NANCY HOWELL Advisor Capito Association of Nursing The members of CANS represent the nursing students of Morris Harvey College. Their func¬ tions include the provision of workshops in various areas of nursi ng, community awareness of the role of nurses today, and the furthering of their own ecucations through group discussions and skills work shops. They also provide social events for their own enjoyment to further inter¬ personal relationships among the members and to provide an opportunity to discuss current issues and deal with their own feelings relating to nursing today. Its purpose is to increase one’s knowledge of foreign cultures and to deepen one’s appreci¬ ation of cultures other than one’s own. Students will watch and or participate in various cultur al activities at the meetings as well as be given an opportunity to interact with people from other countries. Enrollment in a foreign language class is not required for membership in the club. Officers for ’77-’78 are Sheila Duncan, president; Benny Mills, vice-president; and Debbie Land, secretary-treasurer. Club sponsor is Stephanie Wynne, French professor. With the success of that drama, the Players are eager to tackle a comedy in the spring as well as developing further their costume and prop department. We play for such school functions as the Annual Christmas Program, the Alumnae Banquet, the President’s Reception and participate in the Commencement Orchestra. We hope to expand our program so that we can have an orchestra at Morris Harvey College which will also include woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments in addition to violins, vio¬ las, cello and basses. MHC Radio Station The radio station tries to bring together those interested in amateur, commercial, or educational radio, and to help those preparing for a radio license examination. WMHC Broadcasting Station is a low-powered campus station providing a new communications medium for the students. Operated by the students, this station brings the latest music, campus news and sports to everyone. 84 Black Student Advisory Council The Black Student Advisory Council’s goal is to achieve a better environment for minority stu¬ dents and bring harmony and order to all nationalities. Within this goal, entails the ability to bet¬ ter the academic status of each student on the council to prepare us for our future lives. It is also affiliated with the National Education Association. The Morris Harvey Chapter of S.N.E.A. is open to all education majors. Projects for the organization include redeco¬ ration of a M.H. classroom for educational programs, co-sponsors special programs for Kana¬ wha County students and meetings relevant to the educational needs of prospective teachers. The organization also directs and co-sponsors a swim program for trainable mentally retarded students. Students participate in numerous speaking events including debate, discussion, extemporaneous speaking, informative speaking, impromptu speaking, oratory, prose and poetry interpretation. Participation in these events enables students to qualify for membership in Pi Kappa Delta Forensics Honorary. The coach and advisor of the Debate Team since 1964 has been Ms. Roselyn Freedman. The SGA is the basis for all phases of student life. Through SGA the students can and do have input and influence on all college policies. Also through the SGA students provide campus leadership, officially represent the college at the request of the Administration, appoint other students representatives to college committees, recommend students for awards, sponsor school projects of a civic, social, intellectual and spiritual nature, act as a sounding board for student opinion and represent Morris Harvey at functions sponsored by or with other colleges and the community. The goal of the group is to provide a wide range of experimental and intellectual opportunities in the Behavioral Science and Mental Health fields for all its members. The Psychology Club is open to all interested students. Since then, the honorary dramatic fraternity has flourished and this year four new members were inducted into the organization. Members receive a magazine under the same name which is published annually and presents a pictorial record of what other colleges and universities are doing. Eligibility is based on students having acted or contributed in two major productions or four minor productions, student directed or written plays. The Epsilon Chapter was installed in Morris Harvey College in the Spring of 1923 and it has been active since its installation. The Fraternity issues two publica¬ tions. The Chi Beta Phi Record is published annually and the Chi Beta Phi Newsletter is pub¬ lished when needed. The chapter awards annually a scholarship of $100.00 to an outstanding student of the college and also a science medal to that student who is graduated with the highest honors attained in the areas of natural sciences and psychology at the immediately preceding summer of