It is therefore only fitting that it be dedicated to the man who has guided them over the rough spots to a great year. This man, who has been at Morningside since it was founded seven years ago, has put in countless hours in after- school appointments and in helping students with their problems. His ever-present smile and his sound advice have been an inspiring example. After three years at Inglewood High, he came to Morningside where he was the advisor to the first freshman class. His work with the language department, with the Spanish Club, and as a counselor have made him a real force in school life. We gladly dedicate the 1958 annual to- MR. This has truly been a great year. We have just finished what I consider to be one of the finest school years that it is possible to have on any high school campus in America. The students have studied well for their classesg you have won many scholarshipsg and at the same time you have had high standards in music, drama, athletics, and student govern- ment participation. To the seniors, I hope that you make as good or better records in the world as you have at Morningside. To the students that remain at Morningside. I challenge you to bring your class stand- ards as high or higher than this great class of '58. --ELDON F. BOY D. SENIOR CABINET enior Class Looking at the proud class of 1958 one sees former Morningside students who are about to take their place as loyal citizens of the community. At the start of their long career at MHS in the Fall of l954, these Seniors were only a group ol' dis- organized Freshmen. After electing class oflicers and getting accustomed to campus life, they were soon united and ready to plan their class activities for the year, They started the year off by L'Getting Acquainted' at the dance of the same name which was spon- sored by the then Senior class. Some of their own big activities included the Freshmen Sports Night, class picnic. and a Frosh Talent Show. They also had the customary bake sales and several class parties. As Sophomores, they held the Frosty Fantasy at Christmas time. Greeting cards were sold in order to make money, and other sales for the same purpose were a fudge sale, pickle sale, and Easter egg sale. There was also a Sophomore Picnic, and towards the end of the year Senior rings were chosen. Many graduating Monarchs can still remember the few trying months in which classes had to be conducted in tents. During the times when it rained the water would seep into the tents and get stu- dents as well as chairs soaking wet. Moving into the Junior year, the class name t Majestics J and the colors Cbrown and mint greenj were chosen, and the Senior sweaters and jackets were ordered. The class of '58 planned the second combined Junior-Senior Prom, Moonglow, which was a big success. The class play, Teach Me How to Cry. was also a very successful event. Among the sales held that year were those for Ivy League hats, snow cones and cotton candy. The cartoon show was another event put on by the class. The decorating for the Senior Banquet, ushering at commencement. and providing flower girls were some of the services given by the Majestics. Seniors began their final year by honoring the Freshmen at the annual Get-Aequainted dance. The largest moneymaking event. the Senior Play. I Remember Mama, took place in November and brought the class S500 toward the cost of future events. Tommy Jones' orchestra provided the music for I Al X SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS-Fall ttopj: Jim Cobb, Carl Rydingsword, Pat Ganulin. Spring tbottomlz Glenda Brooks, Hcdy Davis, Marilyn Perry. Around the World, which was the Senior Hop. The Senior Walk was painted several times during the year. HIMLL Highlights, the production in which five local high schools pooled their talents, was pre- sented in March at another school. The month of April brought forth one of the year's biggest and long- est-to-be remembered events, the Junior-Senior Prom. April Love was again staged at the Hollywood Riviera Country Club in Brentwood Hills. 6'Jazz A La Carte preceded the big activity of May, Senior Week. The four-day Senior Week began with an asembly of Senior talent in the auditorium. On the next day the Seniors took over Ingle- wood's city government. Then on Wednesday they took over teaching and administrative positions of the school. The week was beiittingly climaxed by the Senior Holiday or Ditch Day. This took place at Disneyland and was attended by over 300 Seniors, who had to pay only for part of the day's activities. The Senior Banquet in June was paid for entirely from the class treasury. Cooking, serving, and cleaning up were taken care of by the P-TA, Senior Mothers, and the Dad's Club. Class Wills and Prophecies were read here in an amusing story form. The theological inspiration por- tion of graduation was given in the auditorium in the form of Baccalaureate Services. After weeks of rehearsals, the class of 1958 graduated in a beautiful ceremony at Centinela Bowl on June 19. Commencement was followed by a Graduation Party that same night at the Hollywood Pal- ladium. Money from lollipop and fudge sales during the year helped pay for this final Senior event and the 4 