Sr. High Elementary Organizations Farewell Closing 63 91 110 119 Title Page-1 Odds The year of 1985-86 at MCS was a year to remember. New rooms, new personnel, and a new curriculum were all a part of the scenery when we returned to school this fall. Aside from three new teachers, we have a new principal. We are all enjoying Mr. Hess. The addition of another elementary class has resulted in one new teacher, Mrs. Cotter. Ms. Gerchman has taken the place of Mrs. Rogers who was on sabbatical for half a year in order to prepare her humanities course for twelfth grade regents English. Mr. Jacobsen is our new PE teacher, and Mrs. Currie is the new migrant tutor. Mrs. Lussier, the new elementary art teacher from BOCES, is another addition to our staff. There has been a lot of rearranging in the classrooms this year. The balcony of the auditorium has been transformed into Mr. Stafford's room. Mr. Stafford's old room is now the new fifth grade room. The former TAG room is now the computer lab. Our theme Changing Odds” has shown all the changes in our school this year. As we finish up another year and look forward to the next, we hope that it will be as exciting as this one was. The odds were definitely in our favor this year. Who's the boss around here? Mark enjoys Northern Hospitality. Nella, smiling and shaking her head. 2 - Theme Hey, You're new in town! Mr. Stafford's new room Everything's here, but where's the new principal? Theme - 3 (lAhead by a Length This year, MCS started out ahead by a length. The new curriculum, the terrific sports teams and the great people at MCS have contributed to keeping our school ahead of the rest. Together, they all helped to make our school the best that it has ever been. There are a lot of new requirements under the Regents Action Plan. The class of 1986 is required now to take three years of social studies and one year of math and science. For a local diploma, eighteen credits are required; for a regents diploma, twenty. By 1989, students are required to take four years of social studies, two years of a math and science, and one year of art or music. Our athletics department is also ahead by a length. Fall sports season ended with the football team and the girls' soccer team making it to the championships. Bask- etball season was successful. Of all the things that have contributed to making our school ahead by a length, it's the Mustang spirit that our school has. All of our students have done all they could to keep our school ahead of the rest. We should be proud of our school and of all the hard work that keeps this school going. Our Moms are Ahead by a Long Shot! Future Football Players Buddies and Pals at Work! 4 - Theme Studying hard to get ahead. Our crowd is ahead on Spirit. First grade-the start of the race. Theme - 5 Memorial to Paul Chase The yearbook staff and the Class of 1986 proudly presents the 1986 Morrisanian in memory of Paul Chase. Mr. Chase was always very fond of the students at Morris Central. His years of dedication led him to football games, soccer games, basketball games, and much, much more. Whenever Mr. Chase was seen in town, you were always sure to get a smile and a wave. For those of us who knew Mr. Chase through the years, we will miss his enthusiasm at all the school events. He was a wonderful father to his three children, each of whom graduated from Morris. He was a warm, caring husband. We the student body at MCS will truly miss the warm and friendly face in the crowds and audiences here at the home of the Mustangs for years to come. Dedication to Mrs. Foote This year we dedicate the 1986 Morrisanian to Mrs. Foote, the librarian at our school. Mrs. Foote has gone out of her way for twelve years to help the students of Morris with their projects and term papers. She's dug through the magazine stacks for all of us. She also pa- tiently read stories to the elementary students during their library time. When the library gets a bit noisy, she makes sure it's quiet so that the students who are there to study can do so. We thank her for being there when we needed her the most and for helping us to find out what we needed to know. We wish her the best of luck as she finishes her years at Morris and in the future. He has been greeted warmly by both the faculty and the students. Along with Mr. Barden and the board of education, the administration at this school works hard to provide a good learning environment. Mr. Rosas is the school treasurer, and he handles the school fi- nances. The business affairs required in running a school are many, and Mr. Rosas continues to do the best he can. Mrs. Merry, the school guidance counselor, helps the students everyday. Scheduling is always a big job, but she also maintains a complete library of career and college information so that students may begin preparing for the job world ahead. 