Somouauk Senior Boys' Gym Class A special law which was passed in lllinois this year, requiring all boys from seventeen and above to take at least five hours of physical training, was given prompt attention by Coach Wallis. Having been in the Armed Forces, tloach NVallis knew the value of physical training in preparing a boy for his part in the United States Army, and before the week was out he had us turning and twisting in the vari- ous exercises guaranteed to build us up. After we had begun to limber up, we worked at tumbling. rope-climbing, and other specialties, and gave a demonstration at several different times. Besides the ealisthenies, we played basketball. touch foot- ball, and other games. NVe wish to thank Coach lVallis for helping us to build good healthy bodies to take the knocks which we will receive during our service in the Armed Forces. Track With approximately twenty-tive boys working out daily, the coaches hope to develop a well bal- anced team before the Corn Belt l'onferenee Meet at Normal. ln track Morris has three lettermen from the team last year. In Eddie Leach, Morris has a line distance runner in the 880 and 440 yard runs, with 'Waters for the 100 ffllld 220 yard dashes. Coach M'allis also believes that George Tabler will develop into a good miler. 'l'o date, meets have been sched- uled with Pontiac-, Mooseheart. and Ottawa along with the ilonfereiiee 'l'ilt. 'A Where can I find a copy of the Tha.nat0psis? SIll'il is the type of question that a librarian might be asked by any of the students who happen to be at a loss to find material in the library. The librarian is always on hand to offer her services and very seldom has to call on the study hall teacher for any assistance in carrying out her duties in an orderly fashion. Each librarian is called upon to devote one study hall a week to take care of the library and finds it very helpful to herself as well as benefieial to tl1e students. This year the library has acquired a great many new fiction books. which are, of course. of interest to the pupils who lind time to read ill their spare time. Mary more books expect to be added in the near future. A reeord dance was given this year for the purchasing of more of these books. lt can be said that a satisfactory sum was acquired along with furnish- ing those who attended an enjoyable evening of dancing. The officers this year were: Dorthie Bright, president: Marion Adams. vice-president: Charlene Panish. seeretaryg Shirley Grove, treasurer. These girls along with Miss Connors and Mr. Starke as sponsors have accomplished a great deal for the organization. 'lr SWING ORCHESTRA This year the music department had a new feature. This was the Swing Orehestra, started for the purpose of the Bond Show. A combination of the HAH Girl Orchestra and the Swing Shifters , of last year made up this group. They specialized in the latest swing-mueli to everyone 's enjoyment. 94 JUNIOR PLAYS This year the Junior Class presented two Knot just one. hut twol very romantic plays. The first play was Love ls Like That. 'l'his play is ahout a rich girl who falls madly in .love with a poor poet. She wishes to marry him, but her mother has chosen for hor a rich businessman. Her grandmother he- lieves she should marry the one she loves regardless of wealth. Since there udare two against one, Daphne eloped with the poet and lived happily there- after. Have a ehaw of tabaccy! The other play was a hill-hilly play called Sparkin' which took us to the kitchen of the Hanna farm, typical of the hill-billy homes in the hills of Tennessee or Kentucky. Orry kept the audience laughing hilariously when he went Sparkin'. Lessie was shy at first, hut Granny succeeded in making things come out right, and as most stories end happily, Amen. al' ALL-SCHOOL PLAY lVhat's my cue? XYhere's my tie V? Does my hair look all right? These were some of the questions heard back-stage on the night of May -L, when the All-School Play was presented. The name of the play was Johnny on the Spotf' Johnny was a sailor fa supposed herol who got home on leave only to be flattered and hailed for a heroic deed he knew nothing ahout. He was also supposed to have inspired a. song written hy Sherry liee's hrother. Sherry was a radio singer and also Johr,ny's heart heat.D When it was revealed that Johnny hadnlt manned a gun and that he had been a cook on the ship, his grandmother said that her Johnny was a hero anywayg that all of the hoys in the service were heroes because they were American boys, fighting for Ameri- can rights. All ends Well as Nadine picks Melinda 's hat for the Hat-ot'-the- Month, Johnny gets the girl and turns out to he a hero after all. CURTAIN l 95 96 G.A.A. MEMBERS G. A. A. Wollan The Pep l'lub is an organized group of girls who are interested in installing pep and enthusiasm into our athletie teams and in keeping up the morale and good spirit of the school. Any girl in High Sehool may be a mem- ber by paying her semester dues and taking part in aetivities when ealled upon to do so. This year the Pep t'lub has H7 members. Before football and basketball games the Pep Club held pep assemblies during which skits were presented Qthe ltedskins always being the vietorsll. new yells were praetieed. and pep talks were give11. 'llhe eheer-leaders--Iune Allan, Louise Trenter and Mary .lane May-eworking with the Pep t'lub de- serve mueh praise for tl1e line way in whieh they roused cheers from the stu- dent, body and urged the teams o11 to vietory. The Pep t'lub is eonsidering getting eostumes for the cheerleaders next year. At the games themselves the girls sold the everweleome hot dogs, pop Zlllll 1-andy bars. One elaborate football program was made for the Ilomeeom- ing Game, with players' and eoaehes' signatures, football seenes and line-ups and numbers of the players. For most of the basketball games the elub mimeo- graphed programs whieh proved quite popularg they gave the line-ups, posi- tions and numbers of eaeh team. 99 Besides selling at games, the girls took in daily prolits from the two earrdy machines in the lower hall. Over 8,500 eandy bars were sold this year. Hungry students crowd around the machines between every class period! 'With the proceeds from these ventures the Pep Ulub honored the M l'lub on April 13 at their annual banquet and prom--the highlight of the social season. At the banquet tl1e athletes were presented their letters for participa- tion in the major sports, a program of musie and readings was presented, and an excellent dinner was served. From the Federated f'lllll'K'll the couples wended their way to the gym where Hoy Gordon's orchestra from Joliet gave forth with super-smooth music. King Neptune himself welcomed the couples to the dance tloor, for the theme ofthe affair was l' l'nder the Ocean. Fish of all sizes, shapes and colors CDid you ever see a purple tish with pink polka dots ?J, lite-preservers, anchors, mermaids, seaweed, coral reefs, snails, turtles and a sunken treasure chest lined the ocean bottom as waves of crepe paper blew overhead in the breeze. A For their part of an assembly program the Pep Vlub presented a short playlet. entitled The Great Pajama Case -a hilarious court room seene. The club also has been trying to find a pin suitable for adoption by the members. The oflieers for Pep Ulub are to be commended for their untiring 'efforts to make the 19-14-45 season a profitable and a pleasant one for the girls and for the school. 100 DOI NG 'PO LEA RN President .,....,..,,,, Viee-President 4.......
