MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY BALTIMORE MARYLAND UNIVERSITY VOLUME VI Carnegie Hall • A symbol of our endurance SAVE MORGAN Morgan in the Eighties? As we enter the decade of the eighties, we find ourselves confronted and catapulted with problems from all direc- tions. The perennial merger question, the decline of student enrollment, the retrenchment of valuable faculty members, and the escalation of tuition costs have all added to the mounting dilemma concerning the future existence of Mor gan as an historically Black institution. Although we have permitted ineffective “marshmellow” leadership to lull and cajole us into a tangled web of confu- sion. this seemingly hopeless situation can be amended. If we are to survive and prosper as a culturally unique entity, we must now develop the tenacity and the courage to become mutually dependent upon ourselves for our own well being. As suggested by Rev. Jesse Jackson and Dr. Samual Yette. our future can be determined by no one other than ourselves. The Bakke and Webei cases have also served as forboding testimonies to the precariousness of addiction to others. As we chart our course for the eighties, let us remember that: good or bad. rich or poor. Morgan, coupled with all other Black institutions, is a product of the Black communi- ty -----our baby a product of us. by us. for us. We made Morgan; Morgan made us; We are Morgan. Morgan in the eighties is the issue of our ability to survive as a people. Mr. Roberts has been instrumental in aiding our Seniors in seeking challenging career fields commensurate with their abilities. Mr Roberts has implemented Career Day, where prospective employers speak to prospective employees, and seminars on interviews and preparation of resumes. Over the many years, Mr. Roberts has been successful in placing hundreds of students in various fields of employment. The Promethean, on behalf of the Senior Class would like to thank Mr. Roberts for his outstanding services. SENIOR LETTER Dear Fellow Seniors, Well, we have finally come to the end of our road for a B.S. or B.A. degree. I can say very honestly, that we have made it!!! I congratulate us all. We have won, as W.E.B DuBois would say. “The Quest for the Silver Reece.” We have shown our family, friends, and even our enemies, that we have both the scholastica! and intellectual abilities to achieve. These abilities are two that no human being can ever take from us. Through our degrees, we shown people of other races that we have attained an education which will allow us to compete with any individual. We can best utilize our degrees by showing the other races that we are not inferior, but equal ready to stand up for what we believe in!!! In dosing, I would like to say: believe in yourselves, your God, and your people Treasure all the good memories we shared at our alma mater. Morgan State University So classmates, always try to do your best, at whatever you do and wherever you go. Scniorly, Loretta D. The 1981 Promethean is a very special edition to me, not only because it is my second and final production, but mainly for the love and hardwork of which it is indicative. The Promethean staff of 1981 displayed a great deal of tenacity, perseverencc, and the will to succeed in producing this yearbook Tenacity, perseverencc, and the will to succeed must be the characteristics that we all attain as students and as individuals. The saga of the Promethean staff can exemplify the outcome of these characteristics. We all know of the ineptness of our institution, in turn, we must all realize that this ineptiness invariably filters down to all facets of the university, the Promethean included. As you leaf through the pages of this book it is Imperative that you all understand the obstacles we faced, and surmounted. The job of compiling a yearbook is not an easy task in itself, and external problems make it more difficult, nevertheless, six individuals cared enough about each and every one of you reading this, and Morgan to present you with a great yearbook of great historical significance. Certain Individuals cared so much about this yearbook that they spent endless hours making sure this book became a realtiy. As a consequence of this fact 1 am compelled at this point to extend my undying love and gratitude to Iram Lawrence, my Associate Editor, and Bob Stevens, for without their strength and dedication this book would amass to nothing short of empty pages. The production of a yearbook is a major accomplishment, and if six Individuals can overcome a myriad of problems to insure a good yearbook, think of what students 4,000 strong can render to Morgan State University. It is easy to complain and ignore problems, but we must remember that problems are never ending and solutions are far reaching. It is my charge to each and every student to quit complaining and find solutions to Morgan’s problems. There is a saying that when the times get tough, the tough get going. BELIEVE IT!! Preserve our grand institution and let no one. persons, or things put us usunder. Long Live Morgan.
