HALL Associate Editor MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY — 977; place for people on the grow! As Morgan entered its second year as a univer- sity and its one hundred and ninth year as an institution, it moved into NEW DIMENSIONS of excellence and development. Fall 1976 witnessed Morgan s largest student body — a clientele strong not only in numbers, but also in academic preparation, scholarship and dedication to learning. Likewise with the faculty and adminis- tration new faces joined the veterans in an amplified effort at efficient, competent, com- passionate and committed service to the Univer- sity. the community and to learning. In its physi- cal facilities. Morgan was an expanding commu- nity: a new parking lot. new landscaping, and plans underway for major expansion. Everywhere there were signs of growth and development — WE A A (Morgan State University s radio station) made its debut. The Morgan Communication Center opened its doors. The President was inau- gurated. A Division of University Planning was established. Morgan got its first Board of Regents. The Morgan-GrambUng Classic was played abroad, for the first time in Japan. A Faculty-Staff Club was opened. Everywhere and every day. there were signs of Morgan s expansion into New Dimensions. Boginning with the hiring of Henry Lattimore from the Texas Southern coaching staff, one could see that resurgence was prominent in the mind of Morgan Athletic Director Earl Banks, who gave Lattimore the job. This is truo of nearly anyone new taking a head coaching position. Lattimore proved the worth of his selection by loading MSU to a 6-4 record, the first winning season here sinco 1973, and a share of the Mid Eastorn Athletic Conference grid title, with the South Carolina State Bulldogs holding the other half. It was the first MEAC title for the Bears since 1971, the conference's first year of existence. Both teams finished with 5-1 conference records. Also. Lattimore, along with Willie Jeffries of the Bulldogs, tied for MEAC coach of the year honors. One of the highlights of the Bears' season was their week-long odyssey to the Orient — Toyko. Japan — in September to play Grambling. It was the first regular season U.S. college football game to be playod beyond the wostern hemisphere. However, in the game itself, a 42 16 Bears loss, the most memorable occur- rence for Morgan was probably Duane Danner's 46-yard field goal; the kick tiod William Smith's 1973 school record for dis tance. Homecoming, by tradition a festive time, was made all the merrier due to a 29-point Morgan outburst in the second half en route to a 36-13 blitzkrieg of Delaware State, after having trailed 13-7 at the half. Quarterback Allen Rose had a hand in four of the five scores, running for two and passing for two. Ono of those was a 48 yardcr to Mark Durden and the other a 2-yarder to Larry Smiley. SEASON OF RESURGENCE Dofensively, Morgan held the Hornets to 101 yards in total offense. The Bears achieved their highest score in three years in this game. A week later, the Rose led Bears traveled to Greensboro, N.C.. to ravage A T in their Homecoming game by a 45 16 score. Rose hit on 14 of 25 passes for 214 yards and three touch- downs. all three going to Durden, who caught seven passes for 154 yards. Morgan had rolled up a 24-0 lead at halftime. Because of a relentless pass rush lod by Elvis Franks’ three quar- terback sacks, Ellsworth Turnor of tho Aggies was harassed into throwing two interceptions to linebacker Andre Wickham and one to cornerback Kevin Slade. The final score of 45 points wore the most since a 42-7 drubbing of Delawaro State in 1972. The Bears, in winning, supplanted A T for second place in MEAC standings with a 3-1 record, 4-2 overall, trailing S.C. State only. Rose and Franks, who made 18 tackles overall, won MEAC individual honors for their performances on their respec tive units. Throo weeks later (Nov. 20), Morgan was faced with a must- win situation against Howard in D.C.'s RFK Stadium, since S.C. State had finished their conference schedule with a 5 I mark to clinch at least a tie for the MEAC title alroady. In ordor for the Boars to gain that tie they had to win against the Bison and Maryland-Eastern Shore the following wock. After maintaining a slim 17-15 lead Morgan erupted for 17 fourth-quartor points for a decisive 34-15 victory over Howard. Donnell Coleman, relieving Roso (who had suffered a shoulder separation), unloaded a 55-yard strike to Durden for a touch- often converted near disasters on pass attempts. . . down on the final period's first play. Then, with 11:18 left, Dan ner kicked the longest field goal in Morgan history, a tromon dous 52-yard boot. A Coleman-to-Munford connection for 11 yards culminated the scoring