Jane is DAR Good Citizen MJ Represented at Yale Mortimer Jordan was again honored last summer to have two students, Kenneth Laney and Byron McCay attend the Yale Summer High School. These boys along with several others, were tested at school and then chosen by the committee at Yale University. Each student took three major courses in composition and mathematics. The third was elective in either literature or social studies. Throughout the courses the relation of freedom to discipline was emphasized. The goal of the curriculum was to permit the student to recog- nize that in the learning process, as in the rest of his life, self-expression, enthusiasm, inspira- tion, style, and theory are inextricably bound to self-direction, diligence, analysis, economy, and vigorous inquiry. Each year the Alabama Society of Daughters of the Ameri- can Revolution sponsors a pilgrimage to Montgomery. One student from each participating school in Alabama parti- cipates in the tour of the historical sights around our capital. Jane Sparks, this year ' s DAR representative, was honored at a tea and luncheon by the John Parks Curtis Chapter, which sponsored her in state competition for a scholarship. 13

1 1th Grade Good Citizen ft m wAVA In March of 1966, Patsy Beach repre- sented Jordan in the annual Citizenship Tour sponsored by The Birmingham News and different organizations in and around Birmingham. She was one of twenty-eight students who embarked to see the historical sights of New York, Williamsburg, James- town, Philadelphia, Washington, and other cities. The tour provokes the interest of the students - - from the campus at Washington and Lee University to the luncheon with Alabama ' s senators and rep- resentatives. To Patsy, Williamsburg and the F.B.I. Building were the highlights of the trip. The most influential man she met was Mr. J. Edgar Hoover. Boys ' and Girls 9 State 14 Paul Walker was chosen as Jordan ' s representative to Boys ' State. Around 550 boys are given the opportunity to run for office. The boys elected served in their respective governmental offices. Paul received one of the eight physical fitness awards given. As there were around 550 boys par- ticipating, the award was a great honor. During the summer of 1966, 326 girls convened at Hun- tington College for a week at Girls ' State. Among them was our representative, Jane Sparks. Girls ' State is sponsored by the Alabama American Le- gion Auxiliary. The students learn about our state and na- tional governments. To help the girls understand the func- tions of government, they campaign and run for offices in the state government. Jane was elected as Secretary of State.
