Your class is a first - the first class as Morgan State College begins the second century of its history. This is. in a symbolic sense, significant. In this context you should determine to make the postgraduate record of the members of this class so outstanding that in future years it may be well said, the Class of 1968 was truly first! Each of you will play many roles in the years ahead —in your occupation, in your community, in your family, and in your personal devclo| - ment. I sincerely hope that in all your endeavors you will establish high goals and strive to attain them. As you go to make your places in the world, those of us who remain at Morgan State will watch you with high hopes, our pride growing as your achievements mount. I wish for each of you a successful life — not simply success to be counted in material gains, but success in attaining worthwhile social and personal goals to the end that this will be a better world for your having lived in it. ROCEIt k WILLIAMS Professor of Psychology and Chairman of Department Teacher of the Year One of the more recently initialed honors given at Morgan Slate College is the selection of “Teacher of the Year. Nonetheless, the award is a serious one and special attention is given to the selection of candi- dates. This year, the winner of the award is l)r. Roger K. Williams. Mis concerned and sincere attention to the needs of his students is readily acknowledged by all who have come into contact with him inside and outside of class. The list of faculty members who have previously held this honor is an impressive one and the name of Dr. Roger K. Williams is a very distinguished addition. 40 In Memoriam WALTER M. HYAN On July 14, 1907. the faculty and students of Morgan mourned the loss of Mr. Walter M.S. Ryan. Mr. Ryan had been a distinguished member of the English department for twelve years. Mr. Ryan was the recipient of three Master of Arts degrees. He studied at Howard University. Harvard University. Catholic University. LaVette University and Indiana University. While on the faculty here at Morgan. Mr. Ryan served as chairman of the Assembly Committee and as chairman of the Student Personnel Services. Morgan was truly honored to have had such a well qualified educator serve for so long a period of time. His loss has been deeply felt by all who knew him. The Morgan State College Mace, presented to the College in 1956 by the General Alumni Association, is borne by the Faculty Marshal in all academic processions as a tangible symbol of authority. The Mace was created from stone and wood taken from the grounds of Morgan and embellished with silver clapps and bosses. The silver shafts are engraved with the dates of each period of Morgan’s history: Centenary Biblical Institute, 1867-1890; Morgan College, 1890-1939; and Morgan State College, 1939-. In this year, 1967-1968.1 have been honored and delighted to serve you as your queen. My reign has been filled with many wonderful experiences that. I am sure, will keep this year shinning and alive for me into the distant future. I will never forget that evening in October when I was crowned at my coronation Ball. Nor will I forget the many centennial affairs, football and basketball games, the Mother - Daughter Banquet and the countless numl cr of other events taking place on our campus. When I shall think over this fleeting period in my life ten or twenty years from now. I am certain that I will recall the warm smiles and friendly words with which you have greeted me. How could I ever forget that true Morgan Spirit that became so much a part of me? In conclusion. I sincerely hope that each of you will realize your aspirations for the future and that as you go on into life. Morgan will remain a permanent and ini|x rtant facet of your past. Maria Campbell 69 Graduate School Dr. Frank DeCosta Dean of the Graduate School The Graduate School of Morgan State College came in- to existence in 1964, only four sl ort years ago. At present, it is under the direction of the Graduate Council with Dean DeCosta serving as Chairman. Masters degrees are offered in Education, Science, and Social Science. The Evening and Summer sessions are well-attended by teachers and students from all over Maryland and throughout the country. The number of full-time graduate students also increases yearly. Dear Seniors, Many of us are approaching these last days with a sigh of relief. “Well, it’s all over and 1 finally made it”, we ll say. But it is not over. These few years have merely been preparations for the many years to come. 1 would like to remind each of you that we all have a tremendous debt to pay. We are indebted to our teachers, parents, and friends. The only way we can pay'this debt is by making a commitment to any ideal, any goal, or any persons who can stand as a testa- ment to the fact that these years have not been mere stepping stones to comfortable, prosperous living. I sincerely hope that, in the years to come, we will be able to look back at this milestone in our lives and remember the day when we decided to begin living the life for which we had been prepared. I wish for each of you Much Success in your Careers. Sincerely, CO. VJ Ruth W. May den President 71 SENIORS 73 Senior Class Officers President RUTH W. The Center aids in the religious, social, and recreational activities of our students. The Sunday morning worship services, Sunday Evening Fellowship Hour, Lenten Meditation, and the Religion-in-Life Week observance are only a few of the religious services provided for the many denominations which our students represent. Whenever possible, the Center enriches the lives of all students who use its facilities. 166 Newman Club 167 168 CULTURAL 169 Art on Campus CHARLES WHITE DRAWINGS SECOND EXHIBITION NOVEMBER 1 — NOVEMBER 24. 