1. Mr. Hess and Mr. Barden 2. This is a major step in graduating to the high school level! During Homecoming, Mrs. Phelps' class worked very hard on decorating their door. As a result, they enjoyed two Nina's pizzas and soda for coming in first place. For Mrs. Perkins and all sixth graders, the big event is the trip to Washington in May. For social studies this year they enjoyed studying the newspaper, visiting the Daily Star, and learning how to read the compass. In science they have joined the stars! Well, actually students have just been studying the star constellations and patterns. As the fifth grade year winds down, fifth graders realize that this year they've learned many new and exciting things that will help them in the future! They're being given assignments which will be completed and handed in on time. This year the children will be doing a lot of writing in the lan- guage arts class. In social studies, the fourth graders will be working on map skills and also study about the Iroquois Indians who lived in New York State many years ago. Science class is a busy time in fourth grade. Mrs. Moskos' class has successfully hatched and released eight monarch butterflies. The children have also been studying the earth and its lay- ers, volcanoes, and earthquakes. They will be observing honey bees the whole year in the observation hive within the classroom. Apple day proved a big success. The kids prepared apple cake, made apple recipe books, and read about John- ny Appleseed. This is going to be a busy and interesting year. Ion Hillis and his teammates at Pee Wee football. They're all discovering how exciting it is to write in cursive. Since this style of writing is so different from printing, it takes a lot of practice. There are many loops and swoops to master. These third graders do a great deal of creative writing in order to practice. Later in the year, Mrs. Haight and Mrs. Zeiner will also intro- duce multiplication and division tables. All in all, the third graders will be busy encountering a new style. Is this supposed to be FUN? Iason finds Jacob's book interesting. Steven takes a little time out for R R. Front: A. Alger, ). In the second grade, it's a year of perfecting skills learned the previous year. These skills include: being able to read, add and subtract. As well as perfecting skills, second grade also involves new insights. Visiting the village library and getting a membership card for each person in the class is only one of the many new exper- iences shared. Some of the other experiences are having special citizens of the community come in and share about their work, making and sharing books, and learning to tell time. The 1986 second grade would like to thank their teachers, Mrs. Boyd and Mrs. Layman, for teaching and sharing with them all these new experiences. Mrs. Holcombe calls this their Mini-Unit Day. The mini-unit consists of a theme for each day. Some of the themes include: indian life, butter-making, and bread baking. The first graders also sing, write, and take field trips to learn more about the theme they're studying. The children enjoyed dressing like indians, tak- ing a field trip to the Farmers' Museum, and learning many new songs. The mini- unit is a fun and exciting day of special events. 1. There were many events taking place throughout the week. Tuesday was rainbow day. Then came pajama day and number day. Friday was a day with many events. It was 50's day, and many people were arrested because it was also jail-bail day. At noon, the cheerleaders put on the homecoming luncheon. There was lots of food to eat and cake besides. At 2:00, the defendants were all convicted in the gym at a pep rally. The day ended with another pep rally and a bonfire. At the rally, the mothers did a wonderful job cheering for their sons. Saturday morning featured the Tri-Valley girls' soccer championship game. The Mustangs played well, but they lost a heartbreaker in double over- time, 1-0. As the day progressed, the Morris machine churned. The Mustangs spotted Laurens 12 points in the first five minutes, then handed them a 28 to 12 loss. Saturday after the game the Mustangs celebrated by riding through town in the parade. At the homecoming dinner, everyone refueled for the dance which ended the 1985 homecoming festivities. The 1985 football season was the most successful season since 1978. This year, under the direction of new head coach Cary Jacobsen and assistant coach Tom DeLaurentiis, the Mustangs traveled to the Tri-Val- ley championship game. The Mustangs had as awesome ground and air attack, explosive from anywhere on the field. Running behind a small but nasty of- fensive line, Brian Anderson led the way with 335 yards and 4 touchdowns. James Gregory proved that good things come in small pack- ages by following Anderson