Hawkins Adviser_to Promethean S Xh5 V 7k DEDICATION To our teachers, for their untiring, patient efforts to develop our fullest mental, physical, moral, spirtual growth and for their eternal inspiration toward that which is good: To our parents, for their sincere encouragement, their unshaken faith in us, their illimitable support: To our posterity, for the inspiration which they may gain from our efforts: The Senior Class of -1959 dedicates this, their PROMETHEAN. 2 McKELDIN UNION 3 FOREWORD During the four years we have spent at Morgan State College, we have not only enjoyed some of the happiest days of our lives, but we have also suffered some hardships and disappointments; however, by constant perseverance we have at last reached the goal toward which we strove. As we look back over the past four years of our college life, we see an interesting picture—our shortcomings, our accomplishments, the opportu- nities we had but lost, how we have used our tal- ents—in general, a summary of all of our college days. What we have accomplished may not at this time be fathomed. We do, however, believe that we attained to the best of our abilities that which has been advanced to us from the various depart- ments of learning at this great institution—our Alma Mater. 5 FAIR MORGAN Fair Morgan, we love thee, so tried and so true; Our hearts at they name thrill with pride; We owe thee allegiance; we pledge thee our faith, A faith which shall ever abide. Chorus We pledge thee our love; we pledge thee our faith. Whatever the future may bring. And thus our devotion, fidelity, too, And homage we pay as we sing. 2. Fair Morgan, as onward the years quickly tty, And thou livest in memory sweet, We bring thee our laurels whatever they be And lay them with joy at thy feet. 6 Administration Board of Trustees SejteJ lefi to right: Dr. Willard W. With a common subscription to a spirit of brotherhood” and sis- terhood, the fraternities and sororities work hand-in-hand in promoting activities beneficial to the welfare of others. An unselfish attitude marks the spirit of co- operation of the Greeks. They are truly Greek” in ideals and achievement. Bruce Edemy President The objective of the Alumni Association is the same as that of the Administration—a greater Morgan. An effective Alumni program is a basic requirement in achieving our goal. The four years we spend at Morgan as students should inspire us to think of these years as the beginning of a relationship that will last throughout our lives. Morgan State College General Alumni Association The Alumni Office, established on September 1, 1957, has made a great deal of progress over the months in building for the future of Morgan to die mutual advan- tage of us all. The constant interest and assistance of the Adminis- tration, Faculty and Staff have added new strength to the college and the Alumni program. The objectives arc to help us to continue to be good ambassadors for the college through our financial con- tributions, through recruiting of qualified students and the spreading of goodwill for the institution. One of the main purposes of the office is to build up mutual pride in our Faculty, pride in our Students, and pride in our Alumni Association. As a major project, the Association formulated an ambitious program for 1959—the highlight of which is our $50,000 fund to help finance the graduate education of deserving Morganites. 108 Sallie P. Ponzo Executive Secretary Rufus E. Hackctt Alumnus of the Year, 1938 Participants in Alumni Traditions Day Activity, 1958 Presentation of Alumni Award to Dr. Martin D. Jenkins Josh Culbrcath World-Famed Alumnus of the Olympics, 1958 From the College Chaplain I am happy for the opportunity that comes to work, plan, study, and worship with the students and faculty of Morgan State College. One cannot estimate the value of the fellowship that has come through our working together in the many activities of the Morgan Christian Council, in planning the program for Rcligion-in-Lifc Week, in worshiping together each Sunday morning, in the quietness of the Wednesday meditation period and in discussing economic, social and religious problems at the Sunday evening hour. All of these varied programs have contributed toward the strengthening of our Christian convictions concerning the value of human personality and the mercy and goodness of God. As the coordinator, let me say a word concerning the work of the Morgan Christian Council—the organiza- tion of presidents and advisers of the Baptist, Canterbury, Newman, Schweitzer, Wesley and Westminster Clubs, YMCA, and YWCA. The mission of the Council is to the whole colege—students, faculty, administrators. We recognize that a Christian’s calling in the college is, first of all, to be a good student, professor, or adminis- trator, knowing that through his participation in the life of the college he may most fully convey his faith in Jesus Christ to others. The Morgan Christian Council is aware of the impor- tance of a united witness for Christ on the campus and therefore places emphasis upon the ecumenical move- ment, especially in its local manifestations. Clearly, our purpose is far greater than that of keeping students in their respective denominational folds. At die same time the Council faces realistically the fact of historic disunity among denominations from which students come, to which they belong, and in which they will continue to serve. The Council therefore places major emphasis upon a unified witness to the campus, while at the same time providing for denominational meetings and emphasis within a particular fellowship. The Christian Council seeks to coordinate, influence and encourage the activities of all individuals or groups seeking to make Christian convicuons effective in their personal and social relations in all aspects of college life. 110 From One Morganite to Another Today you arc undaunted, for you arc filled with great anticipation of the new life which awaits you in the accdemic world. After you enter your chosen professions, you will find the happiness of which you dreamed. It will be wonderful to enjoy the pleasures which you so richly deserve. Along with your joys, however, you will endure trying experiences which will sometimes dull the glow of glorious living. What will prevent your losing your grip on life? How will you oppose adversity? By courage and by faith. You must face your problems as true fighters. This means that you have courage. Then you muse have faith —first in God, whom you love but cannot see. Next, you must have faith in yourselves. Last, you must have faith in your fellow man. hoping that together you may achieve a better world. This world is yours, my friends, but only if you have the courage to face its complexities on the strength of your convictions and the faith to follow through.
