“
MORGAN The red sphere spills burnished reflections and masked memories down upon my head — seeing you now when the young day yawns, its brisk breath urging the senses to grasp the nascent succulence of spring brings a fervered appreciation of beginnings — the roots of life. nere? i began like a wide-eyed doe dancing through greenbrown thicket thrilling to intimations of power-to-come, like a brazen eaglet vibrant with vigor at the prospect of spanning the skies . . . i, passing daily through your corridors littered with dreams-deferred w'as filled w ith visions of victory over those that ruled us with disquieting hands . others here, moved with a slick dip step kept quick with fuel from their jet ambitions and i was not alone. . . together, we ponder the puzzles of our domination dancing flaming juba-jigs ever the lush green (prior scene of pious impotence) But a side-long glance at Douglass, per- petually presiding ever all, told us intimately that our fires were not the first, and while they burned on — they burned cautiously coaled by wisdom inspired at imminent con frontation . . . for we must leave you, forsaking forever a fortress against the ills of being the sudden hurt i feel piercing the soul i see deep in the eyes of my brothers. but i am not afraid . . . and as i go forth to issue the challenge inevitable i will mourn the dying of a precious something, never reborn . . Founded at Cornell University in 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha is the oldest of the predomi- nantly Black fraternities. Since its beginning as a social study club, it has always pursued goals beyond the narrow social realm. Manly deeds, scholarship and love for all man- kind — words from the national hymn — appropriately sum up its basic goals, the fulfill- ment of which is sought in various social-action activities. Since its establishment with seven men, this service-focused body of college-trained men has grown to exceed 45,000. There are 227 college and 337 graduate or alumni chap- ters throughout the U.S. and in Bermuda, England, Liberia, South Korea, South Vietnam, Virgin Islands, and West Germany. In 1941, Alpha Phi Alpha became the first fraternity to drop its racial membership restrictions. Thus, today it is interracial as well as interna- tional. Among the fraternity's nationally known members are Supreme Court Associate justice Thurgood Marshall and Senator Edward W. Brooke. The late Dr. Martin Luther King, jr. was also an Alpha man. 159 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard Univer- sity on january 23,1913 and is the oldest col- lege sorority founded by Black Women. The Bears took a “giant step in that direction last season, “winning all the marbles — the NCAA College Division championship finished with a 28 and 5 record and the top ranking team in the nation among small colleges. Frazier was named Associated Press College Divi- sion “Coach of the Year and Marvin the Human Eraser Webster was named Player of the Year for a clean sweep of basketball honors in 1974. The Bears were ready this year to match their previous record which would enable them to compete in the NIT at Madison Square Garden. Besieged with problems from the onset of the season, they ended the season with an 18 win 8 loss record, two of which were for- feited. Withstanding pressure placed upon the team, Frazier and the Bears maintained their quality of ball playing throughout the season. Standing, (L-R): Head Coach Flan Couch, Donnie Tyus, Eric CoucE Steven McCray, Basil Williams, Lawrence Cousins, Joe Smith, Paris McGee, Coach Larry Phillips, Coach Lennie Scott. The Bears go into the 1975 season with great deal of optimism. The great strength of the '75 Club will be its depth, nc only in Pitching, but in Hitting and all positions. The Bears will be strong on all front lines as well, and this may be the Bear best baseball team ever, if only the weather would favor them a little more. Catching — Eric Deke Couch, very strong catcher with an excellent throwing arm and a very potent bat which is capabl of breaking any game open anytime. Can be awesome. Deke has a very good knowledge of the game. Could be great. Pitching — Very strong in this department. Richard Donnie Tyus, Captain of the Bears, has a very strong arm, very good control and a good fast ball and curve. H has a super attitude for the game, also plays 3rd base. Darrold Wilson, The hard throwing right hander probably has more experience than any other Pitcher on the squad, Dai rold has an assortment of pitches, a blazing fast ball, slider, curve, off speed pitch, plus his knowledge of the game, and a excellent attitude for the game. Clift Marshall, The control pitcher of the Bears. Will probably be a great surprise to all of the coaches. He too, has a assortment of pitches. Clift's advantage is he keeps the ball low. Victor Ward, is a curve ball specialist