T i i-C_ 3kasi M. 5 A«rFf POWER and KNOWLEDGE Through knowledge, there is power, and through power, there is prog- ress. 2 Power and Knowledge 3 4 Power n«l Knowledge To have power and to survive. Black must be cognizant of opposition, ready for revolution and in love with people ... if it is to survive. And we must heal long-inflicted wounds, if we are to seize the time and express the histories of our Af- rican blood, the poetry of our lan- guage. the rhythm of our pride, and the lyricism of our love for one an- other. Black must be the expression of our knowledge: The elegance of our colour. The aesthetics of our culture, and the wrath of our past. Power and Knowlrdp- 5 • j1|l.l|Vl HI J |I«IP 9 Through knowledge, power will be seized. The people will In- ready lo build empires and faith in themselves and to inspire indestructible leaders, while learning from past mistakes and living for life (and for brothers King and Malcolm). • Power an i Know Iwljjr And remembering . . . Black is more than wearing a dashiki or a teased Afro, or giving the ‘right on' sign passing a brother. Black is more than reading Newton and Seale and supporting Angela Davis without ever really knowing their causes and having red, black and green as your favorite colors And just wearing prescription sun glasses and a hush jacket during the day and plaiting your kinks at night Power and Knowledge 9 And jusl saying tilings like: kill the pig” and liberate the brothers from tin faeist state and knowing when to say imperialism instead of nationalism . . . And just spelling America A-M-E-R-I-K-K-K-A and wearing Huey Newton's profile pinned on your chest don’t make us revolutionists . . . nor do they make Us Black. Only by knowing what Black is and by feeling that which we know Black is can we BE Black. The ad- ministrative staff is the vital link which coordinates ac- tivities with faculty and students. It also links the college and the community. In its capacity as a link bctwiren Morgan and the community, it serves a very important function to the senior class. While the faculty prcjwrcs the students mentally for the world, the administrative staff provides the ground work for a smooth transition from the world of academics to the world of aclualitv. Presidents During Our Era Past and President Morgan State College recently lost an outstanding and distin- guished president. Dr. Martin David Jenkins. As president of Morgan State since 1948. he sought to bring Morgan into a program oriented towards contin- uous expansion and improve- ment. Dr. Jenkins, upon entering of- fice 22 years ago, took charge of the Morgan community, then val- ued at 1.4 million dollars. At the time he resigned, Morgan State had a value of more than 14.4 million dollars. Indeed Dr. Jenk- ins’ most important proposal of his career was his recommenda- tion that Morgan become ’a ra- cially integrated, urban-oriented university.” 16 Presidents Dr. King V. Cheek Begins His Term in Office MOROAN STATE COLLEOE • lTiMO e. R l IO ■ or or •«• « June 1. 1971 To the Graduating Seniors: For several years, you have been activo participants in a vital educational process. Your lives and the world’s luture depend upon the wisdom, understanding and knowledge you have acquired. The era in which we now live is indeed turbulent and challenging. The rapidity of change creates anxlctlos which test man’s capacity to survive. Although we have walked on the moon, we still walk with fear and uncertainty upon the earth. History has taught us that the strength of a nation does not depend upon its technological achievements or the sire of its arsenal but upon the quality of the people who populate It. It Is with this understanding that the doquenco and meaning of the old Chinese proverb Is recalled. “If you plan for one year, plant rice; for ten years, plant trees; for hundreds of years, educate men. You are now called upon to assess Intelligently your role In the decades and century ahead. We hope your llvos will not be devotod ex- clusively to self-serving interests. We pray you will seek to be active chango agents in a world whose priorities must be reordered to promote a bettor life among men. Congratulations for all of your achievements and best wishes for a future of service. Sincerely, Klng V. Cheek President English and Speech The department of English and Speech offers two major programs leading to the A.B. degree: the major in English and the major in Eng- lish-Speech, each designed to meet the specific needs of particular stu- dents. Captain Marshall Lewis is leading our team this year and has proved to be capable. He is one of the leading scorers on the team and one of, if not the best, ball han- dlers. Other members of Morgan's 1970-71 Basketball Team are soph- omores Bernard B.rundidge and Chet Davis, who have developed into men who will give anyone com- petition on the court. In the past Morgan has had trouble at center but this year, sec- ond year man Phil Pugh is manning that position and is doing a great job. Nathaniel Garrett, a junior, seems to be having a fine year also. Richard Houston, Anthony Coach Wilson Huggins, Robert Rooks and LaSalle Reynolds make up the remainder of the base of Morgan's Varsity team this year. This team has more depth than Morgan has had on the Basketball court in the last few years. If you watch these Morganites playing, you will see that they fight to the last second of the game, and their record will speak for itself. These teams compete against other schools in field hockey, basketball and softball- Although their records are not outstanding, they have developed a tradition of never giving up until the contest is over. These girls practice hard and play in competition even harder. They play mostly schools inside Maryland and have developed a name of being a threat to even the mightiest teams in this state. Dr. Payne coaches most of the sports, and she and her players are very dedicated to being as good as possible. When they lose, they work hard to get rid of their mistakes, and, when they win, they