After scholastic ability and person- al traits were considered, Pat was cho- sen as one of the fifteen semi-finalists of Jefferson County. She was honored at a luncheon. Jane is DAR Good Citizen MJ Represented at Yale Mortimer Jordan was again honored last summer to have two students, Kenneth Laney and Byron McCay attend the Yale Summer High School. These boys along with several others, were tested at school and then chosen by the committee at Yale University. Each student took three major courses in composition and mathematics. The third was elective in either literature or social studies. Throughout the courses the relation of freedom to discipline was emphasized. The goal of the curriculum was to permit the student to recog- nize that in the learning process, as in the rest of his life, self-expression, enthusiasm, inspira- tion, style, and theory are inextricably bound to self-direction, diligence, analysis, economy, and vigorous inquiry. Each year the Alabama Society of Daughters of the Ameri- can Revolution sponsors a pilgrimage to Montgomery. One student from each participating school in Alabama parti- cipates in the tour of the historical sights around our capital. Jane Sparks, this year ' s DAR representative, was honored at a tea and luncheon by the John Parks Curtis Chapter, which sponsored her in state competition for a scholarship. 13
