The Catholic and three of the public schools are for elementary grades. The latter include the Manor Park, the Case and the Capitol View Schools. The fourth public school is the Morris ville High School shown above. The first school in Morrisville was constructed on the land now occupied by the Tattersall Coal Company. It was built on land deeded by John Wood to Adam Hoops in 1764. In 1857 a two room brick school was built on Chambers Street and in 1876 a grammar school was erected on the adjoining lot. In 1892 this school became Morris- villeis first high school. The rapid growth of Morrisvilleis population makes an expansion of the present school system inevitable. Plans are now under consideration to enlarge the Manor Park School, to build an elementary school in the Washington Heights section of town, and to complete the high school. There are baseball leagues, basketball leagues and football leagues. A teen-age canteen, an Easter egg hunt, and a summer playground are all important parts of our everyday life. For many years the Island Park has been the center of the community's recrea- tional activities. In past years it reached its heights when some of the outstanding professional players and teams in the country played on its fields. Today, as its potentialities are at last being recognized, it has a fine picnic area, two beautiful ball fields and a model airplane field. In 1939 the Robert Morris Athletic Field was built for the Morrisville School system and since that time many area and all high school sporting events have been held there. This past summer a set of outdoor lights was installed at the field to permit participation in night activities. The most pressing need for the immediate future is a swimming pool which will offer the people of Morrisville a hygienic and safe place in which to swim. At present a move has begun to build such a pool on the Island. .-A ff Ni' 4 First row, left to right: P. Chapman, A. Powell, F. Pesce, L. Hart, D. Deitrick, P. Keenan, J. Haston, J. Fellnor, D. Men like Robert Morris, the financier of the Revolution, and George Clymer, both of whom signed the Declara- tion of Independence and the Constitution, made their homes here. William Penn selected the area for his great colonial home. And George Washington made his headquarters here prior to the battle of Trenton. In 1687 the river flooded the area and when it subsided it was found that a creek had broken through and isolated a part of Morrisville which came to be known as the Island. This creek provided an excellent source of water power and many new industries grew near the creek. Our closest call to real fame came when Robert Morris sought to make this the capital of the new United States. The result hung in the balance for many months until Alexander Hamilton threw his influence to a more southerly capital and Morris- ville lost in its bid by a mere two votes. Morrisville has found itself on all maps in recent years because of its proximity to the United States Steel Corporation's new Fairless Mill.
