SHAKESPEARE Morris Rips Edmeston, 55-0 By JAN STURDEVANT Star Sports Editor Morris, Franklin Win Big Tri-Valley Association foot- ball co-favorites remained un- beaten Saturday as Morris wal- loped South New Berlin, 32-0, and Franklin breezed past Gil- bertsville, 25-0. The scrappy Morris defense set up two scores over SNB. Jim Palmer and Fred Grenz blocked a punt on the South- town 30, setting the stage for John Pegg’s second touchdown, a 21-yarder. Earlier, Pegg had gone a yard to cap a drive set up by Ken Stone’s 26-yard pass to Bill Pickens. In the third quarter, Palmer blocked another punt and guard Royce Webster rambled 24 yards for the touchdown. It was the second TD of the season for Webster and his third in two years, quite an accomplishment for an interior lineman. Doug George, leading rusher with 79 yards, added a fourth touchdown on a two-yard dive and Stone passed 40 yards to Pickens for another score. Pegg ran for one extra point, and Stone passed to George for the other. South New Berlin, which coach John Dimao says “hit as hard as anyone we’ve played,” only maintained one serious drive, a second quarter march to the seven set up by Paul Pi- atti’s interception. Franklin 7 12 0 -25 Gilbertsville 0 0 0 0—0 EDMESTON — Scrappy Mor- ris stamped itself the Tri-Valley team to beat Friday afternoon with a 55-0 gallop past arch- rival Edmeston. The game figured to be a pick-’em” affair, with both teams rated high among the TV contenders. But the sluggish Panthers were no match for the fired-up visitors. Morris started fast, scoring early in the opening period when quarterback Ken Stone went five yards on a keeper play. Stone tossed to Doug George for the PAT and Morris led, 7-0. Later in the quarter, Stone fired his first of three touch- down passes, a 40-yarder to Lynn Joy. John Pegg’s rush for the point was stopped. George and Pegg chopped out the ground yardage on a sec- Dnd-quarter Mustang drive that started on the Morris 31. George’s one-yard plunge ripp- ed up the middle for the extra point. Morris made it 22-0 when Fred Grepz tackled Edmeston quarterback Bill Schwerd in his own end zone for a safety. Edmeston threatened just be- fore the half ended, but three long passes fell incomplete in- side the Morris 10. JOY SPARKS WINNERS Joy recovered an Edmeston fumble to start the Mustangs go- ing again in the third period. Two running plays and a pen- alty gave Morris a first down at the Edmeston 11, and Pegg slashed off-tackle for the score. Pegg darted over with the point that made it 29-0. Burly Bob Zachow, who sat out the first half, was at full- back for the Eds after intermis- sion. But the 210-pounder, who scored on three long runs the week before at New Berlin, wasn’t able to spark the sputter- ing Edmeston offense Joy recovered another fumble late in the period, and the visi- tors scored on the first series o.f the fourth quarter. Stone passed 15 yards to John Matteson for the touchdown. At this point, the desperate Panthers took to the air, but the alert Morris defense was equal to the threat. Joy picked off a Schwerd aerial and ran it back 35 yards for the touchdown that made it 41-0. Zachow completed an option pass to John York for a first down at the Morris 28, but Bill Pickens intercepted his next toss- and legged it back to his own 16. A penalty set Morris back after George and J egg had driven to the Edmeston nine- yard line, but a Stone pass to Matteson gave the visitors a first! down at the five. George slashed over for the touchdown and Pete Chase ran the point. Pickens picked off another Zachow pass at the Edmeston 35 and twisted all the way down the right sidelines for the final touchdown. Chase plunged for the PAT that made it 55-0. employed a quarterback shuffle to produce a 44-0 win over Gil- bertsville. Bo j Hoffman and sophomore Ken Stone did the shuffling, Hoffman passing 15 yards to Doug George for one touchdown and going three yards on a keeper for another, and Stone flipping a 34-yarder to Lynn Joy and a 15-yarder to Bill “Slim” Pickens, both good for touchdowns. Stone add- ed a third score on a 15-yard rollout. George blasted 11 yards for the first Morris TD, while guard Royce Webster account- ed for the other score, going four yards after recovering .eammate John Pegg’s fumble. Led by linebackers Dan Nich- ols and Jim Palmer, the Morris defense held Gilbertsville to just 28 yards total offense. Morris totaled 330 yards, 212 on the ground and 118 through the air. Morris Is Hot When It Gets Fired-Up By CHUCK FIERSON Star Staff Writer MORRIS — And tnen there was one. This pretty much tells t h e situation in the Tri • Valley League. Fired - up Morris, ahead by only two with less than two minutes left in t h e game, intercepted a Franklin pass deep in Mustang territory and converted it into a 27-19 win over Franklin Saturday. Tile win puts Morris high atop the league with a 4-0-1 record. Franklin, who is now 4-2, drop- ped to third place by virtue of Mt. Upton’s 41-32 win over Ed- meston Friday night. Morris used passing to its advantage as it scored on two long bombs. Ken Stone threw to Lynn Joy for a 60 yard score and John Pegg hit Bill Pick- ens for a 41-yarder. Dick Ryther and Pegg added Morris scores — Ryther’s com- ing on a 65-yard run to clinch the game. Laurens Deadlocks Morris Unbeaten Morris still leads the Tn-Valley Association football race. But the Morris halo Is slightly tilted after 6-6 tie with fired-up Laurens Saturday. CHERRY VALLEY-Sub half- back Dick Ryther galloped for 122 yards and a touchdown Fri- day as unbeaten Morris defeat- ed Cherry Valley, 27-0. The victory kept Morris ahead in the Tri - Valley Association football race. The Panthers are now 5-0-1 on the season, but face a tough opponent in next week’s season-closer at Mt. Upton. Mt. Upton will be tough,’ predicts Morris coach John Di- mao. “But I was really pleased with the kids yesterday. After winning that big game from Franklin last Saturday, I was afraid they might let down a little. But they hit hard all the way.” PEGG SCORES THREE The Panthers dominated the game, scoring in every quarter. Halfback John Pegg accounted for three touchdowns, all on two- yard runs that capped long ground marches. Pegg rushed for 83 yards. Ryther, converted from guard to sub for the injured Doug George, had the other Morris touchdown on a 20-yard burst in the second quarter. A fift touchdown, on a scoring pas from Ken Stone to Bill Picken; was called back. Stone passed to Pegg for th first extra point. Bob Hoffma passed to Ryther for one poin and ran for another. DEFENDERS STAR Once again linebackers Da Nichols and Jim Palmer starre for Morris, along with end Lyn Joy, whose third period recov ery of a fumbled Cherry Valle punt runback set up the thir Morris TD. Bill Pickens made 22 foul shots out of 30 for a percentage of 73. He also made 36 field goals out of 87 attempts for a percentage of 41. These were the leading shooting percentages for the team.
