Promethean 1 961 Published by the Senior Class of MORGAN STATE COLLEGE Baltimore 12, Maryland LILLIE CAROL LEWIS ROBERT PURYEAR Editor-in-Chief Business Manager WILLIE GOODE ANNA SQUARREL Managing Editor Literary Editor MISS ANNABEL L HAWKINS Adviser to PROMETHEAN -fiReflections . . . Impressions .7 Ant..- -....-.u- Bound to that jogged rock, suffering the tallows end heck of the vulture, Prometheus did not bend nor once repent his gift of light to man that his wretched being might gain understanding and rise to the heights of near godliness. Inherent in the tale of this most august citizen of Olympus tare the foundations of the Promethean Tradition of Morgan: the challenge to stand up and be counted, the commission of the second mile, the awesome call to achievement, and most evident of all, the Morgan pledge to keep the light of understanding burning that darkness may never overtake our striving for a better tomorrow. It is in the spirit of the Promethean Tradition that we, the class of 1961, have chosen as our theme: Reflections . . . lran-essions . . . Prelude to Glory For four years, the class of 1961 has lived and worked under the influence of the Promethean Tre- dition. Consciously end uncomeiously, we have been conditioned to respond to its incessant end insatiable demands. We have been manipulated and molded by it, end we have become the personification of its restless syirit. No longer can we close our eyes to ignorance; no longer can we wink at laxity; no longer do we accept mediocrity; and no longer can our ears be deaf to the cell for courageous striving. As we prepare now to take this step forward, this momentous occasion makes us pause for thought and reflection. What has been the meaning of Fair , Morgan to each of us these past tour vets? What 'bot'U'I- umah .A .6 . Prelude To Glory,i I has been her function in these final stages of out gestation before we emerge to take our place in the world? We begin with the Promethean Ceremony through which we as Freshmen were indoctrineted into the Morgen Spirit. We recall the care we took to keep the flames of ear eendles alive: the selemnity in the voices of upperelessmen as they sang the Alma Meter, the spirit of helpfulness among us as we re- lighted the candle et a companion and the sting of burnt fingers as we protected our own candles from the wind. All of these memories remind us of our purpose and revive our determination for excellence. Through the years, we have been impressed time after time with the importance of our position as future eonttihutere on the world scene. From the stand up and be counted eommistion of the Presi- dent, to the pause for inner-retleetion offered by heligiou-in-Lite-Week, to the reh, reh, reh of the t -sports activities, to the fascinating power struggle of the Mock Democratic Convention, to the all too reel activities of our men in uniform on R. O.T. C. Day, t the Morgan program he: been so oriented to em- phasize her expectancies for our performance as functioning and informed citizens. We come, therefore, to this point in our lives where, armed with the tools of education, we prepare to go torth, end, like Prometheus, to carry forth the benefits of the tire of learning to the world. IN DEDICATION Km A man is known not by the things which he possesses but by the things which poses him -Dr. Richard l. McKinney In choosing a person to whom we would like to dedicate the PROMETHEAN for l96l, our main con- siderations were neither educational achievements, organizational activities, nor any like criteria. It is certain, however, that the person whom we chose could meet any of these requirements. We were not even particularly concerned with any functions which he might have performed on behalf of Alma Mater although the fact that he was chosen Alumnus of the Year 1959-60 would indicate the outstanding quality of his contributions to the betterment of the Morgan community. We have chosen him for no other than the great- est and most difficult-to-meet of all reasons-for what he, as a man, represents. He is, in our esti- mation, the personification of that spirit which we have attempted to capture in Our theme- REFLEC- TIONS. . . IMPRESSIONS . . . PRELUDE TO GLORY. The qualities which characterize him are, in themselves, admirable, but no single characteristic seems enough. Dedication, devotion, humility, per- serverance, all of these words could be used to de- scribe him, but we do not feel that they would adequately explain our reason for thinking of him as we do. We believe that the quotation above from a sermon by Dr. McKinney does this best. Because we believe that all the positive aspects implied in this quotation best describe him, we, the staff of the PROMETHEAN l96l, dedicate our humble effort t5 the REVEREND HOWARD L. October I2, 1960 To the Seniors of l96l Greetings: Lost Fall in my Convocation Address I told you that your principal task as college students was to prepare yourselves for full participation in American life. It is in the mood of that occasion that I have interpreted your theme, Reflection, Impressions, Prelude to Glory. There can be no question but that the challenges of the years immediately ahead will provide oppor- tunities for unusual achievement on your part. As career persons, some of you will enter new and exciting occupational fields while others will face the challenge of developing and adopting new techniques in old, familiar vocations. As citizens, all of you will play roles in the social, political and economic life of your country As individuals, every one of you will make scores of decisions upon the quality of which will depend the direction and degree of your personal development, The true value of your college education will only be measurable in terms of the intelligence, responsibility and creativity reflected in the many parts you will play in the post-college years, Those of you who go the second mile in the de- velopment of your talents will make 0 lasting contribution to the life of your communities, your notion, perhaps even of the world It is through such