Morgan was Chartered in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute and remained as such until 1890 It is therefore clear how our affiliation with the Christian Doctrine became so strong and although the Christian Center is not technically a part of the Morgan Campus, since this is now a state school, we arc still as individuals closely allied with it. The Centenary Biblical Institute used lecture rooms of churches as classrooms, notably the Sharp Street Methodist Church, and instruction was given somewhat irregularly. It was not until October 9, 1869, that the school was formally opened at 44 East Saratoga Street, with the Rev. J. Emory Round as principal. The original purpose of the school was to prepare young men for the Christian ministry. When this building became too small to accomodate the classes, a stone building was erected at the corner of Fulton and Edmondson Avenues in 1880. The growth of the school was marked by the increase in curriculum of- ferings—normal academic subjects, especially, were added--the admission of young women as students, and the establishment of two branches. The first. Princess Anne Academy was estab- lished at Princess Anne. Maryland in 1886. This school is now the eastern branch of the University of Maryland. The second branch school, established in 1891 at Lynchburg. Virginia, and called the Virginia Collegiate and Industrial Institute, was de- stroyed by fire December 10, 1917. These two schools em- phasized secondary and industrial training. The second period of development began in 1890 when Dr. Lyttleton F. Morgan, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees gave a large sum of money to the institution. Dr. Morgan's endowment allowed the school to offer courses for the first time on the collegiate level. The name of the school was changed to Morgan College. On November 20, 1939 by Act of the General Assembly of 1939, Morgan College officially became a state institution. Its name was changed from Morgan College to Morgan Stole Col- lege and so our official connection with the Church was ended. The Morgan Christian Center which stands adjacent to our campus still provides the much needed spiritual guidance for the Morgan Community. 35 Above: Archie William, Editor and Connie John«on, layout Staff. Essentially, there- fore personnel work is an integral part of the educational program. It has as its two-fold objective: first, to assist each student to discover his highest poten- tialities and to accept responsibility for developing them: and, second, to inter- pret student needs and program avail- able so that all persons in the college share in the building of good interper- sonal relations. Indeed, tire major con- cern of the personnel program is for the quality of human relations which is being learned and practiced in the Col- lege from day to day. Operating under a Coordinator, the Student Personnel Program is broad in scope featuring a special counseling Center which pro- vides organized, systematic counseling for freshmen and general counseling for upperclassmen. The program makes ex- tensive use of administrative officers, staff personnel, and faculty members. Specific responsibilities of the Coordina- tor arc: first, to unify all personnel poli- cies, programs, and services, of the Col- lege; second, to coordinate and integrate the counseling functions of the Deans of Men and Women, the Directors of Ad- missions and Placement. Research and Evaluation. Health. Health Services, and the Morgan Christian Center, the Regis- trar. and faculty advisers in order to in- sure that all counseling is done from the same general point of view; third, to in- terpret. supervise, and integrate the work of professional counselor; and fourth, to Pictured above: Administrative Staff: Dr. Harold Delaney, Dean of the College, Dr. K. Freshmen are required to participate in “Introduction to college Week” at which time regular faculty members serve as leaders in a special program directed by the Coordinator of Student Personnel Services. This program is designed to give the College information about new students: to give students information about the College; to help the students become acquainted with a part of the Morgan State College Family; and to acquaint the students with the demand of college life. In addition to specialized counseling provided by professional counselors to Freshmen, faculty advisers are assigned to students for departmental advising. Counselors and advisors meet regularly in an inservice training Program. Be- ginning in the second year, each stu- dent is assigned a faculty adviser in the department in which he is registered. The Counseling Center works closely with these faculty advisers. 'Hie counseling staff is available for consultation with all students. These counselors provide special and professional counseling for students who are not achieving at their predicted and or maximum potential. These services are also available to stu- dents who are in academic difficulty, overseas students, honor students, and transfer students. Faculty members may refer students to the Counseling Center. The Counseling Center provides the assistance needed or refers such students to other campus agencies. Curler, Assistant to the President; the late Ceorge Crant, Dean of the College, and Edward N. Wilson, retired Registrar. 74 75 the Counseling Center refers students to off-campus services. An extensive testing service is conducted by the Director of Research and Evalua- tion. On the basis of standardized tests of aptitude, achievement, interest, and personality, professional counselors and faculty members and advisers help the student objectively to appraise his own capacities and interests. Also, these tests are used as a basis for determining the student’s fitness for certain curricula or courses in the College, and for measur- ing bis progress through these different curricula. This office provides both group and individual testing. The College Health Service aims to di- rect the thinking and action of students toward more healthful living. The over- all program is under the direction of the Director of Student Health Services. The Health Service includes complete physical examination, campus inspec- tions of sanitary facilities, followup service to secure correction of remedial defects, and an infirmary with registered nurses and attendants. The