1967 THE CARL MURRAY FINE ARTS CENTER MORGAN STATE COLLEGE Baltimore, Maryland JAMES E. LEWIS Director of Art Gallery I like to think of Charles White not just as an artist-nor even as an American artist-but as an artist who, more than any other, has found a way of embodying in his art the very texture of Negro experience as found in life in America. Recognizing and seizing upon that which is unique as well as that which is general or universal about the Negro people, he has. as Mr. Belafonte has remarked, spoken in “the poetic beauty of Negro idioml In any case. White has made of his own artistic language a splen- did vehicle for that idiom. Charles is an artist steeped in life; and his in- formed artistic vision conduces to an understanding of vivid pictorial symbols which, though large as life itself, arc altogether free of false or distorted ideas or shallow and dubious emotion. THE ART OF CHARLES WHITE: AN APPRECIATION by James A. Porter 170 In an era when the artist is expressing his detachment from the human condition by a Mcool and geometric style, Charles White’s superb draw- ings challenge this lack of faith and self-involvement. Their epic quality affirms his deep concern for humanity, his love of man and life, and his belief that brotherhood is not just a catchword. Here, on his canvasses, the vitality and poignancy of humankind arc captured for the eye to see and the heart to feel. 171 IMAGES OF DIGNITY: THE DRAWINGS OF CHARLES WHITE by Benjamin Horowitz Humanities Division Conferences “Toward an American Aesthetic” Professor Henry N. It no doubt was apparent to everyone that the Golden Bears were the team to beat . . . even though they were not beaten. Much of the success of the bears can lx? credited to the following graduating men: Gerald Boyd, Thomas Dean, Carlton Dabney. Daryl Johnson, Alvin Mitchell, Harvey Palmore and Jeffrey Queen. These seven players, who were the “cream” of the Golden Bears, were all drafted by various professional football teams. Boyd went to the New York Giants, as did Dean. Dabney went to the Atlanta Falcons and Johnson went to the Boston Patriots. Mitchell went to the Cleveland Browns and Queen to the San Diego Chargers. Last, but not least, Palmore went to Cincinnati. This was truly a “Golden Bear Year.” 180 - 181 WRESTLING THE 1968 WRESTLING TEAM Front Row: Left to right—Albert Brown, Michael Armstrong, Larry McCoy, Dwight Evans, James Harvey. The Homecoming Parade it- self was surprisingly different. From the linc-up of the floats and bands to the parade down Hillcn Road to the first kickoff in Memorial Stadium, there was never a dull minute. Truly this was the “year that was”—a year we’ll never forget. 190 HOMECOMING 191 HOMECOMING FLOATS 103 BASKETBALL THE 1967-68 VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM. After losing their first few games, the Bears underwent a metamorphic change, going on a five-game winning streak. However, the need for time, experience, and all the other criteria needed for a good team finally caught up with the Morgan Hoopsters as they finished out the season with a dismal showing. This 1967 1968 Freshmen team experienced one of the finest seasons in the Freshmen basketball history of the school. Under Coach Embry this team was billed as the team to beat ... in the future. Even though the team was not eligible to play in the CIAA this year, the seeds of victory for the next few years, seemed to have been planted this year. The season itself was exciting with most Morganites coming out to every game. The game that will probably be remembered most was the Homecoming game against North Carolina A T State University. As you will remember Morgan trailed in the game until the final minutes when the Bears pulled it out. I tremble at the enormity of this added responsibility . . yet it is mine and mine alone. I am determined . . . confident . hopeful. Some times the world has deserted me; often it has conflicted with me . . . frequently it has seemed inimical to me. But it is now my world, and it will be only what I make of it. Mine is a difficult task . . . but I must succeed . . . and I will! 209 210 Writing term papers, performing exper- iments, completing projects and engaging in other related academic experiences, I find lime to laugh and relax ... to rejoice ... to soar to the heights of contentment . . . for I have trust in myself ... I have faith in my abilities. 211 lam unyielding. . . persistent . . dedicated. I have my goals . . . though they sometimes seem to fade from my view. But from exposure to these facts I formulate ideas of my own ... I assume principles . . . con- victions . . . and I stand by them. 215 V For tuam years I have followed . . . but now I am ready to lead.... The world needs me ... it demands me . . . Mine is an eager response to its cry. 217 Sartre on existentialism . . . an intriguing game of cards . . . just taking it easy . . . my interests are multifarious. But there is order and unity in my variety .... My generation is one: I share with it the same burdens, responsibilities and ex- pectations. 218 219 I cannot sit by and acquiesce . ... I want to mould the world ... to make it my world ... I want to be a part... to construct ... to alter ... to improve. 220 222 Undaunted by the deluge of human shortcomings . . . yet faced by a world that refuses to understand . . . often confused . . . despairing sometimes ... I emerge exultant. . . triumphant. . . victorious. . . defiant. . . willing to assume my tasks . . . rejoicing in my new responsibilities . ... I defy anyone and anything that tries to limit my success. I will stumble ... I will fall . . . but I will rise again. 223 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. January 15,1929 - April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King will not have died in vain if Americans, if Negroes, interpret his death as reaffirmation, as rededication to the things for which he stood —im- plementation of the American dream through non-violence, through working with people regardless of race to change the ills of our society. 224 ?