achievement that you will add lustre to the reDutotion of your Alma Mater, As you go to make your place in the world, we who remain here at Morgan will watch you hopefully, our pride growing as your achievements mount. AUGUST MEIER History REFLECTING THE GLORY OF MORGAN On Christmas Day, 1866, soon after the end of the Civil War, Bishop Levi Scott of the Methodist Episcopal Church in BaItimore called together Thomas Kelso, William 8. Hill, William Daniel, and William Harden to establish an institution to train Christian leaders from among the newly freed slaves. Through the work of these men, with only $5,000 donated by the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church and without equipment, faculty, building, or students, the Centenary Biblical Institute was born on November 27, 1867. Students exempli- fying the rigid qualifications of youth and piety were chosen for admittance. Two yea rs late r, the first four Negros were elected to the Board of Trustees. Then, in 1872, the first building was bought at 44 E. Saratoga Street, and Reverend J. Emory Round was elected the first President. From Saratoga Street, the Institution moved to Fulton and Edmondson Avenues in 1890, and was renamed MORGAN COLLEGE in honor of Reverend Lytleton F. Morgan, Chairman of the Board. It was through generous donations by Reverend Morgan that the curriculum was expanded to include courses on the college level. The first graduates of MORGAN COLLEGE, in 1872, were four in number. The Reverend John H. Nutter became a Trustee of the College; Benjamin 0. Bird became the founder of what is now Mary- land State College; Reverend William H, Brooks be- came pastor of the Great Saint Mark's Church in New York; and Susie K. Carr became the mother of the present Methodist Bishop, Reilerend Edgar Love of Baltimore. Even before it became MORGAN STATE COL- . skhmt a A. m. 22 . -m. .1! t 1 LEGE, our Alma Mater was being distinguished. We note an alumnus who became the founder of what is now the University of Liberia, and we are inspired by the untiring devotion and dedication of John Oakley Spencer by whose efforts we were able to obtain the Carnegie Building and by whose fore- sight the present site of the college was secured. At Dr. Spencer's election to the Presidency, MORGAN became the first Negro college to have a President holding the Ph. D. degree In 1939, the college become MORGAN STATE COLLEGE mainly through the efforts of President Emeritus Dr. Dwight Oliver Wendell Holmes. At that time, our Alma Mater entered into a new era of her development or what Registrar Edward N. Wilson calls a third stage which was a threshold to glory. Since 1948, Dr. Martin D. Jenkins has been the President of MORGAN. He has attracted 155 gifted scholar-teachers, persons of strong moral and spir- itual persuasion who have found here at Morgan an ideal climate from which to make their contributions to society. Under Dr. Jenkins' administration, MOR- GAN has been characterized by rapid and significant growth. Tightened entrance requirements, revolu- tionary innovations in upgrading the curriculum, in- creased facilities, phenomenal growth in the physical plant have highlighted this third phase in the history of our FAIR MORGAN. While MORGAN STATE COLLEGE has grown greatly during the past twelve years, the demands of a progressive society require continued growth, and MORGAN'S answer to this challenge is reflected in the words of President Martin D. Jenkins'when he said, The apex of MORGAN'S destiny is still yet to come. . 'oang Future Building MARTIN D. Flemming, Director of Institute for Political for Political Education. When are we going to have another mock con- vention? This is the question asked about the Institute for Political education. The Institute, as it is fondly called, has managed to bring both fun and political awareness to Morgan State College. The Institute is sponsored by a $103,000 grant from the Ford Foundation. The Institute was first located in the annex building which has been des- troyed, and is is now located on the ground floor of Soper Library. Part of the funds is granted to four- teen scholars who show unusual political awareness and interest. The Mock convention iwhich selected John F. 68 Education; Dr, Dwynol Pettingill, Assistant Director of Institute KennedyT was the most popular program the Institute produced. Besides, Poul Butler, who gave the address at the mock convention, the Institute brought to Morgan outstanding political figures, such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Robinson and Val Phillips. Trips to legislation bodies, classroom discussions, radio programs, and forums have increased student interest in practical politics. The purposes of the program are to create a politi- cal awareness in the student body, to develop practi. cal politicians, and to increase interest in our repre- sentative form of government. Big E says Life is just a bowl of cheerleaders I37 LILLIE CAROL LEWIS I961 PROMETHEAN Editor-in-Chief At last! We have completed the final senior project. We have tra- veled over many bumpy roads, with tacks, broken glass, and sharp sticks. We were like the early American Pioneers in that we met with hardships and disappointments, ranging from heavy snow, which retarded progress, to lack of staff cooperation, which nearly stopped progress. But in spite of it all, we managed to meet the rainbow's end. With much work alternated with pleasure, the 1961 yearbook staff has presented to you the 1961 PROMETHEAN to assist you in reliving your college days at Morgan and to remind you of your friends to the extent that they may not be forgotten in years ahead. The PROMETHEAN, in years to come, will bring back memories of your apprenticeship in preparation for life; and in the days ahead, I sin- cerely hope that this publication will grow increasingly in value. I would like to thank our sponsor, Miss Annabel L. Hawkins; Dean Eugene Stanley; members of the administration and faculty; and students and triends who have given so unselfishly of their time to make this book possible.