spree. In this game Durden broke Ara Person's record for receiving yardage, finishing the contest with 787 soasonal yards compared to Person's 1969 total of 618. The season finale was a holocaust; the 8ears devastated UMES 56-10 for the MEAC championship tie. Coleman, starting for tho injured Rose, wont 17 for 27 for 194 yards and three TDs, and rushed for 60 yards. Durden broke Pearson's 1969 rocoption record in the second quarter and finished the season with 44. three better than the old standard, for 817 yards and seven touchdowns. into 2S yardgains like this. MORGAN A sign of the times, from Tokyo's Korakuon Stadium, site of the Morgan Grambling game. Joe Fowlkos established a new intorcoption record when he picked off his second pass of the game, his sixth in '76, and Slade and Wickham also mado interceptions. Eastern Shoro was held to 32 yards rushing and 101 yards passing. Moanwhile. four different receivers caught scoring passos from Coleman and Donald Beasley. Munford and Lloyd McCleave scored on runs. Mike Lyons' 25 yard return of a fum- bio in the first quarter opened all scoring. Not since 1970, when Morgen demolished UMES, then Maryland State. 55-0, had tho Bears run up so many points. Sometimes pocket passer Coleman took over. 71 Danner (13) booted a record 52-yard fiold goal in this game against Howard. Sometimes the hitting could be jarring. Munford raced for a record 576 yards last season. 72 Mounco Brooks 1491. Fowlkes (hand on Brooks' holme t). Slade (hands extondod) and Lon Stephenson: rough! Leroy Kelly did not really have a uper career at Morgan i State College, rushing for I 167 yards in four years, but the ability was always there. In his final game, tho 30-7 loss to Florida A M in the Orange Blossom Classic, ho was named most valuable player, an indication of things to come. Drafted by Cleveland in 1964 on the eighth round, Kelly, who was joined by ex-backfield and room mate Oliver Dobbins in the pros (Dobbins with the then AFL Buffalo Bills), spent his first y ar as a kick returner. In 1965, the last year of the Jim Brown era in Cleveland, Leroy's 16-yard punt average and two TDs on returns led the NFL. The next year, replacing the retired Brown, Kelly began to show the All-Pro brilliance that would result in 1141 yards in 1966, 1205 in 1967, and the career high of • 239 in 1968. In that same year he made his first appearance as a pro in Baltimore and mesmerized an NFL-leading Colt defense for 130 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-20 Browns win, becom- ing the only team to defeat the Colts in the regular season. He became the third-ever NFL rusher to gain 1000 yards in three different seasons that year and won his second con- secutive rushing title. Ho also led NFL scoring with 120 points (20 TDs). In 1970, in a game against Houston, he reached the 5000 yard pla- teau and became the leading active NFL rusher of that time. Kelly's star declined after the 81 I-yard 1972 sea- son, and in 1974 was put on waivers during preseason by the Browns, and, after a brief trial, the Oakland Raiders. He finished his playing days with the WFL's Chicago Fire that year. In ten NFL seasons Kelly amassed 7274 yards, making him the then number four alltime leading rusher, and 74 touch- downs (87 overall). He was last known to be coaching the back- field of the Philadelphia Bell of the WFL in 1975. WINNING IS A HABIT With or without Marvin Webster, Morgan State Univorsity proved to be a national basketball power to bo reckoned with while on route to a 22-6 record for tho 1975-6 season. Along the way they won a fourth consecutive Metro Tournament Champi- onship, tied North Carolina A T in the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference regular season standings for first place, rankod num- ber five in NCAA Division II, and made a third consecutive trip to tho NCAA Regional. Individual honors went to head coach Nat Frazier as MEAC Coach of the Year, senior Billy Newton, who was tho nation's leading free throw shooter, and sophomore Eric Evans, who made honorable mention as an All-Amorican. That’s not bad for a team which lost its most prolific scorer, reboundor, and two-time Associated Press Playor of the Year. Looking to tho sooson at hand, Eric (Scoobie) Evans is back after a season in which ho averaged 20.0 points and 13.2 robounds per game, as is Ivan Young, the lone senior (6.5 and 6.9) on this year's squad, his brother, Anthony (6.7 and 5.2), who moves into a starting slot, Maruice Jennings (7.6 and 2.9), and sophomore Darrell Davis. Evans, who moved into the vacatod spot left by Webster, made a name for himself with his long-rango jumpers while aver aging five blockod shots por game. I. Young continued to improve his reputation as a top defensive