School Activities The Sophomore class was host to an initiation party on September 15th. After the Freshmen had been Htaken care ofn, dancing and refreshments were enjoyed by all. At Christmas time the Student Council sponsored a Christmas dance. Refresh- ments were served afterwards. A Christmas program was given by the grade children and a few of the high school students, on the afternoon of December 22nd for the parents and community. Each room held a party and opened their gifts. All of the service men who had attended Morley school received a box of candy for Christmas. This project was carried out by the teachers who made the candy and sent it to them. Letters of thanks have been received from all of the service men. The Morley school participated in a magazine campaign sponsored by Crowell-Collier Publications and directed by Bob Rush of Cedar Rapids. Clayton Hoppe was chosen as local campaign manager. Chairman for the various classes were as follows: Janet Seeger, Senior, Larry Williams, Junior, Shirley Hansen, Sophomore, Kathleen Hay, Freshman, Dorothy Baute, Junior High. During the campaign 3259.50 magazines were sold of which the school's share was 395.15 High salesman for the campaign was Janet Siver, Eighth grade. The money raised was placed in the Athletic fund. The girls' basketball team took a trip to Meservey, Iowa, on December 16th where they played that team. After the game refreshments were served to the girls at the school. Then they went home with different girls from Meservey to spend the night. The girls had a very nice. time. S iOn December 14th, three of our Morley students gave speeches on Tuberculosis and Heart Disease over radio station WSUI in Iowa City. The students were Joyce Gerdes, Ruth Mitchell and Marjorie Mitchell. The students of Morley were entertained by a Magician and Ventriloquist, also by Dwight L. Wood, Baritone and his wife, Pianist, in November. Four Morley girls enterd the lsaac Walton Conservation Essay Contest. They were Kathleen Hay, Carol Eldred, Carol Pulver and Nancy Hoppe. Carol Pulver placed 3rd and won a flash bulb camera. The grade students also sent in many scrap books. Rita Russell placed lst with hers and won a wrist watch. A Declamatory contest was held this year with eight students competing. V Joyce Gerdes was winner of the dramatic division, Evelyn Findley was winner of the humorous division, and Carol Pulver was the winner of the oratorical division. These three girls went to Monticello where they competed with pupils from four other schools. Evelyn won a second division rating, while Joyce and Carol each won a third division rating. Most of the American Literature class went to Olin to see the movie HHamletH. It was enjoyed by those who attended. The girls' basketball team was given a turkey supper on February 21st at the Quality Cafe in Anamosa for winning the County Tournament. Their host and hostess were Mr. and Mrs. Behnke. On February 7, Louis Lemke, Game Warden, visited Morley school and gave a speech on HWild Life and Soil Conservation.H He also showed the students a film Z8
