N 50S8 0Q3?t St33X PROMETHEAN 1963 The mace is a symbol of authority. It was introduced in the Twelfth Century in France by Phillip II, and in England by Richard I as an emblem of authority of state officials, ser- geants-at-arms, royal bodyguards and ecclesi- astical dignitaries. This emblem has been adopted by colleges and universities and is usually borne by the Faculty Marshall in aca- demic processions. The Morgan State College mace is made of wood from one of the oldest buildings on cam- pus, a polished stone from the campus quarry, three silver strips each engraved with an epoch of Morgan’s history, and is decorated with silver clasps and semiprecious stones. It was a gift to the College from the General Alumni Association (June 4, 1956). The mace was designed and executed by Dr. Charles Stallings of the Morgan State Col- lege Art Department. HAWKINS Adviser FOREWORD As one travels along life’s various pathways, he must not always be content to crouch in the crowd, mingle with the masses, or lope with the leaders. There come times in everyone’s life when it becomes necessary to delve into one’s resources and bring forth his initiative —take things into his hands and get the job done. The 1963 PROMETHEAN Staff has set forth in this Morgan State Col- lege Annual the jobs which each of us as a Senior has completed. We hope to inspire the underclassmen by showing them that the many jobs which must and may be done in the Morgan State College community can be success- fully accomplished. Life at Morgan could not be justifiably represented without mentioning a few of the many lines through which the Morgan student must pass to register, pay fees, eat, buy books, attend sports, dances, and assemblies. Thus, it is that we, the 1963 PROMETHEAN Stall, have sought to represent justifiably life at Morgan as we have seen it. digested it, and reflected on it since 1959. We proudly present LINES THAT LINK ’59 . . . ’63. 3 The Main Stream of our campus life flows from the quarry to the Christian Center. Pholo by Fabian Bachrach his most diligent student. In addition to this enthusiastic teaching, Mr. Meier has made substantial contributions to reputable scholarly journals, and his book Negro Thought in the Age of Hooker T. Washing- ton will roll off the University of Michigan Press next fall. The Mill and Wang Publish- ing Company has commissioned Mr. Meier to write a short history of the American Negro. This is August Meier, the scholar! The Class of 1963 is proud to pay tribute to one of Morgan’s true scholars and men of ac- tion. To August Meier we dedicate the 1963 PROMETHEAN for his having been and con- tinuing to be effective in leading the line to- ward the “good life.” DEDICATION In his popular essay. The Ameri- can Scholar Ralph Waldo Emerson indicated that the true American scholar was a man of action. Mr. August Meier is such a man. Mr. Meier has won the respect and esteem of not only the Morgan State College student body, but also that of many others in the Balti- more community who regard the struggle for human rights and dignity as the crucial challenge of our times. This Oberlin-Columbia trained associate professor of history has given himself fully to worth- while causes as the Civic Interest Group, the Americans for Democra- tic Action (as a former president of the Baltimore Chapter), and the National Association for the Ad- vancement of Colored People (as a former secretary of the Newark, New Jersey Chapter). Mr. Meier has sat. ridden, walked, written, and spoken for the eause of freedom. Morganites can never forget how excellently he acquitted himself in the debate with the highly verbal Black Muslim Leader. Malcolm X. This is Au- gust Meier, the man of action! As a scholar and classroom teacher, Mr. Meier loses none of his students’ respect. His conduct in his classes, enlivened by a refresh- ing sense of humor, a stiff diet of colatteral readings, and a few agreeable idiosyncrasies, leaves his students with paradoxical feelings of annoyance but appreciation, inadequacy but inspiration, frustration but enrichment. The “buggy” professor never relents in working his students hard. The consolation comes in knowing that he works ten times harder than 6 May the love of those u ho knew him keep his memory forever preen! IN MEMORIAM Dr. Edward Maceo Coleman was professor of history and former chairman of the Depart- ment at Morgan State College. He headed the College Department of History and Political Science from 1940 until 1953, was acting head of the department during the school term 1958- 1959 and acting Dean of Men at the College during the term 1942-1943. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, the late Dr. Coleman attended elementary school there and the public schools of Florence, Alabama. His degrees in higher education were earned at Taladega College, Alabama (A.B., 1923). Iowa State University (A.M., 1927) and the University of Southern California (Ph.D.. 1940). Dr. Coleman was also an authority on Loui- siana history and Creole culture in old New Orleans. Among his works was his editorship of the centennial edition of Creole Voices (1945): Poems in French by three Men of Color, first published in 1845. The foreword for Creole Voices was written by Dr. H. Carrington, hu- mer head of the Department of Romance Lan- guages at the Johns Hopkins University. This noted historian was also a member of Phi Alpha Theta, National History Honor So- ciety: Pi Sigma Alpha, National Political Sci- ence Honor Society: the National Social Sci- ence Research Council: The American Histori- cal Association: The American Academy of Political and Social Science. The Class of 1963 is proud to pay tribute to Dr. Edward Maceo Coleman—scholar, educator, and historian. 