FOREWORD Allowing the present to become merely a day to day occurrence without novelty, satisfaction, or stimulus, we sometimes look for enjoyment in a future event or period. But more often we err in not relating what has taken place to what is taking place, in not making the past help us in the present, in not improving ourselves by studying our former mistakes. The fact that five or even fifty years from now we will wish for some criterion of our high school achievements and failures seems a good reason for the existence of this book. However, it is not the reason. This CHIEF may also be of some value during the school year 1941-1942. Cer- tainly the incoming freshmen will learn the ropes more quickly if he borrows a copy of this annual from an upper classman and certainly the upperclassman will find the annual of use in looking for a date for next Saturday night. To the outsider, it presents an account of Morris High School's seventy-second year. Even these may be reasons why THE CHIEF must live. A good reason, though, is not good enough. The real reason is that since the students of a country are one of its most important elements and undoubtedly will be in the future, it will be necessary for us as adults to have some means of under- standing them. lt has been said that the more closely the mind's map of the world and its problems is similar to the actual world the better the chance for successful living. When we are older, the best way of developing this map to include, in accurate proportion, youth and the students of school age will be to recapture our own experiences by means of such a book as this. We hope THE CHIEF will con- tribute favorably to your life by keeping you in contact with this period through which all must pass. -RAY MUNTS, Editor
