Tri- Valley 8-Man Kicks Off JERRY HURLEY at Morris Is the most optimistic of all the coaches. Back after a year s ab- sence due to illness, the veteran mentor rates h s team a dcfinate- ly good chance' for the title de- spite a poor season last fall. Hurley has six starters back from Ray Clement's 1960 team, in- cluding the entire forward wall comprised of ends Jerry Peters and Larry Frederick, guards Don- ald Joy and Chuck Gunther and center Dave Payton. Others who may get a shot at one of the line positions include Eddie George, Howard Elliott, Jim Matteson, Barry Valentine and Greg Smith. Hurley s single - wing backfield will revolve around triple - threat tailback Lee Peters. Soph Steve McWilliams is tabbed for one of the halfback spots with either Jim Middaugh or Bob BeHott, both juniors, running from the other berth. In back of this quartet are soph Paul Kogui and freshman Jim Palmer 3 Tied in Tri-Valley 8-Man Otego, Morris Revenge Wins Tie Edmeston Otego and Morris avenged earli- er defeats Friday to bring about a three - way tie for the Tri - Valley Eight - Man Football League lead with Edmeston. All three teams have 3-2 records with only two games left. Unbeaten Edmeston The see - saw duel at Edmes- ton developed into a contest bet- ween Turner and Terry Grave of the home team and Lee Peters of Morris. Turner finally enabled Edmes- ton to prevail when with the score 20-18. and less than five minutes remaining he scooped up a Morris fumble and ran 35 yards to score. The play came as Morris was marching for its fourth touchdown and was made possible by a vis cious tackle by Danny Moffre. League Leaders Bow, 20-13; Otego Turns Back Franklin MORRIS—The Morris Central School eight-man foot- ball team knocked off previously unbeaten Edmeston Wednesday to tighten the Tri-Valley League race. Morris scored two first period touchdowns and always led as it handed the league leaders a 20- 13 defeat. In the day's other game Otego held on to beat Franklin. 18-7. and hold a second place tie with Morris. Morris, Edmeston in 8-Man Tie; Morris Routs Otego to Tie Eds for Title Morris, a doormat last year and lor the first two games this sea- son. and ever-powerful Edmes- ton won their final Tri-Valley Lea- gue eight-man football games Friday to finish in a tie for first place. Both teams finished with 4-2 records. Morris made its dramatic come- back from losses in its first two games complete by dumping de- fending champion Otego. 32-20. be- hind the sparkling play of big Lee Peters. Edmeston withstood a fourth - period comeback by Franklin to win. 19-14. and regain a partial share of the domination it held, over the eight-man loop prior to last year when a tie with Otego on the final day robbed Howard Lull's team of a fourth straight There will be no playoff be- tween Morris and Edmeston which split a pair of regular - season meetings with each other. This was decided upon in a meeting, of the league’s four coaches. Peters, a 6-3 versatile athlete completely stole the show in Mor- ris’ season - ending triumph be- fore a home crowd. He scored four touchdowns to run his sea- sons total to 12 and passed for Morris’ other score. Morris led all the way. build- ing up a 26-6 halftime lead and then coasting home. Peters scored three times be- fore the intermission on runs of six and four yards, and on a 17- yard romp after blocking an Otego punt. He also passed to Jim MkJdaught for Morris’ other first half score on a play covering 32 yards. Lee weund up Morris’ biggest scoring parade of the season in on what began as a quarterback sneak. Lee Peters, the league’s top scorer, broke through the subbom Franklin defenses on two scoring runs in the fourth period. The runs, one from 5 yards out after Peters connected with Charlie Fredericks on a 50-yard play and the other on a brilliant 82-yard sweep, broke up a 04) tie and pro- vided Morris with its third straight victory. At Otego. a rambunctious Morris sextet snapped back from two suc- cessive losses to stage the upset. Lee Peters sparked the Morris attack. The big quarterback pass- ed to Don Joy for the first score after Jerry Childs put Otego in front early on a five-yard sweep. Peters wrapped up Morris first victory with his running, going the final 20 yards on a bootleg play on one drive and capping another with a plunge from a yard out. Don Hamilton of Otego completed the scoring on a 10-yard jaunt. Morris 0 6 6 6-18 Otego 0 7 0 8-13 Franklin 0 0 0 14-14 Edmeston 7 6 6 8—25 Edmeston now has won three of four while Morris and Otego are right behind with 2-2 records. Franklin has won one of four. Lee Peters and Bob Bellott did the scoring on the ground for Morris to counteract the passing of Edmeston in a wild game that saw three touchdowns called back because of penalties. Edmeston lost two scores because of penal- ties, one of them a 75-yard kick- off return. TWO QUICK SCORES Peters churned over from a yard out and Beiiott swept end for 20 yards to score a pair of Morris touchdowns in the first ■iod. A Lee Peters to Jerry ders brotherly pass netted an .xtra point. Edmeston came back with a Terry Graves to Robin Turner pass for 37 yards and a TD in the second period and Turner passed to Dale Bennett for the point that made it 13-7 at the half. Both teams had a touchdown recalled in the third period and early in the fourth but it was Morris that scored for keeps next to wrap up the game. Lee Peters dashed over from the three and Bellott ran for the point. Edmeston’s last gasp was a Turner to Bennett pass for 24 yards and the final touchdown. title.
