Fellow Graduates: When the Class of 1964 assembled for the first time on a rainy September morning in 1960, the overriding impression appeared to be one Ofcurious nnticipution-the kind ofzmticipatiml which precedes the realization 0le dream. In our quest to realize the dream of a better life, we have come to recognize the formal elements of instruction-classr00ms and lectures, libraries, papers, and books-as representing a small part of the process of education. A continuous acceptance of the challenges of intellectual awareness and social responsibility are both requirements for the legacy of the educated members ofour society If we are to accept this legacy, and we must, the liberal arts degree cannot be viewed as an end, but rather as the passport to a meaningful life and a first step in the realization of a dream.
