% ede are really the thouyhtd oft jt men in ailayed andlandd... % id id the common air that hath ed iL JoL -Whitman, Song of Myself ■ The Senior Class Morgan State College NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR BALTIMORE, MARYLAND 3 LJ V ’ ) VW William Cowperonce wrote, “He is the free man whom the truth makes free.” But how does man proceed in finding this key to his freedom; and, if he does find it, how will he keep it? We must find truth with our minds by a never-ending search for knowledge, by asking questions and by sincere, mature thought. We must use our minds for the creation of full and worthwhile lives, for the crea- tion of a truly good life is more beautiful than the lines of the greatest poet or the colors of a gifted artist. As college graduates, we are beginning the ful- fillment of our lives. We have just started to learn what we do not know, and our growth is still the future. We are a new generation full of vigor and life, and we must be —we will be heard. If we make the ideals of “FREEDOM, THOUGHT AND CREATIV ITY” an integral part of our being, there can be little question of our success, and this is the theme for the PROMETHEAN of 1964. 5 View From ! 6 7 Dedication How many men can lay just claim to the ideals embodied in “Freedom, Thought, and Creativity’’? How many personify the full meaning of this thought? This individual is rare, but one of the greatest experiences of our lives was just such a man. In a brief instant, John Fitzgerald Kennedy gave new life and meaning to the words freedom and democracy. No longer were they merely words, but living, breathing entities. And, in a brief instant, he was gone. For each of us, the depth of his loss was a personal tragedy; but, for each of us, the ideals he lived for should be goals to personal triumph. We do not yet know how great a President Mr. Kennedy was, but we may be certain he was a truly great man. To John Fitzgerald Kennedy we humbly dedicate this book. e In Memoriam Throughout the eighty-five years of his life, Dr. Dwight Oliver Wendell Holmes was known as a very pleasant man who generated an atmosphere of truth, justice, and integrity. He was that type of well-rounded individual who seems to enjoy life the most, for his activities were not merely confined to the classroom. Dr. Holmes received his A.B. degree from Howard Academy and University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia; and, while at Howard, he played football and participated in a host of other extra-curricular activities. In 1902 he began a distinguished teaching career which was to last sixty-one years, and his wisdom, personality, and humor made him one of the most widely known teachers of his time. He didn't come to Morgan until 1937; but, as president of the college until his retirement in 1948, he helped make the transition from church school to state, and he proved a staunch educator as he strived to make Morgan an excellent educational institution. Dr. Holmes secured outstanding instructors, and tried to establish an atmosphere of friendliness, good will, and freedom so that each teacher could contribute his best to the college and community. And Dr. Holmes interest in Morgan went beyond his formal connection with the college; for after his retirement, he returned on numerous occasions to encourage the freshmen. During his stay at Morgan, Dr. Holmes’ foremost thought was: “Morgan State College should strive to produce men and women with a zeal for making the world a better and happier place.” In his memory, we, the graduating class of 1964, hope to fulfill this ideal. 9 A D M I N I S T R A T I O N Sparkling riverlets of water that quench the educa- tional thirst of youth — Anonymous Board of Trustees Left to Right, First Row: President Martin D. Murphy 12 From the desk of The President Fabinn Bachrach To the Class of 1964: It seems only yesterday that I greeted you on your very first day at Morgan State— that first day of Freshmen Week when you assembled at “8:59 Morgan time ’ to begin your college experience. Much has happened in this short four years. You have been the first to use new buildings: The Murphy Auditorium-Fine Arts Center, Key Hall, the remodeled Spencer Hall, the Presidents residence, O’Connell Hall—the lush new dormitory for men, the Carter-Grant-Wilson Administration Building, and there is just a chance that you will yet walk over that long-looked-forward-to footbridge over Cold Spring Lane! You have witnessed increasing enrollments—each succeeding class has been the largest You have experienced new curricula, new projects, new programs. During your time here athletic teams have won championships; the Debating Team has won tournaments; the Dramatics Society has scored triumphs; the ROTC has outdistanced other colleges and universities in summer camp competitions. You have seen many of your fellow students receive individual honors. You have shared the increasingly rigorous academic program and the expanding cultural activities of the college. You have been active participants in the American Revolution of 1963—the determined struggle for human rights, from Northwood to the March-on-Washington. You have been an integral part of an exciting, constructive, experience. Now this phase of your career is suddenly over. On a Monday afternoon this June you will be awarded that coveted degree, “With all the rights, privileges and responsibilities thereto appertaining.” As you now go your respective ways it is my fervent hope that you—each of you—will exemplify in your lives the theme of your class—Freedom, Thought and Creativity. Smith Editor-in-chief Associate editor 18 Art Editor Wilhelmlna Woodley Business Manager Alfredo Wiggins Literary Editor Stephen Foreman Sports Editor Robert Barley Fellow Graduates: When the Class of 1964 assembled for the first time on a rainy September morning in 1960, the overriding impression appeared to be one of curious anticipation— the kind of anticipation which precedes the realization of a dream. In our quest to realize the dream of a better life, we have come to recognize the formal elements of instruction— classrooms and lectures, libraries, papers, and books —as representing a small part of the process of education. A continuous acceptance of the challenges of intellectual awareness and social responsibility are both requirements for the legacy of the educated members of our society If we are to accept this legacy, and we must, the liberal arts degree cannot be viewed as an end, but rather as the passport to a meaningful life and a first step in the realization of a dream. Lee, Jr. Professor of English No one envied the Student Government its ticklish task of choosing Morgan’s Teacher of the Year. Many names were sub- mitted because of our outstanding faculty; and, from these. Dr. Ulysses G. Lee, Pro- fessor of English, was selected. The honor was well-deserved. Dr. Lee exemplifies all the attributes we have come to expect from a good teacher. The classroom is never dull, whether we are frantically taking down the notes of his voluminous knowledge or enjoying his well-placed sense of humor. Outside of the classroom he is a friend to be valued for his warmth, his intellect, and his interest. He is a dedicated man, and he cannot contain his enthusiasm for this dedication. One can ask no more, for Dr. Lee gives his students an unforgettable classroom experience and the image of a fine man. 47 N A T U R A L S C I E N C E S No pleasure is comparable to the standing upon the vantage-ground of truth.
