PROMETHEAN 1978 Morgan state university BALTIMORE, MARYLAND KENNETH CLARKE. EDITOR-INCHIEF SONIA LIBURD. ASSISTANT EDITOR-IN-CHIEF PROF. BURNEY HOLLIS, ADVISOR (DIVERSITY VOLUME III c. Ai Sf n ?-7 f MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY BALTIMORE. MARYLAND 21239 Office Of THE PRESIDENT January 27, 1978 Dear Class of 1978: Congratulations upon the successful completion of your studies here at Morgan State University. We feel proud to have had the opportunity to study and work with you during what we hope have been rewarding years. You carry memories that shall remain with you and with those of us who have shared the joys and sorrows of association with you. You complete your work at Morgan State University as the nation enters the third century. A new President has challenged all Americans to share a new spirit, make a new commitment, and build a new America. The world of work is demanding skills, talents, and productivity for which your studies and experience at Morgan State University have given you a solid foundation. I urge you to build on that foundation in the years that lie ahead. I urge you to make your choices of graduate or professional study and to creatively pursue your personal goals. We at Morgan State University are confident that as you choose your niche in life, you will also recognize and assume your responsibility to improve the human condition. We regard this diploma as a symbol of that confidence. We know from your sharing in the life of the university community that you may be counted on to do your part in the wider community and to do it well. We feel that you leave us well equipped to help change things from the way they are to the way they ought to be. Your strides toward excellence as a student must be matched by your excellent performance in your chosen field as a mature responsible citizen. As you go forth to meet the challenges of tomorrow, I hope that you will reach back to help those who follow you at your Alma Mater. They need your help, interest and concern in order to realize their full potential. Again, congratulations and may the best be with you. lh 2 The staff of the 1978 Promethean would like to dedicate this volume to the memories of two Morgan faculty members who passed in 1977, Dr. James Haywood Harrison, professor of education and vice president for institutional planning, and Dr. Robert Collagan, professor of Science Educa- tion. Dr. Harrison, a Baltimore native, graduated from Dunbar High School with honors in 1949. In 1953 he received his bachelor’s degree from Morgan as a Magna Cum Laude graduate. One year later he earned his master’s degree from the University of Chicago, and in 1965 the Univer- sity of Maryland awarded him the degree of In a career which spanned 23 years. Dr. Harrison was Dean of S.A. Owen Junior College in Memphis; taught in the Baltimore public school system, and at Morgan advanced from instructor to chairman of the division of Social Science; chairman of the Department of Education, and finally to vice president of the university for institutional planning and development. He had also been a visiting professor at New York University and the Johns Hopkins University, and a visiting lecturer at the University of Maryland. He teas involved in many professional and community activities, and was instrumental in making Morgan radio station WEAA a reality. Professor Harrison was voted Distinguished Teacher of the Year by MSU students in 1964, 1977 Omega Psi Phi fraternity Man of the Year , and member of Dunbar High’s Hall of Fame, among his many other accomplishments as an educator, writer, and community leader. Dr. Harrison died of a heart attack in September 1977 at the age of 45. Dr. Collagan, a geophysicist who was head of the earth and planetary sciences departments at Morgan, was born in Quincy, Mass, forty-five years ago. The Professor matriculated at the University of Massachusetts for his bachelor s degree, obtained his master ’s degree at the ( niversity of Nevada, and received his doctorate at Catholic University in Washington. Just prior to his death. Dr. Collagan, an earthquake expert, had returned from a Jive-month study of earthquakes and volcanoes in the Pacific by means of a fellowship as a senior research professor at the University of the Phillipines, visiting China during the trip. During a 15-year tenure at Morgan, he wrote several books in his field of study. Dr. Collagan died in May, 1977, a heart attack victim while on a Florida vacation. Men of such distinction are irreplacable. but during their earthly existence they enriched the lives of those who came in contact with them and were a credit to themselves and the I:niversity they served. They will not soon be forgotten. liolxri H. Collagan mi- «77 James Haywood Harrison 1931-1977 Doctor of Education. 3 BOARD OF REGENTS DR. G. JAMES FI.EM ISC Chairperson DR. JACOB R. AGl'S MRS.
