down to only two or three people in order to select just the right ones for each field. Voting is by popular vote β no one person may be chosen for more than one category. Votes are cast in each homeroom, and the winners are to be congratulated. Having the sole responsibility of producing a sum- mary of the school year ' s activities in pictures and words, this staff spends many hours on layouts, pictures, and writ- ing copy. They plan the schedule for taking senior por- traits, as well as regular schoolday pictures. Sponsoring the annual Miss Torch pageant is one of the most exciting events for which the staff makes plans. As the school year progresses, pictures for each type of activity are taken. Then comes the hard work of compiling those pictures into some order and completing a yearbook which will, hopefully, meet the approval of all persons who purchase one. Deadlines are met, and the yearbook is usu- ally delivered the last of April. Sponsor for the yearbook staff is Mrs. Faye Toney. Sharon Bowers is Business Manager. The mem- bership has grown to 29 in this, the second year. Invi- tation to interested students is based upon character, leadership ability and eagerness to serve the school and community. The Key Club is primarily a service organization which is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. Magic City Kiwanis Club sponsors this group. Mr. Bob Clayton of the Magic City Kiwanians was instrumental in organ- izing this club and is still very active in supporting it. Mr. David Brown is the Kiwanian advisor. The Kiwanians and Key Clubbers work close ' y in projects. This Club works at the parking lot at Legion Field and receives a share of the receipts. A bass tournament each fall is supported by the club. The Kiwanians provide one third of the expenses for rep- resentatives to State and International Conventions. David McDonald and Richard Padgett attended Inter- national in San Diego last summer. The main project of this club is sponsoring a boy at Alabama Sheriffs ' Boys Ranch North in Danville. Ricky Chamblee is the 15-year old boy for which MJ Clubbers provide his clothing allowance for the year as well as birthday and Christmas presents. It is espe- cially rewarding and fun to visit Ricky during the year. The club participates in school concerts, community concerts, singing in local churches and at Senior Citizens ' Meetings. Some choir members have the opportunity to compete in Honor Chorus, All-State, District Solos, Ensembles and Choir. MJHS Singers have always received high ratings in district contests. For the past five years, the ratings have been excellent and superior β the highest possible. All interested students are encouraged to join the choir β it doesn ' t require that you have previous training or that you have a wonderful voice β all that is required is a willingness to learn. Talented pianists are also given opportunity to exhibit their knowledge of the piano as they become accompanists for the various choirs. Each year the combined choirs rehearse diligently for a Christmas concert and a Spring concert, which is held at night for the entire school community. Faculty director, Mrs. Maria Wilson, has done an outstand- ing job of leading this group toward appreciating good music. At the end of the field season, the Band concentrates its activities on preparing for a Christmas Concert, Concert Competition, and the annual Spring Concert. MJ is a part of District IV where the competition among schools is keen. Directing the Band is Mr. Allen Bailey who proudly teaches the students in the band as they begin the school year a month early β having band practice all day during the month of August. For a disappointing season in wins, MJ varsity football had several bright spots. Extremely close games, where the final score gave the opponents only a one to three point edge didn ' t put a damper on the spirit and enthusiasm of the team. Injuries plagued the team, but the determination to win and the spirit of the devoted MJ fans help to make up for the losses suffered at the hands of some extremely vibrant teams. The highlight of the season was the win over Fair- view with a score of 7 to 3. With only 10 seniors on the varsity team, MJ looks forward to the ' 81 season with eagerness. We love you team!