a.m. breakfast that followed it. atricia Abbott House of Rep. Pep Club Sec. As was the case in Athens then, they are the hope and pride of MHS and Inglewood now. The 1958 Ephebians were finally chosen by faculty members after the entire senior class voted on the 24 students whom they thought had best fulfilled the necessary qualifications, which included scholastic accomplishments and school service. Selected for membership were Chris Cottle, Dorothy Ahlburg, Burt Davies, Hedy Kay Davis, Phyllis Balliett, Jim Cobb, Betty Lusby and Dale Anderson. They were initiated into this society at graduation upon the recital of the following oath, a translation of the one used in ancient Athens: We will never bring disgrace to this our city by any act of dishonesty or cowardice, nor ever desert our suffering comrades in the ranksg we will fight for the ideals and sacred things of the city, both alone and with many, we will revere and obey the city's laws and do our best to incite a like respect in those above us who are prone to annul or set them naughty we will strive unceasingly to quicken the public sense of civic duty. Thus, in all these ways, we will transmit this city not only not less, but far greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us. Morningside is privileged in having the only Ephebian Society in the County of Los Angeles. The first ofticial announcement of this year's Ephebians came at the annual Scholarship Awards Banquet. Scholarships This year the scholarships were not as easy to come by as they have been in the past years-not that they have ever been a cinch -due to the fact that more and more students are trying for them. More and more they are finding that scholarships are not as easy to come by as they thought they would be. MHS students held their own this year, though. The Monarch Majestics were well- qualified to meet such goals, just as the knights of old were able to meet the goals they had set before themselves. Listed below are the scholarships that were awarded to MHS Seniors. This is not a com- plete list. but due to the date of SCEPTRE printing these were all that could be printed. One of the first things done was the ordering of senior rings by all members of the class. Following this was a doughnut sale, and a Bake Auction in which Ken Ton acted as the auctioneer. Two noon movies, Mr. Roberts and East of Edenjl were sponsored for the benefit of the junior class so that the Student Council could pay back money borrowed from the class treasury to finance the Four Preps assembly. Next was the choosing of the name, colors and emblem for the class. They chose the colors coral and beige. and the name Chevaliers.', Soon after they chose the senior jacket and sweater styles. To raise funds for the class treasury a Golden Crumble Candy Sale was put on outside of school. Soon afterwards two noon dances were held to promote the Junior-Senior Prom. This year the Prom. planned and executed by the juniors. went over very well. It was held at the Riviera Country Club with the Penguins entertaining from 10 to 10:30 p.m. The Keith Williams combo was featured for the rest of the evening. The color scheme was of lavcndar. yellow and white. with wishing wells and hand-made baskets for decorations. Finally. the junior class served refreshments at the Education Fair at MHS. Profits from this will go to the quad fund in the name of the class of '59. Ofiicers who made all this activity possible were: first semester, president. Gary Lofgreng vice-president. The Brother- hood Assembly. held in February. was one of the most outstanding presented. For good entertainment many top movies were presented. These movies incltided quality ones such as Rebel Without a Cause. East of Eden starring James Dean. 'lCarousel, Mister Roberts, and Spirit of St. louis. Movies tor next year are to be of the same high grade entertainment. The julxc box in the cafeteria was provided for the Monarchs through student council. For the period ol' time that the juke box was in the cafeteria many hours were lilled with music. Save the Child drive. for the school we support in Greece. was one of the successful charity drives. Chris Cottle Vice President, Dottie Ahlburg ' in If Secretary, Pat Ganulin Treasurer, Ron Moore ounci Council is always thinking of the Student Body. For example, the campaign assembly was arranged to provide an interesting presentation of the candidates of class and student body officers. As a gift to the student body, at the conclusion of first semester, the student council presented the 'iF0ur Preps in an assembly. During the year. in February, the Monarchs appeared on television, Channel ll, on the Dick Whit- tinghill Dance Party. This was possible through arrangements made by Council and Mr. Eldon Boyd, prin- cipal. Also in February many outstanding athletes, the student body president, and the Pep Squad were seen on the 76 Sports Club. This appearance was also made possible through student council. Many projects supported by student council are not as visible as those previously mentioned. However, everything done is for the benefit of the majority. It is for the students to uphold and follow student government. for as Abraham Lincoln once