1965 PROMETHEAN Morgan State College Baltimore, Maryland 2 Continuous Growth In an Age of Transition The members of the Class of 1965 have been the fortunate witnesses of and participants in a period of drastic and continuing transition in American national life. We have not watched idly as man ascended unto the threshold of space, shattered barriers of prejudice, and embarked upon similar unprecedented endeavors. If there has ever been a time when each of us could say with the poet Wordsworth: There wo o time when meadow, grove, ond stream. The earth, and every common sight. To me did seem Apparelled in celestial light . . . that time is now. As our society grew beyond its earlier limita- tions, so did we through our experiences at Morgan grow. The constant ideal of our under- graduate years has been individual growth in a time of transition. 3 What sculptor is to a block of marble, education is to the soul. — Addison In recognition of unselfish dedication, indefatigable labor, and exemplary personal character, we, the Class of 1965, dedicate the PROMETHEAN to a scholar who will always remain high in our admiration — Dr. Edward N. Wilson. Having served the Morgan College Community faithfully and loyally for forty years as registrar, he has earned the respect of all whose lives he has touched, having left each more enriched and more ennobled for the contact. As he begins a new task —that of preparing a written history of Morgan State College —we, the last class he registered, take this opportunity to express our gratitude and extend our wish that continued success may attend him in his future endeavors. 4 v' Because the PROMETHEAN represents the combined efforts of many of the students who were acquainted with Dr. Thelma V. Winder either academically or personally, this tribute is a tangible expression of our sincere feeling of loss of the noble woman who served as Associate Professor of Home Economics and Head of the Department. Dr. Winder's experienced and invaluable contributions to the Morgan State College Community and to those students whom she taught will never be obliterated. It is with much gratitude and pride that we reflect upon her bright life, her ready word of encouragement, and most of all her untiring service to us. Silting, left to right: Dr. E. Dale Adkins, Dr. Carl J. Murphy, Dr. Richard W. Emory, Judge Josiah F. Henry, Jr. Standing, left to right: President Martin D. Jonkins, John L. Berry, Dr. Kenneth O. Walker, Henry E. Niles, Dr. Eugene Byrd, Charles G. Hutzler, III; Dr. Edward N. Wilson. Board of Trustees The chief organized governing body of Morgan State College is the Board of Trustees. Each trustee plays a strikingly vital role in the formation of college policy and in the upholding of the ideals promulgated by the college founders. The college has been and will be in the years to come highlighted by its perpetual growth and rapid adjustments. The Board will, as it has so effectively done in the past, recognize difficult situations and exert its finest concerted effort in making solutions. It also meets to fulfill duties such as determining the annual college budget —which is done at the spring meeting. The decisions made by the trustees and the subsequent action taken are significant in the formulation and constancy of the reputation of the college. It is by these decisions that the composite view of Morgan State College is molded. 6 TO BACH MEMBER OF THE CLASS OF 1965-CONGRATULATIONS! On o Monday afternoon this June you will be awarded that coveted long-looked-forward to degree, “with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities thereto appertaining. We have done our very best here at Morgan State to help you merit this distinctive honor. The creative educational program you hove experi- enced with the guidance of a well-qualified, dedicated faculty and staff should have been for you an ex- citing “Adventure in Higher Education. The theme of your class. Continuous Growth in on Age of Transition, clearly suggests that the true value of your education here will be assessed in terms of the intelligence, responsibility and creativity re- flected in the many parts you will play in the years ahead. Those of you who go the Second Mile in the develop- ment of your talents will make constructive contributions to your professions and your communities. As you go to make your places in the world, those of us who remain at Morgan State will watch you with high hopes, our pride growing as your achievements mount. I wish for each of you a successful life —not simply success to be counted in material gains, but success in attaining worthwhile social and personal goals to the end that this will be a better world for your having lived in it. Martin D. Jenkins, President 7 The Morgan State College Mace The Mace is a gift to the College From the General Alumni Association (June 4, 1956). The Alumni Office, established on September 1, 1957, has made a great deal of progress over the years in building for the future of Morgan to the mutual advantage of us all. The constant interest and assistance of the administration, faculty and staff have added new strength to the college and the Alumni program. The objectives are to help us to continue to be good ambassadors for the college through our financial contributions, through recruiting of qualified students and the spreading of goodwill for the institution. One of the main purposes of the office is to build up mutual pride in our Faculty, pride in our Students, and pride in our Alumni Association. 