forward, usually draw ing the opponent's best big man. Anthony the younger has a fast, strong move to the hoop, somo say the best in the confer- ence; ho led Morgan in robounding for their last threo regular season games. Jennings, a junior, is a super puro shooter, maybo the best in Bear basketball history. Davis, a Louisiana product, camo on strongly on defense at the end of last year and gave a strong offensive performance. Frazier strengthened his toam with the signing of five blue chip recruits. Starting with two nowcomors from Alleghany Com- munity Collego in Pittsburgh, Richard Williams, a 6'2 guard from Philadelphia, and Harley Major, a Loabitsburg, Ohio native who stands at 6'7 and plays forward, the tag “can't miss is applied. Both led ACC, Boyce campus, to their first in the National Juco Championships. Duncan McGriff (6'2 ), from Pis- cataway, New Jersey, Curt Bond (6'4 ), from Newark. Now Jor soy, both whom play guard, and George Peterson (6'8 ), also from Newark, were also signed by Fraxior. Veteran bench depth exists in the form of junior Jerry Gannt, Jim Gorman (who ovon- tually won a guard spot from Davis), and Tim Frazier. The season began on a sour note in a fight riddled contest against Virginia Stato in Petersburg, a 105-83 Boars loss on Novembor 29. The Trojans wore lod by Doward Tisdol’s 32 points while Davis and Jennings banged in 20 apiece for the Bears. Evans and the Trojans' Loon Whito wore the main pugilistic attraction; Evans was ojected for his actions after having scored 17 points three minutes into tho second half. While still on the road, the Boars notched an 82-71 win over Elizaberh City the next night. In tho Metro Classic the Bears finally got their come uppancc in a big 83-69 upset win by Loyola College Decembor 3. Morgan hit a paltry 40 percent from tho floor, dospite Jennings' second half shooting spree to pull his personal point total up to 28, load ing all scorers. Tho Greyhounds, lod by Bob Reilly's 26 points, hit 51% of their field goals and 87% from the foul lino. Morgan finally won its second game in another tomper-flarod game, a 90-80 decision over Johns Hopkins in a Metro Tourney consolation contest tho following night. Jennings pumped in 28 again while Evans added 19. On the tournoy's final night the Bears stopped the Univorsity of Maryland Baltimore County 68 61. Jennings' 15 points gave him a 71 -point, three game total for a Classic rocord. His efforts won him a borth on tho All-Tourna ment team. A 46-point outburst by the 6-9 Evans on 18 field goals swept Morgan past C. W. Post 80-67 Decembor 10 in Morgan's Hill Field House. Scoobie had hit for 30 against Post tho yoar before. 76 The following evening Farleigh Dickinson beef the Beers 71 -64. but Morgen ceme beck two deys letor to eke out e 70-69 win over the Wolves of Choyney Stete. Lincoln would be the next victim tho following evening (80 64), end the lest until Jenuery 5. after finels end e Christmas break. The Bears won e 90 82 overtime win over Robert Morris. Evens led the esseult with 23 points but it wes Gennt who sperked Mor gan eftor replacing Scoobie, who hed fouled out with 8-plus min- utes left. A week leter (Jan. 12) against The University of Mary land-Eestern Shore Morgen recorded e seasonal (to date) 92 points. 42 FGs. and 60 rebounds, 22 of which belonged to Evens, who also registered 18 FGs among his 39 points to help beat the Hawks by 18. This was the first conference game of the season. Howard was not as easy to handle, as the Boars found themselves Back from the University of Wisconsin after a semester-tong stay. Gor- man gained a starting spot. behind midway through the first half before fighting back to grab a 40-38 lead when the intermission buzzer rang. Then Evans, who had scored only two first half points, turned torrid as Mor- gan pushed the score to 76 68 with 2:32 left. The Bison clawed their way to within two in 1:29 but the Bears prevailed to win, 78 74. Evans and Jennings combined for 45 points in a losing effort two days later (Jan. 17; 75-72) in the Lincoln rematch. Scoobie from the top of the key against C. VV. Post. Anthony Young penetrates for two. Due io deadlines which had to bo mot, the story of the 1976 7 basketball season must end horo. At this point in tho season Morgan owned an 8-4 record with I I games to play in tho regu- lar season and a 3-0 MEAC rocord. The dunk is back! 7 8 Front Row (kneeling): Jim Gorman. Duncan McGri(f. What more can you say about a man who has played in more games (I 16), made more field goals (783), shot for a higher per- centage (52%), scored more points (1990), and snared more rebounds (2267) than anyone in Morgan basketball history over a four year period? Marvin Webster was one of the most horaldod hoopstors in modorn collogo