To lead this group successfully, the following officers were chosen: Jerry Kincaid, president, John Hoyle, vice-president, George West, sec- retary, Gwendolyn Lewis, assistant secretary, James Coleman, treasurer, Bobby Oates, business manager, and Gilbert McKissick, sergeant-at- arms. The faculty sponsors were Mrs. Clara Osborne and Miss Jessie Matthews. Among the students who made the Dean's list during the first semester were Ronald Cook, Charles Wiggins, Jennie Twitty, Rosie Williams, and Mary Towles. l The charming young ladies who were chosen as attendants to Miss Morristown were Pauline Wheeler, Barbara Wellons, Jean Brookins, Bertha Thaxton, and Charlesline Hilton. - By popular vote Thelma Charles was chosen Miss Freshman, and Jean Brookins were chosen Miss Vogue. Many of our young ladies were chosen as queens of various states: Nancy Hoosier, District of ,Colum- bia, Barbara Lyons, Mississippi, Arlene Goode, New York, Shirley Thompson, Pennsylvania, Gwendolyn Lewis, South Carolina, Margie McNeal, West Virginia, and Brenda Brent, Wisconsin. To highlight our social activity, Ledora Brewer was chosen as campus sweetheart. The effectiveness of the various clubs and organizations was due to the contributions made by the Freshmen class. The basketball team was composed of 98? freshmen, who were, Jimmie Fields, Ronald Cook, Frank Sligh, Bobby Oates, Louie Turner, Buford Howell, Donald Carmack, Curtis Bradley, and Donald Williams, trainer. To cheer our team were Delcena McNeal, Jean Brown, Margie McNeal, and Rosa Williams. Out of 38 members of our college choir, thirty were freshmen, with Herbert Greaves as tenor soloist and president, and Barbara Lyons as soprano soloist. Margaret Oates was chosen queen of the choir. The French Club, Science and Mathematics Club, Thespian Club, Social Science Club, Religious Education Fellowship, Noblemen Club, Commercial Club, Phi Beta Mu Society and the Delta Psi Omega Fraternity, allbenefited by the Freshmen class. ' At the beginning of the second semester, fifteen students joined our Freshmen class. They were: Robert Adams, Robert Baxter, Georgia Greene, Sylvester Thomas, Ruth Williams, Evelyn Beavers, Diane Clark, Shirley Thompson, Mary Jones, Edward Gaston, Yvonne Smith, Hazel Smith, Barbara Smith, Marian Williams, and Paul Wilson. Outstanding awards were presented to various students: Catherine Davis, Rubye Hunt, and Charles Wiggins, Mathematics awards, Gwen- dolyn Lewis, Annie Goodwin, Good Housekeeping awards, Sinda Smith, William Plate Prize, Charlesline Hilton, The Tyler Prize, Anne Gidney, best actress, Fred Spruell, best actor, and Donald Carmack, best sup- porting actor. With much enthusiasm, 907: of our original class returned to com- plete an anticipated second year of success. The class, having reached sophomore status, elected the following officers: Jerry Kincaid, presi- dent, William Richardson, vice-president, Gwendolyn Lewis, secretary, Rubye Hunt, assistant secretary, James Coleman, treasurer, Bobby Oates, business manager, and Paul Sudderth, sergeant-at-arms. Faculty advisors chosen were Mrs. Mildred Brown and James Adams.
