ml PAUL ADDISON EDWARDS In Appreciation by Mrs. Alberta Cain Teacher, dean, educator, advisor to seven presidents, christian, husband, father, friend are but a few of the words that would describe Paul Addison Edwards. He was born in Alabama, the fourth son of Rev. and Mrs. Edward E. Edwards. His college years were spent at Knoxville College, Fisk University, and Indiana University. Before coming to Morristown he taught at Butler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, and in public schools in Florida, where he led the battle for equalization of teacher's salaries for blacks, and worked with U.S.O., T.V.A., and United Seamen Services. If you had asked Paul Edwards where home was, he would have readily said Morristown, in the heart of East Tennessee, where he had met and married his college sweetheart, Jamesena McMahon Edwards. If you had asked him what line of work had brought him the most satisfaction he would have quickly said, being employed at Morristown College. He ioined the faculty here twenty-eight years ago as a teacher of biology but soon after became dean of instruction, a position he held for over twenty years. He came out of retirement in 1972 to serve as assistant to President White but failing health caused him to limit his activities. However, even in failing health, he attended Chapel services and sports events regularly. There were many sides to Dean Edwards, a title that will always remain. He was a loyal, dedicated member of Bethel United Methodist Church. An active civic leader who was intensely interested in the city school sys- tem, United Way, and activities of city council. He ran for a seat on city council but although defeated, he could spend hours discussing ideas that would make Morristown a better community. As a teacher and dean, Mr. Edwards was helpful in the classroom, co-sponsor of the science club, assisted students in transferring to a four-year college, helped them when they were in a financial bind, and visited in their homes when he had a opportunity. Mr. Edwards in his quiet way was an inspiration to students and faculty and was never heard to argue or complain. He lived by the Golden Rule and would go that extra mile for friend, family, or co-worker. lt was a privilege to have known him and our lives have been blessed because of it. Some men build bridges, some have stone monuments erected in their honor, others live in the hearts of those who have known a true friend.