basketball when he was drafted number one by both the NBA Atlanta Hawks and the then ABA Denver Nug- gets, with whom he signed. A liver ailment cost him most of his rookie year but by the time the 1976-77 soason rolled around he had recovered almost completely and was slowly being workod into more playing time until he would be able to play a full 48 minutes. Marvin, as a freshman, made the All-MEAC team at center on the strength of 16.1 rebounds per game and a 13.1 scoring aver- age. He would koep this all-conference status for the remainder of his collegiate career. In 1972 he won Eastern Collogiato Ath- letic Conference honors, the first of three All-EC AC selections for the seven-footer. Then came the golden year of 1973-74. It was in that season when Webster began to gain national notoriety. His 21.4 ppg average and 22.4 rebounds per game helped lead the Bears to a 28-5 record and tho NCAA Division II national championship. In a game against South Carolina State, with two 6'9 opponents guarding him. the Eraser scored 39 points, the fourth highest single game total in MSU history, and grabbed 32 rebounds while leading the Bears to victory. Wobstor achiovod tho All- American plateau and the Associated Press Player of the Year Award (Collogo Division) for his effort. With one year of eligibility left, Philadelphia of the NBA drafted him on the first round of the league's hardship draft. Webster contracted hopatitis in the summer of 1974, which put excess pounds on his normally lean frame. When tho soason started Wobster had not shook off the effects of his illness and it showed in his play. At 235 pounds, ten over his norm, his mobility and fluidity, uncommon to most big men and his greatest assests, were not the same. It showed in his stats, too. 15 points and 17 robounds a game were sub-par Webster numbers. Yet, his 56% field goal percentage was his highost ever at Morgan. Nonethe- less, under the adverse physical conditions, Marvin maintained his All-American spot and gained another AP Player of the Year trophy. The Eraser had a good jump shot and could make a hook shot with either hand, but was most renown for his defense. He aver agod eight blocked shots a game while at Morgan. It is felt that he may develop into a Bill Russell type with a higher offensive output. If he is able to regain his college form as a pro Marvin Webster will no doubt become the NBA's next great center. 80 P'rst Row (kneeling): Inga Blunt. Michelle Rodgers. Cheryl Mackle, Pam Powell. THE LADIES PLA Y TOO Under new head coach Darlene Emerson the women’s basket- ball team boasted a 7-3 record (as of Feb. 4) and had a 3-0 MEAC record. F ive main reasons for that success are accredited o guards Inga Blunt and Michelle Rodgers, and forwards Cynt- hia Smith, Alecia Smith (the team's top rebounders — averaging 10-15 rebounds per game), and Karen Brown (women's basket- ball employs a 3-forward system). We have a chance to go to the MEAC tourney if we continue to do well, Emerson said. If Successful there, the Bear-ottos could progress to tho Maryland Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women tournament. 81 Front: Coach Jamos Phillips: Front Row: Nasser Massoudi Roy Griffin. A STRUGGLE FOR RECOGNITION Morgan' wrestling team at the moment (Feb. 3) lacks the sta- tus of being well known but recognition is not far from Jim Phil- lips' chargos if they continue at their present pace. At this date the Bear grapplers were 9 5 overall, with a 3-0 MEAC record. Among the conquosts were a 55 0 drubbing of Goorge Wash ington, and decisions over conference rivals Howard (42-3), South Carolina State (29 6), and Delaware State (32 17). This toam's young and good. The competition has been tough but has been instrumental to the team's progress, Phillips said. Morgan need only beat North Carolina Central and North Carolina A T for tho rights to tho top sood in the MEAC tour- ney. and to have beaten every conference opponent. TRA VELING ON COMEBACK ROAD Words of optimism flowod frooly from Sholdon Freed as he talked of the prospects for his band of stickmon in 1977. I ©xpoct tremondous improvement from last year (Morgan went 3 I I in 1976); tho veterans are up front in leadership, something I m proud of, ho said. Another big, Frood pointed out, has been tho support Ath letic Director Earl Banks, head football coach Hank Lattimore nd his assistants, and football scout Howard Wilson have given the program. Football players are froo to play lacrosse like they havon't for several years. Othor than All-American midfielder Joseph Fowlkes. After sit t,n9 out last year. Jerna Jacques (midfield) returns for a third reason. Dofensoman Bill McAllen, who holpod Jacques and Freed load Grasmick Lacrosse Club to the Mulbury Division of Club Lacrosso