commencement and during the current academic year. The national organization awards annually the Chi Beta Phi Scholarship Key to the outstand¬ ing student member for the year. Mr. C. T. The purpose of the society is to encourage high professional, intellectual, and personal standards among its members. To qualify for membership students must have completed 64 hours with a 3.00 average and intend to pursue teaching as a profession. Since that time the chapter has grown with new members being added each year. The Chapter co-sponsors the annual debate tournament on campus each year in November and has hosted the Province of the Lakes each decade since 1 958. The faculty advisor since 1 964 has been Ms. Roselyn L. Freedman who has held numerous offices in the National organization and is currently a member of the National Council. It is an organization which binds the sororities on campus together, providing a means for them to contribute to the campus and community as a unit. The new policy of Freshman fall rush was passed and carried out successfully on campus this year. The Panhellenic Association also was instrumental in the establishment of the Greek Council and the re-establishment of the Morris Harvey Greek Week. 107 Interfraternity Council MEMBERS: John Robertson — Advisor, Jeff Weinberg, Dave Kurtz, Kevin Naylor. The main function of the Interfraternity Council is to govern fall and spring rush. By fostering a spirit of mutual helpfulness among the Greek organizations and promoting friendly relations, leadership, scholarship, and loyalty, the Council hopes to acquaint men with the advantages of fraternal relationships. 108 Alpha Sigma Phi 109 Alpha Omicron Pi The Phi Kappa chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on the Morris Harvey Campus in 1961. The principles that AOTT stands on can be found in each sister, a good example of this is the sisters participation in many campus activities. AOTT is the only International sorority on campus, there are bi-annual conventions that are international and regional. These conventions are held in various places in the United States and Canada. Each sister of Alpha Omicron Pi is like a single flame among the many in a chandelier that is united under one common bond of true sisterhood and love. “AOTT is forever,” and will be in our hearts for now and in the years to come. Some of these activities include helping out during rush, participating in Fund Raising projects and assisting Pledges in Brotherhood development. They promote spirit and rapport between the Brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon and in turn, each Golden Heart finds a true friendship in being part of the Brotherhood. 118 Delta Zeta Delta Zeta was founded at Miami University in 1902 and came to Morris Harvey in 1962 combining two local sororities. The largest national sorority, our aim is to unite our sisters in bonds of lasting love and to develop outstanding characteristics both morally and socially. We are involved in the community along with our alumnae chapter and on campus, being members of the Student Government, choir, MHC Players, dorm council. Alpha Lamda Delta, Pi Gamma Mu, SNEA, Newman Club, Kappa Delta Pi, Chi Beta Phi, art guild, admissions team. Honors Program, Harveyan and Comet. We compete in intramurals consistently and won the softball intramural championship in the Spring of 1977. On November 5, 1977 all the Delta Zeta chapters in West Virginia gathered at Marshall University for the annual State Day. At this event our chapter walked away with many awards, among them are: most outstanding chapter, pledge program. Delta Zeta Loving Cup, treasurer’s award, alum award, Joan Richards award, the Spirit of Delta Zeta award, and many of our sisters were recognized for their high scholastic averages. At the Morris Harvey annual honors convocation Delta Zeta won the Deans Scholarship Trophy. A male who is nominated as a Golden Lamp is one who has exhibited in a brotherly fashion the love the sisters of Delta Zeta have for one another. This group of men are noted for their outstanding qualities in such areas as fund-raising, philanthropies, and social events. They also help new pledges in becoming acquainted with sorority life by being a big brother to them. Reorganized in 1973, Tau Kappa Epsilon has grown from a few members to a membership of 43 strong. TKE is the only fraternity on campus that sponsors a formal dance for the students of Morris Harvey. Every March the TKE Playboy dance is held and the TKE Playmate is chosen from candidates sponsored by various campus organizations. Pictures of these candidates are sent to Playboy International, who then chooses the winner. The Order of Diana, the TKE Little Sisters, are also active at Morris Harvey. Each spring they sponsor the Mr. Mo Harv contest. Both TKE’s and Little Sisters are involved in student government, varsity and intramural athletics, choir, yearbook and newspaper staff, as well as being chosen for school and national awards.