with a heart of a lion. Can be effective on any given day. Walter Butch Cooke, a flame thrower who needs a great deal of work because of his 2 years in the Army. Joseph Smith, also needs a great deal of work because he too was in the service, but is showing great promise. Infield — Parris McGhee, hard hitting veteran who led the Bears in hitting last year at a .362 clip. Can be devastating. Wayne Green, returning veteran with a good glove and bat. A little more game concentration would be the cure for all his ills. Basil Mr. Smooth Williams, a freshman from the Virgin Islands is really a candidate for the starting job at first base, M Smooth has a good glove, smooth swing and a knowledge of the game. Outfield — Larry Flaky Cousins, a very good fielder with a strong accurate arm and a very potent bat. Capable of being th home run king on the team. Reggie Springfield, returning veteran can be great in centerfield if he concentrated, has very good throwing arm and re speed on the base path. However, sports for women are an important part of Extracurricular Athletics at M.S.C. The major woman athletic teams at the college are: Volleyball team which has been in exist- ence since 1964 and which in recent years has developed into a fairly good one. The Basketball team which gets better every year; the Track team which, under the training of Coach Thomas, has developed the talents on the participants; and, Gymnastics which since its first year in com- petition, 1974, has faired quite well; and whose members are looking forward to further chances to compete. These women's teams are not as yet as victorious as the more powerful men's teams, but they are continuing their development and are offering many of athletically inclined women to develop their various talents and to compete on an intercollegiate level. 199 If unique is what you seek, the field of chemistry holds the key. I feel that chemistry is the most basic foundation underlying this age of synthetics in which we live. Its appli- cation is evident in all things we see. Therefore, it offers a challenge with unlimited boundaries and opportunities. It can take on the air of a theoretical investigation concern- ing all aspects of life or the structured approach of a scien- tific discipline. The individual is allowed and encouraged to lend his own personality. Mitch A. Willis Chemistry Senior Through scientific reasoning and experiment, the Biol ogy Department has enabled me to expand my concepts o life. Animals and plants are very complex species. Their ori gin, function and well being are somewhat similar. The require many of the same nutrients; and their cellula mechanism are similar. I enjoy working in the sciences an« hope to be as asset to the continuance of mankind. Charles White Owl Hughes Biology Major Senior 202 l-L t “There are two categories into which a subject falls. Fitting between the two are strong politi- cal participation and economic stability. It seems each generation must pass this banner on to the next generation for fulfillment. I hope the banner need not be passed on with the passing of our generation. Milton Jones Political Science Senior 203 Because I believe that the learning process should not be enclosed in a vacuum, I feel that the Speech Department here at Morgan State College affords stu- dents the opportunity to learn in an academic atmos- phere which will carry them in their prospective endeavors. Michele Mimi Bland Speech Department Senior Through study in the English Department I was able to analyze several Major literary works of the world. This analysis has led to the better understanding of the div- erse social forces which influence the contemporary setting. Kenneth Goodrich Sociology is the science of the origin and evolu- tion of society, or of the forms, institutions, and functions of human groups. At Morgan, the department is semi-functional and is an under- developed representation of the teachings which should prepare one for research in this prog- ressive and ever-changing world. I hope that those who come after me will be able to learn from a department which should have advanced itself adequately to deal with the minds of the students who will pass through the doors in the years to come. Reesa Motely 206 “The Foreign Language Department at Morgan is one hat enhances an individual's capacity to learn and develop he necessary and adequate skills that subscribe to effi- ient verbal communication in non-native languages. My several encounters with natives of Africa, France, Germany and Spain have given me a chance to utilize my alents which were magnified by the professors of Foreign Languages here at Morgan. Thus, as a result of the department's efficiency, it has been able to well accomplish its goal; that is, to prepare its students to be able to converse efficiently and master per- tinent information simultaneously.