championship, is a nowcomer. Rodney Early has already been deemed a potential All-American defenseman, and Jason Green, who played for Morgan in 1974 5. are the most experienced among a group of six who vie for three attack men positions. A battle for goalkeeper exists botween two freshmen, George Gummer, the most experienced at the position, from Maryland Scholastic Association lacrosso champion Calvert Hall High, and Mike McBride, whom Frood feels is the better athlete. Mike Car- rington, last year's unsung hero who played lacrosse for the first timo in 1976, took over at goalie when Tom Albany, no longer at Morgan was injured in a car accident late in the season. He is a man without a permanent position; he can play them all fairly well. 83 Puddio'' Jones: goalward bound against Adelphi. Fowlkes and an Adelphi opponent battle for possession. TODAY'S HERO All-American in Lacrosse — All-MEAC in Football SOPHOMORE MIDFIELDER JOE FOWLKES Joe Fowlkes was an unknown who had played on the second midfield in 1975 when the lacrosse season of 1976 began. Sixty- one goals and 14 games later he had made first team All-Ameri- can at midfield on the Sportswriters poll and honorable mention on the U.S. Intercollegiate All-American team. His 61 goals were the second highest total in both Division I and II; his five-points per game avorage (combined goals and assists) ranked 13th nationally; in Division II he ranked 4th in goals scored per gamo (4.1). Fowlkes had finished his season first in total scoring in both NCAA divisions but was surpassed by players who would eventually play more games than ho. Last season's performance, which included a nine goal effort against Georgetown, makes Fowlkes expoct oven better things for 1977. I have more to live up to, ho says. I have to practice harder to do hotter. Last year I didn't have anyone to pass to but now there's a surplus of talent and players.” This new-found notoriety has made him a markod man in lacrosse circles. Becauso of what I did last year people will be trying to show me up. I think that thoy will have to gring the game to me; thon I can play my own gamo. I don't have anything to prove to mysolf this yoar as I did last year, but I have to con tinuo to be consistent. Fowlkes feels that with his leadership, skill, and knowledge of the game, along with the team's ambition to be the best, Mor- gan will be in for a hell of a season. UP AND COMING It it the fooling of Margaret Barton, director of women's ath l tict and head volleyball coach, that tho tport will catch on and grow at Morgan and that studonts will enjoy watching tho game more as well as playing it. The telecasting of volleyball in the Olympics has helped its exposure.” Barton said. Student inter ® t in the sport at Morgan will help it grow in importance. It's very popular on the varsity level with women. Many black schools have varsity volleyball programs for women. Increasing the program's progress at Morgan is partly a finan cial matter. Financial support is definitely needed for a top flight varsity program for women; at the samo time student sup Port is a MUST. We often do more criticixing of our own than we give support. We ask for support instead of constant criticism. Ms. Barton commented. First Row (knotting): Paulette Clagon Paula Clagon. Tanya Bryant: Second Row (standing): Tina Moplos. Nicole Banks. RESEEKING PROMINENCE Last season the women's track team went all the way to the national championships for women (undor American Intercollegi ate Athletics for Women), placing second in the AIAW with a squad of three freshmon (Paula and Paulotte Clagon. Lisa Batch), and one sophomore (Yvette Coleman). All except Batch are back and are joined by promising first-year runners such as Natalie Adams. Merleno Smith, Tanya Bryant, and Tina Maples. Bryant has replaced Batch on the 440 team, having become a starter for the indoor season. In light of recruiting costs, and attempts to field a men's team, women's track may be able to give back to Morgan the track reputation it once had sooner than tho mon, said onetime men's track superstar from the 1960s Nick Lee, now head coach of the track program. The feeling oxists that the program will reach oven groater heights when a few other minimum itoms aro added, such as pole vault and high jump pits, otc. The women's 440 relay team set a notional AIAW record in the mile relay (3:48). and 440 relay (47:6). and Paula Clagon ran the 440 dash in a record 55.5 m the Maryland Invitational Classic at College Park. Lee, who has to commuto to and from Washington, D.C. to another job daily, said that former Morgan and MEAC cham- pion hurdler Maurice Raoford, now a student assistant, had boon instrumental in maintaining a practico schedule and keeping the team