said, It is a government of the people, for the people, and by the people. It is for us to take advantage of the privilege of student government. Front-Valerie Venger, Sally Wilson. Hedy Davis. O The House of Representatives, under the direction of Dave Holland first semester and Dorothy Ahlburg second semester, accomplished a great deal this year. Meeting every morning under the direction of Dave Reiss, MHS director of counseling and guidance, they helped tackle the many problems that confront the student government. The representatives, who are elected by their third period classes, hold section meetings in 'these classes. They then carry the problems that are discussed there to House where they are acted upon. Their activities this semester have included arranging to have walk signs put up, raising money for a telephone call from foreign student Fee Feustel to her parents in Germany, conducting the campus clean-up campaign and attempting to improve assembly conduct. They have sponsored the car rodeo and the narcotics assembly, and they have co-sponsored school dances. Other activities include the charity drive. the student court and the publicising of school activi- ties. They also revised the activity point system. The thing that has impressed me most is that when they start a project they at least work on it. They never just talk about thingsf, One of their most publicized projects was the SLOB or campus clean-up campaign. Jingles, posters and the Lion's Roar all helped to put over this campaign. As a result Morningside had for a time a clean campus. The narcotics assembly was another outstanding contribution. Morningside was one of the few schools to see this realistic, police-training Elm. It showed the methods of detection and the horrible results of this prominent menace. The walk signs were a rather belated project. A good many dithculties arose to hinder this project and it stretched far beyond the original time that was planned, but finally was completed late in the year. There were almost 40 reporters and editors, compared to only about half as many in the l956-1957 school year. Though plagued by a shortage of funds, development of the practice of putting out occasional two-page issues helped to guarantee coverage of most Monarch activities. Since many of the staff members will be back next year the staff will probably be even larger. As a result, first-year students will receive a full semester of instruction before they actually start working on the paper. There may also be enough advanced students to have new editors each semester. ' The larger staff will also mean better coverage for an increasing number of campus activities and athletic teams. It is put out mainly by the annual staff, a group of students who spend one period a day plus time after school and on weekends and school holidays to make this book possible. An increasingly heavy load of work was borne by the Sceptre staff photog- raphers, who not only took many more pictures than in past years, but also developed and printed them. In addition to the regular annual staff members, several school photographers and members of the Lion's Roar staff helped considerably with certain parts of this book. Here at Morningside under the direction of Kenneth Ton the drama department is an important part of school life. All of their efforts-from a short skit to a three act play-are sure to be good entertainment. Monarchs are rightly proud of this fine department and they show it by their support at each production. In our opinion these plays are the finest in the vicinity. We salute the department and their outstanding instructor for their efforts in this field. Nil Remember' Mama? 7 I Remember Mama, the heart-warming story of a Norwegian family living in San Francisco and this year's senior play, starred Ruth Pettijohn, Anna Menelaus and Chet Atlas. lt was presented near the close of 1957. Supporting the stars were Janice Shrader, Julie Guisinger, John Chappell and Ken Del Conte. The story, which was told by Katrin, the daughter who wanted to write, included such incidents in the family history as the family's method of dividing the week's earnings, Dag- mar's trip to the hospital, Katrin's graduation present, the death of Uncle Chris, and finally Katrinis success as a writer. 1 The combined ellorts of the music and drama rg, r-2 A departments produced this year's Christmas pro- ' 4 t M gram The Six Senses of Christmas. The play was presented in ebruary a ,was seen for two nights. The story tells of an American family, consisting of four daughters and the usual two parents. Each somehow in- volves the others in his problems until everything is in a confusing tangle. Everyone's problems are finally straightened out, however, and the family returns to its usual state. I l T 1 Mn y, , 15: 'x HA Young Mlainfs FQLHCYM A Young Man's Fancy, a three-act play presented in March, was sponsored by the Ingle- wood Teachers Association. All profits were put into a Scholarship Fund for the Future Teachers of America from both Morningside and Inglewood High Schools. The amusing comedy, which was about a timid young boy in a summer camp, starred Gary Carlin, Ken Del Conte, Ruth Pettijohn, Judy Jensen, Sandy Phelps and Tom Grates. Uneatacit Plays Another interesting drama activity has been a series of one act plays dramatized by the various periods. Period 1 presented Cup of Kindness and Pink and Patches. 