Mortimer Harvey Jordan, Birmingham ' s outstanding hero of the World War. Today he sleeps with other heroes of other wars in Arlington National cemetery, whose green slopes overlook the nation ' s capital, but his memory will live as long as the deeds of the 167th Infantry, Ala- bama ' s Own, are preserved in history. In June, 1916, Dr. Mortimer H. Jordan left his practice in Birmingham to answer President Woodrow Wilson ' s call of June 18 for Mexican border duty. At that time he donned that army khaki which he wore until his death in France two years later. On the border Captain Jordan was in command of Company K, a Birmingham unit of what was then the Fourth Alabama regiment, famous in Civil war history as The Fighting Fourth, and later destined to be known as the 167th Infantry, U. S. A. His regiment arrived at Nogales, Ariz., Oct. 28 and left March 16 of the following year. Before the men could be mustered out, war with Germany came and the regiment was sent to France in November, 1917. It is June 15, 1918 . . . Massed divisions of German shock troops smash away at the American line on the Champagne front under protection of the heaviest artUlery fire in history . . . Blood flows like water, men die like flies. The earth is aquiver from the continual downpour of exploding shells . . . Machine gun buUets are nearly as thick as bees in swarms . . . The Germans are making their last drive of the World War. Out in a shell hole 50 yards from the front line. Private Harvey WiLkerson, of Talladega, Ala., lies mor- tally vyounded. Shell fire is too heavy to ask a man to bring him in from under the rain of death. Captain Mortimer H. Jordan thrusts aside the hands of comrades who would restrain him, dashes to Wilkerson ' s side thru the heavy fire and gathers the dying man in his arms. Like a charmed man — German bullets singing their death song all around him — he returns unhurt with his burden to the American line. A few hours later, Wilkerson dies in a field hospital. It is June 28, 1918 . . . The slopes of Sergy are red with the blood of the 167th Infantry, Alabama ' s Own. . . . Time after time the Uttle town has changed hands after bloody fighting at the point of the bayonet. Divisional headquarters decides to withdraw the sorely-pressed Alabamians from the outskirts of the vil- lage and lay a barrage on German positions before a final charge. Positions then occupied by men of the 167th are included in the area of the bombardment. The men must be withdrawn before it is begun. Captain Jordan refuses to heed the advice of Colonel Screws and bears the message to the front line himself. Three orders are sent with him. Maj. Dallas B. Smith ' s P. C. is reached and as the vital message is being given to him a shell explodes close by. The five men fall, wounded by fragments of the shell. Captain Jordan is th e first man up. He orders Major Smith and the three orderlies taken to the rear where their wounds could be dressed. Scarcely noticing his own hurts, Captain Jordan completes his mission and the men of the 167th are drawn back in time, just as the American artillerymen begin to lay down their barrage. His duty done. Captain Jordan ' s wounds force him to admit his condition to fellow officers and he is borne to the dressing station of Capt. W. W. Long, of Birmingham, one mUe in the rear in the edge of the Foret de Fere. Countless fragments of the shell had entered Captain Jordan ' s back, a hasty examination disclosed, so he was sent to a field hospital at Chateau Montauglaurt. There he died of his wounds on Aug. 2. These incidents are but two of the many of which men of the 167th still teU with pride. Today, in his native state of Alabama and only a few mUes from his former home at 1449 MUner Cres- cent, in Birmingham, stands Captain Jordan ' s monument. It is more than a mere pile of brick and mortar. It is more than a mere shaft of granite. It is inspiration and opportunity for more than 652 boys and girls. It is the Mortimer H.