8 Growth in Academic Achievement and Guidance This phase of our growth encompasses those individuals who have proven to be essential to our education: The administration, the faculty, the stu- dent academic organizations, the sen- iors. Every man who rises above the common level has received two educations: the first from his teach- ers; the second, more personal and important, 9 from himself — Edward Gibbon Administrative Staff Williom W. Many of us have ambitions and opportunities to which those of other generations could aspire but could not attain; today, barriers built of fear and ignorance have been toppled. We have seen the dawn of this new day. We are the generation of the Great Society , and in order to take our rightful places in this Great Society , we must continue to strive for excellence in our present and future endeavors. Seniors, we have arrived, and we are rightfully ready to maintain the standard of excellence with which we have been confronted here at Morgan. In the Morganite tradition, let us continue to sow the seeds of knowledge and reap the golden harvests, for the weeds of ignorance ultimately bear bitter fruit. u Eliso M. This year's award was won most deservedly by Dr. Benjamin A. Quarles. Dr. Quarles, an accomplished his- torian and renowned author of several books, is indeed an asset to Morgan's faculty. His superb instruction of history is well known and much agreed upon by members of the student body and faculty alike. Those fortunate students who have matured under his teaching attest to the genial warmth and radiant qualities of his character. 21 Division of Humanities Dr. C. The process refined and tempered us, enabling us to impress the stamp of our abilities in the fabric of our college's history. Academic excellence is reflected in the achievement of James Scott, who was appointed R.O.T.C. Cadet Colonel; the listing of ten seniors in the 1964-65 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; and in those students who were selected for membership in honor societies. The class had its full measure of those talented with ability to perform feats of physical skill. We had Carol Whitaker. Ronald Blake, Isaiah Rasbury, and Wilbur Robinson, who led us to a CIAA championship in 1962-63 on the gridiron. In basket- ball, Edward Strawthers, James Turk, Charles Johnson, and David Nesbitt kept the competition keen, while James Carter performed brilliantly on the golf links. Our physical and intellectual development was spurred by the vitality and fluidity of our environment. We witnessed our college's first tentative steps toward expanding the curriculum to include offerings at the university level. We charted the progress which led to a men's dormitory and a footbridge connecting the northern and southern extremeities of the campus. 42 Senior Class Officers 43 Eleanor R. The althletic program, which includes football, basketball, swim- ming and hockey, is conducted as an integral part of the educational pro- gram of the college. Among its objectives are the development and main- tenance of excellence in character and self-expression and the encourag- ment of good sportsmanship, desirable attitudes, and the wholesome utilization of team work in achieving goals. The physical aspect of our campus has been illuminated by the addition of a long awaited foot bridge and three buildings — Carter-Grant- Wilson Building, Key Hall, and O'Connell Hall. Do honor to your bodies. Reverence your physical natures, not simply for themselves. Only as ends they are not worthy of it, but because in health and strength lies the true basis of noble thought and glorious devotion. The achievement of Mr. Hill was phenomenal during his service as coach of the football team, in that he was instrument- al in the winning of 14 CIAA championships. His guidance was certainly an asset to the teams he coached during his 34 years. Therefore, he will be missed by the Golden Bears. Growth in Social And Spiritual Life The social success of the college this year was achieved through the united efforts of everyone who felt the need to give of himself. We as stu- dents grew closer and closer together, forming bonds of lasting friend- ships. In striving to maintain meaningful purposes in our lives, an integral part of our campus spiritual life was incorporated in the Christian Council and other religious organizations. Social progress makes the well-being of all more and more the business of each; it binds all closer and closer together in bonds from which none can escape. 