'tGray Bread and Elizabeth were the contributions of Period 2. Period 3 presented New Fountainf, the cerebral palsy play, and 6'Cracked Ice. Roughly Speaking, Three Cents a Day and Just Another Saturday were shown by Period 6. 'Forgotten Many' was seen during the Easter vacation. These plays were usually viewed during lunch time with drama students and other Monarchs acting as the audience. They gave the students an excellent opportunity to work on the stage with costumes, make up and lighting. They also gave many students a chance for acting experience they would have otherwise missed. x DV u t A . Morningside students played prominent parts. Q The outstanding job don-e on this civic undertaking is another reason we at Morningside teel our drama department IS one of the best in the city. HA Bell for Adlainton A Bell for Adamo boasted of two things which made it a fitting close to a good year. It was one of the first times the play had ever been presented by a high school drama group, and it was enacted by the largest cast of the year. This cast was headed by Ken Del Conte, Chris Cottle, Burton Davies, Sylvia Santany and Warren Chick. I' gr r l' The color and the form of traditional and modern art is expressed on Morningside's campus by members of Monarch art and crafts classes. Crafts classes have produced a multiplicity of articles intended primarily for their own use. such as leatherwork and ceramic objects. Art classes have produced not only those things for their own use-such as paintings, modeling item, drawings, mobiles, etc.-but also a wide variety of things for the benefit of the whole school-such as posters, program covers, banners, stage scenery. etc. On the following pages is a small sampling of some of the best work to be produced by members of the art and crafts classes. Combining m my wins with but a few dual and triangular losses. the Varsity placed fourth in th: Inglewood Relays. and was favored to take the Pioneer League Championships. Record smashing performances. such as a 9.9 hundred and 49.6 quartermile by sprint siizr Steve Haas. were many. Haas also combined with Dave Cooper, Jerry Holman, and John Peterson in winning the National Mile Relay championship. Two school records were made in the 440 and 880 relays during the Inglewood Rellys, even though these teams came in second and third. In the distance medley at Santa Barbara. Dave Brown, Paul Perrine, Furman Marsh, and Steve Haas came through with a victory. The Bees won about half of their meets, but the Cees, led by high scorers Arnold Tosh and Dick Masterson, went undefeated at the time this book went to press. They wer: f gvcr,:,l to take the Pioneer League. All the teams should be powerful next year with most of .172 strength lying in the juniors. At the time this book went to press, the swimmers under Head Coach Bob Hoffman and Eugene Hatfield for diving, had high hopes of placing well in the Pioneer League, one of the best in the CIF. Beverly Hills and El Segundo, two teams in the league, are expected to finish one and two in the CIF. The best meet of the season was against highly-rated Santa Monica, in which the Mon- arch Varsity won by the score of 46 to 40. The Bees and Cees beat El Segundo for one of their finest meets. Among the swimmers who hold top marks are Steve Horton, Warren Pickens, Mark Witt and Art Hale. The divers, led by Jeff Nicolaysen, have added considerable points to the swimming meets. 1 v- - 1 rv-wma:-f ,,..a .aa m yum'-v-111-' -Ju.. - 5 J A N-mi.. Swim Team This is the second year that Morningside has had atgirls' swim team that competed with other schools. The girls' swim team is an activity associated with Girls' Athletic Association. Though not much publicity was accredited to these girls during the school year, they com- peted against such schools as El Segundo, Hawthorne, Chadwick, Lakewood, and Long Beach. During swim season there was a regular practice twice a week. To become a member of swim team a girl may go out when try-outs are held. l Front: L. Wells, C. Schneider. J. Kruschke. M. Twenty-two girls made up the Advanced Modern Dance Class this year. lt was a full and busy year for them as they performed for P-TA programs, Women's Club conventions, Little Night Piano Concert, Clothing Fashion Show, Educational Fair, HIMLL Highlights, and other special programs for community clubs. The combined classes amounted to 74 students. Last year there were only two Modern Dance Classes, this year there were three and plans have been made for a fourth next year. The combined dance classes presented a most successful dance concert, entitled MDANCE lS ....... . It featured 23 spectacular and interpretive contemporary dances. This was the second year that the Modern Dance Award was given. It is given to the senior who has contributed the most to Modern Dance in her years at MHS. This can be by her ability in dance, enthusiastic support of the program, or choregraphy. She is selected by the advanced class and voted on with secret ballots.
