MARYLAND PROMETHEAN MORGAN 9TATE COLLEGE BALTIMORE, MARYLAND Revolution is now a mood—we fear it shall soon be a reality—a revolt against the establishment —the establish- ment's wars—the establishment's pre- tentious democracy—the establish- ment's equality— ... must we also have our bloody day? sun- ... for second class americans that has resulted in the family welfare program. that has resulted in the slum, that equality with the invisible but feasible in before it— revolution of a mood and a way of thinking that is developing into decisive action— revolution—a threat or a saviour? only time will tell. I'm Black!— i'm black is the incensed cry of the man who was once called a slave—let me be a man—i have an identity—and that you cannot take away from me—i'm black! so let me have what is mine— you cannot pacify me with empty prom- ises anymore. PEACE. of this there can be none as long as hate s song of war can be heard over the chant- ing of the catechism and for as long as the great instigator shall walk the earth, for he is the MAN IN THE BLACK RAINCOAT. 5 There is a challenge— there is a challenge by the young, by the underprivileged “second class americans . . . . . . their challenge is to a traditional rule of despotism in the guise of democracy. 6 There is e cry— There is a cry across this nation—peace! we want peace, is the fervent cry of a people whose leaders have betrayed their trust. 7 knowing you like i do is not knowing how you feel. . .. you find it's too short a time to believe this thing is real. ... so it may seem just a sum- mer dream and dreams don't seem to mean a thing. —Victor Bonaparte strange how knowing someone for just a little while and knowing that they have been gone for just a little while, strange how you can miss them so very much. i swear. ... this was a little more than just some hot fun in the summertime. i swear. 8 9 Dr. Martin D. Jenkins President of the College 1948-1970 10 February 16, 1970 To Fellow Members of the Class of 1970 — Congratulations! For 22 years I have written these greetings to the members of the graduating classes. I am this year retiring as President of Morgan State and so now I become for all time in the future a member of the Class of 1970 with all the rights, duties and privileges thereto ap- pertaining. Perhaps the greatest change I have observed in my years here is in the area of occupational opportunities. When I assumed office in 1948, our graduates looked forward as a matter of course to partici- pating in a racially segregated society. Almost all of them antici- pated entering teaching or one of the other professions. Now in 1970 you fully anticipate participating in a racially integrated society and members of your class will enter a wide range of occupations. You face the world with a full measure of self-reliance, confident of your ability to compete and to cooperate with all other American college graduates. You are certain that some members of your class will go on to the highest political and management positions in our society, that others will make original contributions in the sciences, literature and the arts. As I look back I think now that my greatest achievement as President has been my contribution to your awareness that you can participate in our society and achieve at the highest levels. Congratulations! I wish for each of you a successful life — not simply success to be counted in material gain but success in attaining worth- while social and personal goals to the end that this will be a better world for your having lived in it. Cordially, fartin D. Jenk President P.S. Don't Tnfget to invite me to our class reunions. 12 Senate Resolution NO. 11 8ENATOR COLE—Rules By the SENATE, February 14, 1956. Alico Parham Director of Student Activities February 16, 1970 To The Class of 1970 Morgan State College Baltimore, Maryland 21212 Dear Seniors: We are sharing one thing in common in this year of 1970 and it is that we are leaving Alma Mater....you for the first time by way of graduation and for me it will be a second time. My first was for graduation and now my second leaving is for reason of retirement. It has been a great privilege and a gratifying and satisfying experience to work with the Class of 1970 and with many other Morgan students during the past twelve years that I have served as Director of Student Union and Student Activities. My thoughts go out in memory to the dedicated faculty members who served as inspiration to me in my undergraduate years. As I have worked with you and many other students, again, I am inspired by your deep interest and concern and I feel confident that you will go forth from Alma Mater and make a worthy and creditable contribution in this period of time when the needs are so great. May God bless you. Alice W. Parham, Director of Student Union and Student Activities Under the direction of Mrs. Alice W. Parham, the Student Union has taken part in many of the activities of the Morgan community, sponsoring numerous programs of interest to the Black student and bringing such notables as Chuck Stone. Jay Saunders Redding. Whitney Young, Bill Cosby. Five Stairsteps. Jerry Butler, Muhammed Ali and the late Dr. Martin L. King. Many times, the Student Union building is the host for these presentations as sponsored by the various organizations on campus. Mrs. Parham's job has been to coordinate all of these activities, wherever they occurred, so that the students could enjoy a maximum number of events. Later this year, the McKeldin Student Union will begin to undergo the changes that will transform it into a more spacious accommodation. The old Union will thus depart with its Director. 22 The Class of 1970 hereby dedicafes fhe 1970 edition of the PROMETHEAN to Mrs. Alice W. Parham for outstanding dedication and performance at Morgan Qtate College. 23 LlbKrtKl MORGAN -ifATE C LLfeUb BALTIMORE 12. Morgan was Chartered in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Insti- tute and remained as such until 1890. It is therefore clear how our affiliation with the Christian Doctrine be- came so strong and although the Christian Center is not technically a part of the Morgan Campus, since this is now a state school, we are still as individuals closely al- lied with it.
