X BLAST OFF!!! “OUT OF THIS WORLD” In keeping with the modem trend which places great emphasis on rockets, man-made satellites, shots at the moon and intercontinental missiles, our staff has selected “Out of This World” for the theme of this, the twenty- first ROBERT MORRIS. In doing so we hope, not only to tell the complete story of our senior year, but also to tie this stoiy in with life in the world as we see it. With this yearbook we reach some sort of a milestone. Not only will it be the twenty-first published by the graduating classes of Morrisville High School but also it will be the last to make its appearance from this particular school. Next year the staff will do its work in the beautiful new high school pictured on other pages of this book. Twenty-one years have seen vast changes in our yearbook, our school and its curriculum and in our way of life. We hope that in our edition we can do our share to bring the story up-to-date. As in past years we, too, will publish a summer supplement which will be distributed following the close of school in June. This then is our yearbook, the 1959 ROBERT MORRIS. THE STAFF RICHARD G. LEE Mr. Lee, a graduate of Trenton High School in the Class of 1947, came to Morrisville in 1952 as a teacher in the fifth grade of the Case School. The following year he joined the high school faculty and has been an outstanding teacher and coach. A fine athlete, both at Trenton and at Albright Col- lege, he has served us as assistant football coach and head basketball and baseball coach. During our junior and senior years he has been our class advisor and has always been ready to lend a help- ing hand, no matter what the problem or emergency. We’ll always remember him for his flashy sport shirts, his ability to make himself heard and his familiar “When the bell rings, you’re late.” We are happy and proud to dedicate this 1959 ROBERT MORRIS in his honor. The Class of 1959 SUMMERSEAT Erected in 1773 by Thomas Barclay. Purchased in 1791 by Robert Morris, signer of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution and a United States senator from Pennsylvania. Purchased from Morris by George Clymer, also a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Headquarters for General George Washington, De- cember 8 to 14, 1776, prior to the Battle of Trenton. Now used for superintendent’s office, medical rooms, cafeteria, and home economics suite. Manor Park School Capitol View School THE MQRRISVILLE Grandview School William E. Case School Morrisville High School Robert Morris Athletic Field SCHOOL DISTRICT Summerseat TWO NEW SCHOOLS MORRISVILLE HIGH SCHOOL As the picture shown above indicates, many years of planning and dreaming are about to bear fruit in the construction of a modern high school for Morrisville. As this yearbook goes to press the building has begun to take exciting form and while we, the Class of 1959, will never have the opportunity to study in its classrooms we can be thankful that those who follow us will have that privilege. The school with all its modern facilities for learning will open for the first time in September of 1959. Located at the corner of Cox Avenue and Palmer Street it will have such features as an auditorium, gymnasium, outdoor theatre, science rooms, music rooms, cafeteria and all the other advancements of modern education. The new high school will also mean a great deal to the younger children of Morris- ville for the old high school will be remodeled into an elementary school so that the Case school can be abandoned. BUCKS COUNTY TECHNICAL SCHOOL For the past two years the office of the proposed Technical high school has been in our own Summerseat and the school itself seemed to most of us just a dream. Now that dream is about to come true and as of this September many of us will have the opportunity to learn a valuable trade. The school is located in Bristol Township and seven school districts have cooperated in its construction. They include Bensalem Township, Bristol Township, Falls Township, Lower Makefield Township, Tullytown Borough, Yardley Borough and Morrisville. Under the program of the new school a certain number of our students from grades ten, eleven and twelve are permitted to attend the school for technical training. They are divided into two groups and attend the school during alternate weeks. While one group is at the school the other is attending Morrisville High School. It is interesting to note that in order to transport its students to the Technical School, Morrisville has purchased its first school bus. 13 DR. PAUL PHILLIPS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Dr. Phillips, newly appointed assistant to Mr. Reiter, came to Morrisville this year from the Lower Merion Township School District where he was the principal of the Cynwyd Elementary School. In 1942 he graduated from the West Chester State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in health and physical education and minoring in biological science. He received his Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees from Temple University. His teaching experience has been extensive. He taught at Lansdale High School, John Bartram High School in Philadelphia and in Chestnutwold School in Haverford Township. He was the teaching principal of the Preston Elementary School in Haverford Township and was principal of the Oakmont Elementary School in Haverford Township. In addition he has taught at Temple and Lehigh Universities. During World War II Dr. Phillips was company commander of an am- phibian tractor battalion of the Marine Corps in the South Pacific. He earned two Presidential unit citations, one for the Peleliu campaign and one for the Okinawa campaign. We of the student body of Morrisville High School are happy to welcome Dr. Phillips to our school system and wish him a great deal of success in his new position. THEIR TASK — TO GUIDE US. This has been their task; and to see that it was done, all three have made it their life’s work. Mr. Reiter came to Morrisville in 1927 as a teacher and high school principal. In 1929 he became supervising principal and then in 1940 was appointed superintendent of schools. Mr. Caum joined the faculty in 1928 and was appointed principal in 1932. Mr. Wood, a graduate of Morrisville High School in the Class of 1935, joined the faculty in 1939 and was appointed to his present position in 1955. To all of these men goes our gratitude for what they have done for us and meant to us. 16 17 Clockwise around the table, starting at the left: Frank C. Miller, Donald G. Frye, William B. Under their direct leadership and responsibility Morrisville’s school system has grown, ex- panded and kept abreast of current trends in modern education. Theirs is a thankless, payless position and we would take this opportunity to express our gratitude for all their efforts in our behalf. This was a memorable game for it marked the con- clusion of Morrisville’s first undefeated season. DAVE DALE LEIGH BOB FRAN We have designated this page for a salute to the seniors on the 1958 champion- ship squad. These are the young men pictured above. They have brought great honor to our school and they will be sorely missed. The center picture has been included for two reasons. In the first place it is an action shot of our game with Neshaminy High School, a game which ended in a tie, thus making the two schools co-champions for the year 1958. The second reason for its use is that it is the best picture we could fine to show- the bruising running and vicious tackling that characterized the week-in and week-out play of this year’s team. This squad will surely go down as one of the great teams in our history. MIKE JIM DAN BRUCE 59 V ARSIT i' Kneeling, left to right: D. Napoleon, Mr. Lee. Standing, left to right: R. Lenox, F. CROSS COUNTRY Under the capable coaching and the inspiration of Mr. Thomas, Morrisville High School was able to enter a cross country team in Lower Bucks County League competition in the fall of 1958 for the first time in the school’s history. A great deal of credit must go to the boys of the squad who were so anxious to take part that they began their training during the summer months. In four meets the team was able to beat Pennsbury but lost to Bristol, Neshaminy and Delhaas. It is hoped that the experience they obtained will help them during the spring track schedule and in their bid for the cross country championship next year. We would aim special praise at Louis Nay, Robert Dreher and Dennis Nagy who were consistant winners throughout the first season. 62 BASKETBALL First row, left to right: M. Podoris, R. Marshall, J. OUR BAND We are using these and the pages that follow to pay special tribute to our marching band and the organization which does so much to make this band possible—the Band Boosters Association. We can always be certain that, regardless of the place, time or weather, we will get a good show from Mr. Hutchinson and our schoolmates in the band. Their intricate formations have long been an important part of every Morrisville football game. It also seems important to us that we take this opportunity to thank the parents and friends who make up the Band Boosters for the long hours they give that our band can look and sound as it does. As a tribute we have pictured Mr. Hutchison as he directs the band; the majorettes, the color guard, special informals, a game formation and, on the next two pages, a full picture.