7 BOARD OF TRUSTEES First row: President Martin D. Jenkins. Judge Joxiali F. Henry. Jr.. TO THE CLASS OF 1963: Do you remember your first day here as a freshman when the President asked each of you to shake hands with the person sitting next to you —and you wondered why until he told you that handshake symbolized the fact that only about half of the entering class would persist until graduation and thus merit congratulations? That was the beginning of the “Lines That Link, 1959-1963.” Now you have successfully come to the end of your undergraduate careers. And so. Congratulations! As you look back over your college years you have many pleasant memories —these you will increasingly cherish in the years ahead. As I look back with you, I think of the extent to which Morgan State College has made an effective contribution to your development. We have at- tempted to help you attain the Goals for the Morgan Student, to prepare you for constructive occupational participation, to encourage you to go the Second Mile in your endeavors, to help you discover your creative talents. Beyond these we have tried to give you a feeling of con- fidence in yourselves and to lift your levels of aspiration. The success of our efforts will be re- vealed only by the Lines That Link after 1963. In the years ahead your achievements will be our achievements, your failures our failures, your successes our successes. To each of you I extend best wishes and, again. Congratulations. PROGRESS The Carter-Grant-Wilson Administration Building is named in honor of the late Mr. James Carter, former Assistant to the Presi- dent, the late Dean George Grant, former Academic Dean, Mr. Edward Wilson, former Registrar. This building will he located on the North campus between Truth Hall and Tubman House. The ground breaking ceremony was held on March 12, 1963. The Alumni Office, established on September 1, 1957, has made a great deal of progress over the years in building for the future of Morgan to the mutual advantage of us all. The constant interest and assistance of the Administration, Faculty and Staff have added new strength to the college and the Alumni program. The objectives are to help us to continue to be good ambassadors for the col- lege through our financial contributions, through recruiting of qualified students and the spreading of goodwill for the institution. One of the main purposes of the office is to build up mutual pride in our Faculty, pride in our Students, and pride in our Alumni Association. 16 Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities Left to right. Let us not stop now; we have the rest of our lives to live. If we are to continue to reap the reward of satisfaction from work done effectively through initiative and cooperation, let us never cease to live and be forever discontent merely to exist. Geraldine E. Sands Associate Editor 18 l PROMETHEAN STAFF We who dare . . . “fo write a living line must sweat — Ben Jonson MISS MORGAN 20 JULIA M. HANSON June 3, 1963, will be a momentous clay in the lives of graduating seniors, their families, and well-wishers. However, at this juncture, the senior should stop, reflect, and cogitate on how to give meaning to his life in this age of turbulence and anxiety. The following imperatives will facilitate one’s achieving at a high level in this world of un- certainty. To begin with, one must not be guilty of settling for low success, as opposed to risk- ing high failure. Secondly, one must cultivate a high regard for moral values as a basis for per- sonal and social behavior. Thirdly, one must not slip into a state of non-questioning and com- placent acceptance of issues in the political, economic, and social realms. The fourth impera- tive is that one must view education as an unending process and must always place a high pre- mium on the development of the mind. Finally, it would be utopian to think that any institution of higher education could produce at the end of four years perfectly enlightened students. However, our graduates should be aroused and curious enough to ask intelligent questions and to continue throughout their lives to reject a comfortable and smothering status quo. Jackson, Sprinter sm 60 When Editor Jimmy Dashiell was experi- encing the frustrating task of selecting year- book staff personnel, he proudly admits that the selection of the art editor was the easiest task which confronted him. “Carter Bryant.” the editor jokingly allowed, “had all the quali- ties that would make him an effective member of our team, in spite of the fact that lie's an artist.” Those who know the Florida born and reared Bryant can well attest to the truth of Dashiell’s remarks. But the fear of successful contradiction is even more remote when we assert that Carter’s ability as an artist renders him more than qualified for the task the PRO- METHEAN visited upon him. Bryant’s interest and success in art did not just happen. Rather, his developing “genius” was noted by encouraging teachers early in grade school. By the time he was graduated from high school, he abandoned his plans for studies in architecture and recognized that his “calling” was in art. Morgan has been the laboratory for his self-expression during the past four years. Morgan has not done badly toward Carter Bryant. Dedicated and interested teachers have guided him to tin point that many view him as a youthful artist to be reckoned with. His works have been displayed in several local galleries as well as galleries in Washington, D.C. and Atlantic City, New Jersey. During his junior year. Bryant's female torso in stone was shown at Washington’s Cocoran Gallery. This work was purchased by the College, and it is now a part of Murphy Fine Arts Center’s permanent col- lection. Several certificates have been awarded Art Editor Bryant in recognition of his dis- tinguished achievement. Bryant likes to work in several media. He has done creditable pieces in sculpture, painting and charcoal. He is especially interested in graphic art in the areas of design, color and photography. It is this area that Carter Bryant intends to pursue upon his graduation from Mor- gan. The PROMETHEAN staff thanks Carter for a splendid job done in its behalf. We salute him on his achievement. An revoir is inappro- priate here, for the art editor of the 1963 PROMETHEAN is yet to be heard from! Our Advisers Set the Curve Miss Annabel L. Hawkins is to be commended for the faithful role she has performed in advising the ’63 Prome- thean Staff. Many were the times when the staff could not have successfully avoided pitfalls without the encouragement and support of Miss Hawkins. While reflecting the fun and frustration involved in creating this yearbook, the '63 Prome- thean Staff must admit that Miss Annabel L. Hawkins has been a true leader of our line. Mr. Walter Fisher, our class adviser, will always he hon- orably remembered for his great interest and time devoted to the class of ’63. With his assistance and genuine interest, we have reached the end of the undergraduate line, ever as- piring to strengthen this foundation with the joviality and initiative Mr. Fisher never seems to he without. 64 And Our Officers Led The Line.