Administrative Services also in- clude a placement service. At Morgan State College, Placement is a coopera- tive effort. The Placement Service co- ordinates and renders individualized services to the student, to the employer, and to the institution. The Placement Service is a repository for current oc- cupational information for distribution and for placement permanent record purposes. The Services, including the conducting of preliminary and follow- up “get acquainted” meetings with com- pany and screening officials, continue throughout the calendar year. 76 Above: Dr. Satisli Parckh, Business Monagcr; Mr. Kcubcn Komi berg, Assistant to the Busi- ness Manager, and Mr. John A. Division Chairmen The curriculum at Morgan State College i organized into three divisions. The grouping of related departments into divisions is de- signed to facilitate the integration of subject matter, improve cor- relation between and among departments and to enrich the experi- ences of students through choice of courses in closely related fields in terms of interest and need. The division of Humanities includes the departments of Art; Foreign Language; English and Speech; Music Education; and Philosophy. The Division of Natural Sciences includes the departments of Biology; Chemistry; Health, Physical Education and Recreation; Home Economics; Mathematics; Phy- sics; Psychology; and Science Education. The Division of Social Sciences includes the Departments of Economics and Business; Education; History, Political Science and Geography; Military Sci- ence; and Sociology. Congratulations! As you look back over your college years you have many pleasant memories-—these you will increasingly cherish in the years ahead. As I look back with you, I think of the extent to which Morgan State College has made an effective contribution to your development. We have attempted to help you attain the Goals for the Morgan Student, to prepare you for constructive occupa- tional participation, to encourage you to go the Second Mile in your endeavors, to help you discover your creative talents. Beyond these we have tried to give you a feeling of confidence in yourselves and to lift your levels of aspiration. Each of you will play many roles in the years ahead. 1 sincerely hope that in all your endeavors you will establish high goals and strive to attain them. As you go to make your places in the world those of us who remain at Morgan State will watch you with high hopes, our pride growing as your achievements mount. I wish for each of you a successful life—not simply success to be counted in material gains, but success in attaining worthwhile social and personal goals to the end that this will be a better world for your having lived in it. 94 Dear Class of 1969. In his address to the graduating class of Yale University, June 21. 1903, President Arthur Twining Hadley stated: “You will have failed to learn the best lesson of your college life unless you have caught the spirit which teaches you to value money and office and other symbols of success for the sake of the possibilities of service which they represent, and to despise the man who thinks of money or office rather than the use he can make of them. It is this way of estimating success which makes a man u gentleman in his dealings with others, which makes him a patriot when his country calls for his services, which makes him a Christian in his concept of life and his ideals of daily living. These are the things which count in the long run.” I do not think that there is a single one of us in this graduating class who values life primarily as a means of securing comfort. We value it as a field of action, and never before in the history of any graduating class is the course of action we must take so eminently defined. In 1969, the most essential action we can take, the most vital commitment we can make, is to channel our knowledge and expertise into the urban ghetto. For there is no one else who understands the plight of ghetto dwellers as we do. There is no one else who should l e more committed to do the kind of job we know must be done. I.ct our class be remembered as the class which rolled up its sleeves and faced the challenge of urban living. Let our gift to Morgan be everlasting service to the faltering communities throughout America. My good wishes will always be with you as you become partners in this noble mission. The building houses the fine arts area of the college program including music, dramatics and art. Murphy Hall is equipped with classrooms, studios, an art gallery and a 1100-scat auditorium. I 205 206 Music, Culture, and Art at Morgan The Frederick Douglass Memorial Statue and The Soper Library The Frederick Douglass Memorial Statue one of only two in existence in the country stands before the Morris A. Soper Library. Soper Library was named for the late Judge Morris A. Soper, who served the college for thirty four years as Chairman and member of the Board of Trustees. The Library aims to contribute as effectively as possible to the instructional and research program; to teach students to use library took effectively; and to encourage them in the independent use of books and other communications materials. Erected in 1939 the four story stone and concrete structure has been expander! twice to meet growing needs of the institution. These renovations resulted in increased seating capacity greater accessibility of materials to stu- dents and faculty by providing special reading rooms, study areas and an open shelf arrangement. A part of the more than 91,000 volumes which comprise Soper Library’s collection arc those works in special collections. The Soper Collection includes books on Africa with emphasis on Africa. South of the Sahara. The Negro Collection is a hotly of historically significant and currently pub- lished books by and about the Negro and includes the pa| crs and memorabilia of such j ersons ns the late Emmett J. Scott, one time secretary to Booker T. Washing- ton, and Arthur J. Scott, who was as- sociated with the Far East Consular Divi- sion of the State Department, the Forhush Collection which deals with materials as- sociated with Quakers and slavery and the Carl Murphy Collection which is the newest addition to our library collections. 207 A[fterthoughts ... on A Separate Peace which every man must find for himself in this world of cataclysmic vicissitudes. 209 Turmoil . . .