with 233 yards. Dicky Ballard, who saw full-time action after the injury of Louie Colburn, finished up the sea- son with 98 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustang air attack was powered by the strong arm of Neal Bryden, zipping the ball to Rob Joy eleven times for an average of elev- en yards. Three of these catches were for touchdowns. On the other side of the offensive line was Jeff Leahy. Leahy also caught three touchdown passes this year. Brian Anderson, the Mustang all-purpose back, caught eight passes this year for an average of eleven yards. Tom Meyers, Vern Clidden, Jim Foote, and Brian Brigham did an ex- cellent job blowing big holes in the defense to allow the backs to run the ball. They only allowed nine sacks for a loss of 64 yards. Leading the powerful Mustang defense were tackles Ballard and Gregory, with 42 and 35 tackles re- spectively. Feating up the QB all sea- son were Joy and Meyers with 6 and 4 sacks each. Anderson led the team with assists, having 28 on the year. Football — 67 Mr. Clean, Number 14. L. T. my FOOT! Buddah says a prayer joe Namath, Eat your heart out! Hey, Guys, I forgot the play. They play at all of our concerts and at some community activities as well. The Jazz Band competes at the annual Sherburne Pageant of Bands. Last year they took second. This year, they plan to take first. The Girls' Ensemble, led by Mrs. Herrick, is a wonder- ful addition to our music program. They sing at all of our concerts and, during the holidays, they sing occa- sionally at Oneonta. Singing sixteen strong, their voices fill the auditorium with music. The All-County students are our exceptionally good musicians, both vocally and instrumentally. They all must audition in order to play or sing in one of the All-County groups. There are levels at the elementary, junior high and senior high. NYSSMA students don't compete against each other as in All-County. They do, however, sing or play in or- der to receive a grade or score. Awards and the honor to participate in Area-All-State are the outcomes. Jeff Leahy —full of hot air. For Halloween, the chapter put on a haunted house which had eight different scenes. They performed a play during the Christmas week. They did several things to achieve state recognition. One of their state programs was a student body project in which they performed a skit for the New Berlin Central School students. They plan to attend the state leadership meeting in the spring. We are very proud of our FHA-HERO students. They are preparing themselves for the future, doing the things they will have to do the rest of their lives. The Morris Marching Band, under the direc- tion of Mr. Spena, had a great year. At the 36th annual Sherburne Pageant of Bands, they took first place in Class C marching competition, marching 67 strong to their hit ''Space 1985.” Morris surprised everyone with their spectacu- lar special effects, such as turning around and marching backwards. The concert band and jazz band also did well, each placing second in Class C competition. The marching band, while competing at the Otsego County Firemen's Convention, placed second. They also marched at the Springfield Fire Convention and the Otsego County Fair. Mr. Spena has made several changes in the marching band since he started conducting here in September, 1984, including a new street beat and a bigger colorguard. He still has high expectations for the band in the com- ing years. Kelly Sullivan, our outstanding drum majorette, has been leading the band since June, 1983. Kelly has been doing a great job, taking the trophy for Best Drum Majorette at the 35th annual Sherburne Pageant. She will be very hard to replace when she graduates this June. Marching Band — 105 MISS MAJORETTE NY 1985 Miss Majorette New York State, Noelle Cameron, this past summer traveled to Notre Dame University in Indiana. There she placed tenth in the World Hoop Baton Championships. She highly believes in this quote from Scott Hamilton whom she has met personally: Nothing easy shows how good you are. Nothing good comes easy. Noelle has competed year after year, but this is her highest honor yet. Noelle leads a very busy life because not only does she compete individually, but she also marches with the high school marching band. Morris is proud to claim Miss Majorette, Noelle Cameron, as our Majorette. Noelle at World Championships. They make sure everyone crosses the street safely and escort the kindergarten to their busses at the end of the day. This year's safety patrol held a high school dance with the help of the student council to raise money for their Washington trip. This was the first time students in sixth grade have ever been permitted to attend or hold a high school dance. They made a large profit which will be used to help finance trips. Co ahead, punk.
