' ' In Honor of Dr. William W. Carter Dr. Carter was born January 27. 1876 in Hattieville. Barnwell County. South Carolina, the son of Rev. George Washington Carter and Mrs. Frances Dunbar Carter. He attended the rural elementary schools of Barnwell and Allendale Counties. The county provided a school term of only three months. However, the Carters and other families of the county engaged and paid the teacher for an additional four months each year, for they were deeply appreciative of the value of education for their children. Dr. Carter was converted as a youth of about eight years of age. and only a few years later experienced the call to the ministry. In order to prepare for this calling, he entered Benedict College. While a struggling student at Benedict, he was given financial assistance which enabled him to complete his studies. In gratitude for the help he received, he made a vow to do whatever possible to support Christian education and to assist other struggling ministerial students. He has kept this vow. Benedict College, Florida Normal College, and Morris College have been the principal beneficiaries of his generosity. Dr. Carter has achieved a distinguished record as a pastor and his life is of great inspiration to young ministers. He has held successful pastorates in South Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and New York. His last pastorate was at Trinity Baptist Church, Bronx, New York, where he served for twenty-nine years. Because of his long years of service as a Christian minister and because of his dedication to the promotion of Christian education, the Hornet Staff is happy to tender him this dedication. 4