together during the times when Lee couldn’t make it out to Morgan because of his other job. Tho men's track team, in Lee's words, demonstrated that this phase of Morgan track was still alive. Wo impressed a lot of poo pie and showed a lot of esprit do corps. Lacking outstanding ♦alont, the team finished third in MEAC standings with maximum determination. Strong suits for both squads should be tho mon's mile relay, and the women’s 440 and 880 relays, collectively as well as individually. YESTERDA Y'S HERO A I960's Morgan Track Immortal NICK LEE The name brings back magic memories of a time in which Mor- gan was dominating national track power Nick Lee was a Mor- gan track superstar; among his many accomplishments were the setting of a world's record in the 400-meter hurdles and boing a member of tho NCAA champion mile relay team during the 1960s. He also ran on several international teams. Nick came back on tho MSU track scene March I, 1976, ten yoars after his graduation, to take on the title of unoffical track coach. It is a voluntary job that he accepted due to a per- sonal appeal by both the track team and Athletic Director Earl Banks. At the time he held the job of Director of Federal Rela tions and Special Gifts. Now he is on ployed in Washington, D.C. and has to commute to and from D.C.. making it impossible to come to daily practico sessions regularly. Becauso of this he feels le may have to give up the coaching position. 99 The articulate Morgan grad practiced his team hard and dis- ciplined them strictly. The hard work rosultod in new school records in the 440 relay by the men (40.7) and in the mile relay by the women (3:48). which is a national record also. Lee is concerned about roturning the track program to national prominence. He sees room for improvement within an already progressing program. Ho also likes the type of atmos- phere in which high schoolers would want to attain an education in and also participate in athletics. I don't see any monetary advancement in the job at this point, Lee said in a 1976 interview concerning his future pro gression,, but somebody has to do it. It has been a roal good experience, something I always thought about doing, and which needod to be done. Lee (with hand being relied) after he won another tract ovont. in 1966. Mile Hartridgo. Jeff Norman: Not Pictured: Francino Saunders Greg Smith. Gymnastics, in its socond season at MSU, is making fantastic improvement, according to coach Jo An Cummings, from last season. The 1976-77 soason is the first one for Morgan in rogard to actual competition against other schools. The competition includes Towson State, Georgetown, Gaulludet, and Catholic University, all from the Eastern District of NCAA gymnastics of which Morgan is a member. Tho national champions have come from this district; in essence, the opposition is very tough. None theloss tho program, according to Cummings has progressed 100% in a year's time. At the time of this writing (Fob. 4), the team was involved in the Metro Invitational Tournament (Washington, D.C.) and the Maryland Open Moet against tho above opponents. In speaking of the ladies, Shoila Plummer, Leslie Thomas, and Hilda Francis are all around, or work tho uneven parallel bars, vaulting and bal- ance beams, and the floor oxorciso (a routine done on a 40 X 40 area con- sisting of tumbling and controlled stunts). Francine Saunders does floor and beam exorcises, and Juanita Pur- nell works from the trampoline. As for the men, Mike Hartridge does the sidehorse and rings; John Jackson does the rings as well as vault- ing and floor; Bruce Kerk does vault ing, parallel bars, floor; Joo Moore is the mon's all-around performer — rings, floor, side horse, parallel bars, high bar , vaulting, and trampoline — a i Clyde Winston who doesn't do tho sido horse. Kevin Jordon (who didn't return to school in January) did the rings, vaulting, and sidehorse. Greg Smith performs floor and vaulting manuovers. Whatever lies in Morgan's gymnastic future will depend on recruitment returns, but Cummings says that people all over the country are interested in attending MSU, the first and only Black gymnastic school in the Eastern District. rv J. Purnell works on trampoline. S. Plummer practices on min! beam. 91 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS 92 NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Racquetball Is a new club sport and now to Morgan, one that catches on quickly. Morgan belongs to the Maryland Raquetball League, along with tho Towson YMCA, Aberdeen White Mash. Eastern, and the Jewish Commu- nity Center. It is said to be an easy game to learn but hard to master. The Ideal champion- ship player is described as ono who is calm, cool, hard-playing, and determined. A match in