WILLIAM S'. CARLSON, AB., M.S., Ph. D., L.L.D. Preridenz, State University of New York Fewer than ten years ago - but even so, long before the members' of the Class of 1958 had thought of the State University Institute at Morris- ville - a small group of men had the faith, courage, and vision to establish the State University of New York. This class already has received high dividends from the foresighted and forthright action of those men, for this State University Institute and all its students have benefited from the establishment of the University. The founders, in their turn, have profited by seeing educational opportunities more widely extended to deserving young people who are so well represented by this class. You have demonstrated in no small measure the qualities of faith, of courage, and of vision. You have had the vision to map out rewarding careers and to realize that solid preparation, such as that obtainable at this Institute, would be necessary to achieve your goals. You have had the courage to persist in this effort over the past two years, despite temporary discouragements. You have shown the faith in yourselves and in your instructors which PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE warrants this investment of their time and yours. I share their confidence that this investment will benefit not only you but all the people of our State through your increased readiness for meaningful citizenship. In return for its faith in you, the State Uni- versity of New York can ask only an intangible: a continuation of your own faith in the University and an even enlarged vision of what that University can be. As the end of the State University's first decade approaches, I am sure that we have just begun to realize the potential of service to all the people which this Institute and its sister colleges offer. A very major challenge to our faith, our vision, and particularly to our courage lies in the future of this State University. Our achieving its maximum potential of service will be speeded by the understanding, enthusiastic aid of our former students. My hearty congratulations to the Class of 1958 bespeak iny confidence in your successful and re- warding lives for which the State University Institute at Morrisville has done its part to prepare you.
