W MORRISANIAN 1981 THESE ARE OUR STUDENTS Posterity upon, the school is hurled: The late, the tousle-head,, the tightly curled, The fat, the thin, the impertinent, the shy. The failure, and the darling who ranks high; The black, the white, the brown, the golden-haired. The always ready and the unprepared; The timid and the quiet and the loud. The earnest and the docile and the proud. On art, on business, or on beauty bent; For clothing trades or foods the parents sent The pretty and the homely and the sad. The sick, the disobedient, the too glad. The bold, the sleepy-eyed, the sweater-clad. The sweet and the demure, the especially clean. The playful, the athletic, the young queen. The little and the tall, the spoiled, neglected. Here's every phase of family life reflected. These are our joys and troubles, you perceive. These are our students; may they stay, not leave. Prudence M. Veatch, Buffalo. Education Journal,New York State Education, February, 1952. A NEW LOOK A tangle of scaffolding grew up around the building as the workmen began replacing drafty old windows with new airtight ones. Two students, Martha Gorton and Lisa Raymond, consider scxne of the changes that have taken place at MCS this year. Many students began school in September in classrooms with unpainted walls and windows covered with plastic. This year the first and second graders' windows to the world were reduced to save winter heating expenses. 2 As students returned from a weekend to resume their educational goals, they discovered an unfamiliar parasite entwined about the school. Beginning school in the fall we found the ceilings tom out and a spiderweb of metal stretching from wall to wall. Our yearbook theme, A New Look , is addressed to the many changes that are taking nlace at MCS this year. One of the most obvious changes is in the school's appearance. When we returned this fall, the nrogram to re- novate the building was in full swing. Amid this tumultuous dis- array, three new teachers found their way to Morris; Mr. Wilcox as band director and Mr. Feleppa and Mrs. Bourgeois as English teachers. Mrs. Bosco moved to the reading room and Mrs. Boggs relocated to the third grade. The yearbook has also taken on a new look . The cover states our theme which serves to unify the book. The format has also changed by the addition of full page spreads. The class section includes cony written by the students and highlights group projects. We intend this book to serve as a document of the new look that is part of our school life. A New Administration A new administration for M.C.S. which goes with the New Look of our school. Mr. Percy Cameren, Pres.,Mr.Warren Ryther 3rd, V.P., Mr. Lynn Harris, Mr. Nicholas DeLuca, Mr. Eugene Quintin. Dedication Pick of the crop. A hard and dedicated worker After 13 years of dedicated service to the school and com- munity, Carl Utter retired last year. He is now vacationing in Florida, enjoying his hard earned rest, fishing and camping. The school will never forget Carl Utter, and is deeply appreciative of the many years he spent with us. Now that's retirement. Carl takes a stroll through his garden. 5 Argentina presents Our exchange student, Guillermo Roberto DePiero, came to Morris in September all the way from Tres Arro- yos, Argentina; about 300 miles south of Buenos Aires, the country's capital. He has two older sisters, Maria Isabel and Maria Ines, who live in Buenos Aires. One is studying to be a veterinarian and the other an architect. Guillermo's father, Roberto Luis Jose, is a veterinarian and his mother, Sara Ines, a principal of a pri- vate school in their town. To this auspi- cious career he will then devote his life. ...Guillermo would like to thank the following families for helping him enjoy his pleasant stay in the good old U.S. of A.: The Dugan Family (Sept, to Nov. ) The Boggs Family (Nov. to Feb.) The Gleussner Family (Feb. to Apr.) The Wheeler Family (Apr. to July) LASTLY, THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1981 ENJOYED HAVING GUILLERMO ( BILL ) AS ONE OF THEIR PEERS. Guillermo attends a private secondary Catholic school and after graduation in the United States, he will attend three more months of school in Argentina, where he will officially gra- duate. Guillermo then plans to enroll in oceanography courses in a Buenos Aires What we do Homecoming This year's Homecoming was a well planned and successful event. It all began on Wednesday, October 1st, which was Get Excited Day! Everyone participated by signing their names to a poster to show their snirit. This was followed with a Burn 'Em Up Day and 'Legal1 Hat Day. On Friday a luncheon was held for all sports players. It was also Good Luck Day and we showed it by hanging a big horseshoe poster and putting the players' names on it. We had plenty of activities going on through out the week. Friday night at the pep rally there were lots of students and narents who participated to show their support. Then Saturday came rolling in and everybody was fired up to go! The game started off great and although the Mustangs fell behind they still fought for everything they had until the end which proved they didn't give up easily. After the game all sports players and parents were invited to a banquet held by the cheerleaders at Mrs. Boggs' house. Saturday night there was a dance which was fun for all. The cheerleaders did a great job of planning Homecoming 1980. To show our appreciation, the players and cheerleaders would like to thank all participants. Brenda Benjamin, 1980 Homecoming Queen. Mr. Naples announces the 1980 Homecoming Queen. Gina Bryant 1st runner up. 8 A Hard Struggle Coach Naples attributes the team's record of 1-5 to the fact that the team is young and inex- perienced this year, with nine freshmen, six sophmores, four juniors and seven seniors. Leav- ing the team is Barry Spaulding, John Weidman, Kevin Mitchell, Ed Deaver, Kelly Dugan, Chris Fisher, and Jack Altrath. The high point of the season was our one and only win over Laurens, 1 1-6, the last game of the year. The team played hard, but was unable to bring home the wins that the Mustangs had hoped to claim. The Junior Varsity had two outstanding games, one with South New Berlin which was a 6-6 tie and a victory over Laurens 3 1-20. Bottom Row- L. Sorensen, B. Spaulding, T. Weidman, D. Boest, D. Again this year the cheerleaders planned Homecoming week with a spirit theme and a dance on Saturday night to raise money for the new varsity basketball sweaters. The girls worked hard all year preparing cheers, chants, pom-pon routines, and making posters to sup- port the teams throughout the year. Another important addition this year was the pep squad formed by Mrs. Gunther, which is composed of 15 future cheerleaders who helped support the players and cheerleaders at the home basketball games. The captains for the year were Lori Treiber for the J.V.'s and Diane Gunther for the Varsity. Next year the squads will miss the loud voices of Deb Decker, Diane Gunther, and Carolyn Walling. The team was coac- hed by last year's J.V. coach, Peter Naples. The team was made up of eight seniors: Bill Boggs, Ed Colburn, Dave DeLuca, Kelly Du- gan, Doug Martin, Scot Stauch, John Weidman, and our exchange stu- dent, Geesh DePiero; and two juniors: Duke Hoag and Jay Quintin. The newspaper will be cover- ing a wide variety of subjects ranging from school and local issues to national and inter- national issues. Putting a yearbook together was a new experience for most of us so the yearbook got off to a slow start, but we hung in there and soon found that with a little hard work and determination we could do it. Our apologies for the hand typed copy. We had hoped to have the type set to give the book a more professional appearance but due to inflation it wasn't poss- ible. However there is always next year. Mrs. Foote's everyday duties include reading books to the elementary stu- dents . Library We all enjoy having Mrs. Foote back at MCS, after a year of absence. Heading the library de- partment is a large responsible job which she and Mrs. McWilliams handle with efficiency and dedication. Top: J.Smith, S.Stauch, F.lam- burg, W.Boggs, C.Walling, D. As a .jack-of-all- trades, he is not only a director and an in- strumental instructor, he also repairs instru- ments and arranges music for the band. Many long hours of work are put in every day to keep the music program running smooth- The Christmas program involves not only the older students but the elementarv classes and chorus as well. he sprina show is always an original musical or variety show, where the students have a chance to do their own thing!!!!!!!