raquetball consists of six singlos matchos and three doubles matches. The team looks forward to a bright winning future. Tho playors at Morgan have become more serious about their performances and improving thomsolvos; the enthusiasm and desire is there, said Margaret Barton, women athletic director and a strong advocato of Raquetball. Secretary COLD SPRING LANE AND HILLEN ROAD BALTIMORE, MARYLAND 21218 To The Class of '77 I have enjoyed my term as your president this year. It was quite rewarding in many ways, some expected and cherished, some unexpected and chalked up for experience. I've learned many lessons from Morgan I hope we all have. Let those experiences at school and of the past guide you through Life. Remember that Morgan is only a microscopic sample of what the Outside World is like. But now your days of missing classes and profiling are over. You must enter our society as full fledged members with degrees in your various disciplines. Carry yourselves in the best way possible to exist in this world bequeathed to us by our elders. Although it is a cruel world full of injustices, we must not let ourselves become one of the many who've passed before us and made it so. I know that you or I can't change it in a day I just do your best-to help others in need. So into the world we go, full of ideals and misconceptions about Life. Remember that you have a double duty to perform. You must strive forward, making your own way in the world, upholding the decision which gave you your degree but not only for yourselfJ you must also make a channel for those Morgan graduates who follow. Such is your mission to yourself, to Morgan and to your people. November is the month of the founding of this institution by a small band of dedicated Methodists in 1867. It also marks the com- memoration of Maryland Emancipation Day. started in November. 1867, by that most distinguished Marylander, tho other Hopkins, Nathaniel Hopkins, born a slave in Maryland, who, . . . inaugurated this day as an annual ovont of feasting and prayer. Wo come to this occasion also in the autumn of tho year, the Thanksgiving season, when all of naturo sooms caught up in the simulta- neous celebration of tho harvest, of its past, and the redodication to the long winter which lies ahead. And thus we aro reminded that the harvest or challenges facing us aro indeed plentiful, even though tho laborers and the resources to develop that harvest aro all too few. The University Mae , carried by Chiof Marshall, Dr. Clayton C. Stansbury. President Billingsley flankod by Mayor WiUiem D. Schaefer and Lieutenant Gov- ernor Blair Lee and Student Government President John Calhoun. 240 AND REMINDERS OF OUR MISSION I i kiiM (1948 1970): Or. Thorn Fratar (1970 71. 1974 75); and Dr. KIrvg V. Chook (1971 74). logo, and Towion Stata Univar ity. Tho Univ«r ity' Board of Rogant . . . Each of thoso man (formor presidents of Morgan) has articulated the essential mission of Morgan State University. It is an institu tion dedicated to Black Americans, opon at anytime to any student, whatever his raco, creed or national origin, who is able to benefit from its programs. It is an institution devoted to tho highest standards of scholarship and ever sonsitivo to the special noods of the community which surrounds it. — Androw Billingsley COMMITMENT W at Morgan understand that a commitment to excellence Is not only a commitment In the conventional sense to high quellty teach- ing and research, but also and more importantly It means an Irrevocable commitment to move forward the cause of human dignity; a commitment to the uplift of the poor, the dispossessed, the disfranchised and the downtrodden; a commitment to the creation and maintenance of an environment that nurtures the growth of moral and ethical values; a commitment, in general, to the improvement of life. We charge you to raise high the banner of human dignity over Morgan so that all who see it may know who we are and what we are about, and might be guided by our example. Bo assured that you will have our unswerving support as we stride together towards excel- lence. Dr. Horace A. Judson Vice-President for Academic Affairs . . to Excellence . . . Thoroforo, we regard MSU as something more than an ordinary institution of highor learning. For all of us in the National Alumni Association of MSU, it is a charge to keep, a purposo to fulfill, a goal to pursue, and a legacy to preserve. — William R Martin, President National Alumni Association . . . The staff has made a commitment as you bocome the eighth president of this institution ... to strive to improve tho quality and quantity of work along with promoting unity, cooperation, understanding, and abovo all rospoct for oach other. 