You have reached a milestone in your life, and you are about to enter the professional world of work or continue your education at the graduate level or both. Should you enter the world of work, remember all that Morgan has instilled in you about the role of the professional and the need to accept challenges as well as be initiatory in all your efforts. Should you pursue graduate education, be most conscious of the independent nature of graduate study and the desire to discover new ideas and concepts which will add to the storehouse of knowl- edge for all humanity. Your world will also broaden now in terms of family and loved ones. You will be a role model for younger members of your fam- ily. You will be a symbol for your own offspring. You will be a source of pride for your parents and older relatives. You must take care of your loved ones and remember your responsibility to them and to your extended family of Morganites. There are many decisions to be made in future years, and must be certain to be a part of that decision-making process. Chart your course and make your contribution whether it is in the natural sciences, the social sciences, or the humanities. Never forget your heritage, “Fair Morgan” and the fact that “You Owe Your Children a Black College.” To each and every one of you, I wish you good health, excellent careers, and joyful living. — Earl S. The Centenary Bible Institute (1867-1890), the first epoch, was established by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church to train young Black men as ministers for their congregations. The Centenary Biblical Institute was governed by a five-member board of trust- ees composed primarily of ministers. Morgan College (1890 1939), the second important phase in the institution’s development, signaled a broadening of the mission to educate men and women for careers other than the ministry. With the changing of the name to Morgan College, the mission became “to prepare Black persons of good moral standing for careers in public school teaching and other careers.” Morgan College remained private and church-controlled, but its govern- ing board was expanded to include prominent citizens in the community. Morgan State College (1939-1975) was created in 1939 when the institution was purchased from the Methodist Episcopal Church by the State of Maryland. As a state-supported college, goverance passed to an independent board of trustees (from 1939 to 1967) and to the State Board of Trustees of State Col- leges (from 1967 to 1975). This third phase of development saw Morgan’s mission expand from teacher training to a balanced liberal arts education. Morgan State University (1975 ) is the fourth stage in the institu- tion’s development. In its transition from being a predominately Negro College to becoming a multi-racial university, Morgan retains its historical commitment to train Black students in liberal arts, selected professions, and graduate study. Now one of three doctoral degree granting institutions in the state, Mor- gan has become Maryland’s first urban-oriented university. THE ALMA MATER • FAIR MORGAN FAIR MORGAN. WE LOVE THEE.