work just as hard to improve themselves. COACH DR. Mitchell, Democratic Candidate for the United States Senate, spoke to Morgan’s evening school students, October 14, 1970, in the Student Union Lounge. Mr. Reginald Thomas, treasurer of the Evening Student Council, opened the assembly of about a hundred students, faculty and friends. Mr. Mitchell was introduced by Miss Paula Meekling as a graduate of Morgan, professor of Sociology, first Black student to enter and graduate from the University of Maryland Graduate School and the first Black candidate of Maryland for the U.S. Senate. Mr. Mitchell begpn by labeling himself as a radical, liberal activist but said he would not pursue that issue. The speech, entitled Dissent, Progress and Decision,” dealt with the poor Blacks of America, the war in S.E. Asia, over-reaction to quiet dissent and Black people allowing the system to erode. Mr. Mitchell closed his speech by stating that it is Black peoples duty to right the system. He quoted from the Greek philosopher, Katzinzacbees, Reach into your racial origin to reach compassion, daring and progress.” Mrs. Beryl W. Williams, director of the evening division, closed the assembly with the introduction of the faculty and staff of the Evening School. WHAT IS DRUG ABUSE0 Drug abuse, because it takes many forms and involves many different kinds of substances, is not an easy term to define. In one instance, drug abuse refers to the consumption, without medical authorization, of medically useful drugs which have the capacity for altering mood and behavior. A truck driver who takes a stimulant to maintain wakefulness is abusing drugs. A student who has decided on his own to take a tranquilizer before an exam is also abusing drugs. The term drug abuse also refers to the ingestion of a medically useful mood-altering drug for a purpose other than that for which it was prescribed. A person who has been prescribed a barbiturate for insomnia but who uses it to get intoxicated at a party is abusing drugs. Drug abuse also describes any use - except for medical research - of mind-changing drugs and substances having no legitimate medical application. Anyone who smokes marihuana or takes LSD is abusing drugs. Anyone who uses heroin is a drug abuser. Anyone who chews morning glory seeds is abusing drugs. (Note that the consumption of alcoholic beverages, which in some cases- technically could fall into this category, is not considered drug abuse in our society.) The term drug abuse is also applied to the inhalation of fumes from gasoline, various types of adhesives and household cements, and other solvents. Since inhalation of these fumes can result in mood and behavior changes, it will be considered here along with the more well-known forms of drug abuse. Obviously, all forms of drug abuse are not alike in their dangers to society. Nor can every type of drug abuse be equally controlled. But whenever possible, laws have been passed to curtail what society feels are the most dangerous forms of this practice. These laws have, for the most part, been on the books a long time attesting to the fact that drug abuse is not a new problem. In fact, the criminal investigation files of our large cities show conclusively that Americans have long sought escape from life’s problems with the aid of opium, morphine, herion, codeine, meperidine and other narcotics. NON-NARCOTIC ABUSE In recent years, a number of synthetic, non-narcotic drugs have been receiving the attention of the abuser. Stimulants (like the amphetamine drugs) and depressants (like the barbiturates) head the list. Certain tranquilizers are also increasingly used for nonmcdical purposes. Abuse of the hallucinogenic agents has received considerable publicity. Many of these non-narcotic drugs are important even essential in the practice of medicine; they arc, in fact, far more widely prescribed by doctors than arc the narcotics. (The hallucinogens are an exception; no useful medical application has been demonstrated.) The medical need for abusable drugs requires that they be manufactured in large quantities by many manufacturers and widely distributed. In spite of the many security precautions of Black Politics Added To Political Science Dept. By Stephen Russell The course, Black Politics, has been added as part of the new program in Afro-American Studies for the year 1970-1971. This semester, there arc 24 students in the class which is under the instruction of Dr. G. James Fleming. The objectives of the course, according to the syllabus, are to inform students of the contributions Blacks made to U.S. politics. The course shows how our very presence influenced politics before we got actively involved. Morgan State, for years, has emphasized practical politics in its' institute for Political Education. With a heavy concentration of Black people in cities, coupled with the exodus of whites to the suburbs. Black political power is a reality. A student wishing to be in the class should have some knowledge ol fmlitu al science and be willing and able to load i great deal Bruce Hawkins Arli-t SPOKESMAN RALLY HELD; STUDENTS DISCUSS MEANS OF RAISING BAIL MONEY FOR JAILED COLLEAGUES By Ann Booker, Phyllis Jones and Helen Shaw Methods of raising over 5100,000 in bail for five Morgan Students was discussed at two on-campus rallies, October 16. To present these ideas effectively, we have also tried to co-ordinate explanations with our layouts and photographs to help give our reader a better understanding of our I campus life. Needless to say our yearbook has been hard work, late hours, brainstorming ideas, sharing jobs, fatigue, and even a lit- tle fun. To my editors and their staffs. I sincerely thank you for all these things, and for each idea, criticism, smile, and joke that you gave. There are still many good ideas, innova- tions, and improvements which we were not able to use in these 272 pages. But these remain as an invitation and a ehal- f lenge to the editor and staff of the 1972 PROMETHEAN. To these people go my best wishes for a successful yearbook.