123 Henry George Miss Morgan Brenda L Thompson 124 Moments To Remember Brenda Lee Thompson, Miss Morgan for the school year 1964-65, was graduated from Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland, in June, 1961. Upon graduation. Miss Thompson was the worthy recipient of four scholarships. Now she has proven herself to be truly an asset to the Morgan community. Not only has she made contributions to Morgan itself, but she has also contributed much to the community beyond Morgan. Apart from having been elected Miss Morgan for the year 1964-65, she was also voted editor of the Spokesman for the period February, 1964, to June, 1965. Miss Thompson, an active member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, was selected as Miss Zeta Phi Beta of 1964-65 and Zeta of the Year for 1965-66. She has also been a member of the English Club, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Women's Dormi- tory Council, Le Cercle Francias, Lambda lota Tau, The President's Academic Council, and the Federation of Presidents. Miss Thompson has shown special interest in teaching and in journalism. In accordance with her in- terest in journalism, she is currently writing a column entitled Young People on the Go for the Baltimore Afro American. This affords her some valuable experience in journalism and, at the same time, she is performing a commendable service in the community. Because of her interest in and concern for others and because of her enthusiastic participation in the activities of the college community. Miss Thompson has won the acclamation of the student body of Mor- gan State College, and she has indeed reigned majestically as Miss Morgan. 125 Class Queens Miss Freshman Mario Campbell Miss Junior Koran Robertson Miss Sophomore Elona Jenkins Miss Senior Barbara Bowman 126 The Pan-Hellenic Council The Pan Hellenic Council has worked untiringly to promote and insure harmoni- ous relationships among all campus Greek-letter organizations. Growth in Civic Leadership And in Aesthetic Appreciation Because of the college's concern for the incorpora- tion of as many art forms as possible in the daily campus life, many significant steps have been made. Since 1963, the college has instituted a Concert Series and a Book of the Month Program. The most recent develop- ment of the cultural program has been the acquisition of thirty-five paintings by American and European painters of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. In order to promote a cognizance of civic responsibility, the student body has engaged in mock political conventions and elections. The acquiring of culture is the developing of an avid hunger for knowledge and beauty. 147 Jesse Lee Bennett Political Science Institute The Institute for Political Science is a project in political education under the direction of Dr. G. This organization provides opportunity for dramatic expression in little theatre, radio, and tele- vision. Productions of the Players are presented on campus and throughout the community. The club, by being a member of the Negro Intercollegiate Dramatic Association, exchanges plays with other colleges in the Association. 152 153 Scene from Porlie Victorious.' Art on the Campus JACOB LAWRENCE M I W . W 04 mm Am O Ote Im4 M •• CM W—« 1H Unlike most subjects in the college curriculum, art deals with objects that may be seen and touched, in a kind of study which is not aimed at the mastery of theories and formulae but rather the apprehension of human experience of the past as it comes to us embodied in forms that live in the present. Art has been coming to Morgan's Fine Art Center, but with the acqui- sition of the paintings by American and European painters, from the eight- eenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, Morgan will now be able to provide that experience to its students, regularly, and within her own walls. 154 The HIRSCHL and ADLER GALLERIES COLLECTION OF MORGAN STATE COLLEGE Mr. and Mrs. R. Decosta Dean of Graduate School A new graduate program, primarily for ele- ary and secondary school teachers, was offered by Morgan State College beginning Sept- ember, 1964. Curricula leading to master's degrees will be offered in English, history, social science, and elementary education. 163 The increasing summer school enrollment shows that many students are taking advantage of the opportunity of summer education. Approximately three hundred students are in attendance at each of the six week sessions, with classes being held five days a week. Summer school is of great value to the stu- dent who wishes to accelerate, to those who must make up deficiencies, and to in-service teachers vyho wish to continue their education. Much of the success of the program can be credited to its director, Mrs. Beryl W. Williams, whose time and efforts have greatly contributed to the increasing popularity of summer study. 164 Provident Hospital Nursing Students All young women in nursing train- ing at Provident are required to com- plete the two basic freshman English courses and the biology course. Mr. Conaway, an alumnus of Morgan, majored in history as an undergraduate, and before becoming an insurance agent, taught in the Baltimore City Public Schools.