'He who is virtuous is wise; ho who is wise is good; he who is good is happy’. — Ms. Christino Sweat, Representative Maryland Classified Employoos Association . . . By his direction we have geared oursolves toward excellence and have begun to stride along with him. — Johnny Calhoun. President Morgan Student Government Association. Even while the genius of Black Americans is generally recognized, and even as we exemplify in our daily work tho mannor in which individuals and groups continue to excell . . . the sad fact is that in the larger community this genius and the enormous contribution it can make to the world go largely unrecognized, unrewarded, commercially exploited, inadequately honored and preserved and infrequently studied. . . Yet even as we maintain our primary commitment to the education of Black Americans, even as we expand our openness and receptivity to persons of all races, creeds, and colors, we seek to become a university, second to none, both despite and because of our particular cultural heritage. We seek to transcond tho limitations of tho past oven as wo use the past as an anchor from which to oxploro tho limitless possibilities of the future . . . In ordor to make this contribution to this state and the nation, wo shall havo to havo at Morgan expanded facilities, faculty and other resources requirod to do tho job. Just as wo cannot make brick without straw, we cortainly cannot train blacks without the necessary laboratories, faculty and cooperation from other institutions.” 244 MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY BALTIMORE MARYLAND 21239 ornct or the prcsiOent February 7, 1977 To the Class of 1977: Congratulations! You have now reached the end of your undergraduate careers. I am sure, as you look back, you have many pleasant memories — many rich experiences — many frustrations — many disappointments. We have endeavored to help you prepare yourselves for worthwhile choices of future careers and more enriched lives. Our efforts will be assessed as we observe the progress you have made in the years ahead. Those of us who remain at Morgan State University will watch you with high hopes. There are no limits to your attainments; the goals you reach depend on your own abilities and determination. You will make all of us proud as you live up to the Spirit of Kunta Kinte. Do come back and visit us from time to time and make every effort to participate in alumni activities. Shower us with news of your accom- plishments so that others may know of things in which you have excelled. Yours for a greater, more dynamic Morgan State University as we strive toward excellence. On January 10. 1977, WEAA 88.9 F.M. began broadcasting from Holmes Hall on the campus of Morgan State University. Actual construction of the station was begun by the University Maintenance Department in June, 1976. Rooms 200, 202, 204, and 206 were renovated for sound proofing. New equipment replaced the old equipment that was used for a speech lab. WEAA is striving for positive direction. Its studio will be used as a field lab for students and the M.S.U. community. I would liko to thank my Associate Editors and staff who lent a helping hand. As usual, everyone has been slack at timos, but who would expect otherwise at Morgan. Most of all, I would like to give my special thanks to Prof. Burnoy Hollis. Without his technical and creativo ideas, wo would not have been able to meet mony of our deadlines. So, congratulations all graduating seniors in your continual strife toward excellence and havo good reminiscing with your yoarbook. Love, unity, and pride Avon W. Chesterfield Co Editor-in Chief Greetings, I would like to address this letter to the students, faculty, administration, and especially the critics. In planning this yearbook and entitling it New Dimensions. we doterminod that this year's book should represent and depict the activities of the entire Morgan State University student body, because this is the purpose of the Promethean — Yearbook. This is not exclusively a book for Seniors, although they are required to purchase tho book when graduation fees are paid. Therefore, much time and effort woro placod in preparing the first sixty fivo pages of tho book. However, this doos not moan it is the best section, only that the theme of the book is centered around the beginning Now Dimensions.” So, I would like to give extremo thanks and gratitude to the associate editors and staff who holpod complete this publication and make New Dimensions a reality. A final word addressod to the critics (pro and con): boforo you make your comments ask yourself, What did I do to make New Dimensions a reality, and then if you still havo complaints make it a priority to stop by the Promethean — Yearbook next year and volunteer your services and idoas.
