Lewis Lewis Litz Long Long All of my teachers through high school have taught me the impor- tance of pride and self gratification. Also, they taught me to set goals twice as far as I could reach. If society were different we might be content just to do somethin well. But no one should be pleases to simply do what he does. What is important for us to reach is that which does not exist. Thus, success is found in the median. - Shan- non Collins 47 Nuunauununnu- 'Kill' f s-ms My seniortyear has been one of the most enjo able years of my li e. The 1985 Hurricane Team started on the right foot when they ventured to Florida to compete in the tourna- ment there. When they returned, they had won 8 of 11 games. This foreshadow- ed their excellent season of 28-9. They also earned the Conference Title for the third time in 5 years, and later came in second in the District. These feats were achieved with the aid of two record breaking players, Hank Smith and Ken Eden- field. J' fx 5- 1 I . -. is FCOTBHLL From the beginning of this year, Coach Carlis Altizer led off a small and struggl- ing team to a 3-7 season. Although these 'Canes gave the best they had, they seemed often to come up on the short end of the score. ln the early part of the season, the Varsity Football squad lost many close matches to such teams as Greenville, Knox Carter, and Cocke County. Later, though, the 'Canes luck turn- ed really sour when they had a very large deficit at the end of the game against nationally ranked jefferson County, however, these losses were broken by a win on the road over Crockett. Then, the old adage, When it rains, it pours was proven as the Hurricanes lost in the next game at Homecoming to McMinn County. These losses were overshadowed, though, by the sweet silver lining to this black cloud. In the last game of the season, the 'Canes proved their deter- mination and their ability to overcome the hard times of the past. Coming off a win over South Greene, the Football team proved to our cross-town rival that they meant business. ln the most exciting and best-played game of the year, the 'Canes won the City Championship 21-19. FRESHfTlHN FOOTBHLL This year, despite a lack of players and a few injuries, the Freshman Football squad ended its season with a record of 5-3. However, this statistic does not accurately sum up the effort of this team. After a slow start, the 'Canes made a spectacular come- back, that climaxed with an 8-0 shutout against jefferson County that was witnessed by the student body. As a result of showings like this, it is obvious we shall be hearing names like Hodges, Altizer, Wilder and Bault in the future. Don't run over your own man Mark! VOLLEYBHLL The Volleyball team got off to a slow start this year, placing poorly in their lam- boree at East High during early September. Thus, their season record of 5-5 was better than expected. After the lamboree, the Lady Canes played well, but they continued to lose by narrow margins to such squads as Greeneville, Cherokee, and Crockett. Later in the season, however, Coach Walker helped her team to reverse this trend, as the Volleyball team won 4 out of 5 games, beating jefferson, West, and Cherokee during this string of victories. The honorary title of All District Tournament Player was earned by Michelle Yount, Alisa Sanders, and LaDonna Murrah during post season play when these girls led the Lady Canes to a third place finish in the District. At the beginning of the season, Coach Houban's team included 30 members. However, by early january, this number had decreased until there were 12 boys on the team, and only 4 of these had wrestled previously for East. Troy Kelley and Shane Simpson, the two Senior Cap- tains, comprised half of this small number. As a result of their leader- ship abilities andthe strong will of the other 10 members, the Cane legacy continued. East finished the season with a record of 19-3. What's the matter, jimmy? Led by Seniors Larry Harrell, who scored a team high of 263 points, and Brian Dean, who brought down 148 rebounds for East, the 'Canes earned a season record of 15- 10. As a result of this record, the Basketball team was ranked fourth in the IMAC at the end of the year. This placing came after East gained a Conference record of 6-6, which featured victories over Cherokee, David Crockett, and jefferson County. BOY'S B-TEHITI BHSKETBHLL Early in this season, the Boy's B-team, lead by Scotty Carpenter and john Brady, began their year well by opening with a 7-1 record. Coach Canter certain- ly trained them well offensively, but their talented defense was the key to win- ning in many games. This outstanding defense gave up an average of only 33 points per match. Later in the season, however, these Hurricanes seemed to not be able to pull their game together. After the Christmas Holidays, their almost flawless record slowly fell to a frustrating 11-10. Since this disappointing record clearly does not show the effort put forth by the B-team, it is obvious that these boys will certainly provide a great deal of talent and determination to future Var- sity squads. johnny Carmicheal, Andy jeffers, john Brady, Tommy Davis, Kevin Stricland, john Holbert, john Surber, Scoval Scruggs, Scotty Carpenter, and Spencer Lewis. l F7 l ,limi Left: ls this your cat's cradle defense, West? 101 BOY'S FRESHITIHN BHSKETBHLL This year, the Boy's Freshman Basketball team came within one game of hav- ing a perfect year. They were abstained from this by Sullivan South, who won the game only after it went into overtime. According to Coach Cranford, this is one of the best team he has had in several years. lt is then easy to understand why this team, which was known for its good defense, was decorated with many honors. In many games, the Girl's team lost by close margins after holding the lead earlier in the game. Examples of such two-point deficits in- clude matches against lefferson County, West, and Greeneville, of whom Coach Hux said, We let them off the hook. However, the Hurricanettes did finish the season at .500 with a 13-13 record. During this second year, the B-Team girls earned a season record of 9-7. Although they began slowly, the Hurricanettes stormed back after Christmas, winning their next four games. ln this winning streak, Sullivan South and West Greene were defeated, and Cherokee fell twice during the Cane surge. The credit for these wins did not rest solely on the shoulders of any one player. Instead, the talent was shared, as was the credit for achieving their second place finish in the Conference. With their ability to come on strong during a crunch, these Lady Canes should certainly be a great help in filling next year's openings on the Varsity Team. This launch was historical because Sharon Christa McAuliffe, age 37, was to be the first teacherfcivilian in space. However, the launch became historical not because of triumph, but because of the most devastating tragedy in American history. At 11:48 a.m., the shuttle, only seventy-five seconds into its flight, exploded. What we had feared would happen in the 25 years of the American space program, finally happened. The American public expressed its sympathy and its anguish at the deaths of Francis R. Scobee, commander, Michael Smith, pilot, Ronald McNair, Gregory Jarvis, Judith Resnick, Ellison Onizuka, and Christa McAuliffe. Students at Mor- ristown East were also greatly affected bythe tragedy. lt was a shock, said Scott Vaughn, sophomore, while Lanette King, senior, said lt was like something out of science fiction. Even though I saw it, l couldn't believe it. But, just as we suf- fered, we regained hope. It was a shock, but l think we should continue the space program, said jimmy Brooks, junior. We mourn seven heroes. We will continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and more civilians in space, because, as President Reagan said, The future doesn't belong to the fainthearted. It belongs to the brave. 136 'flJp,. up, the long delirious .s ..bLmng blue, l've toppedithe A it if withiseasy grace.
