.5oteu ord We have played out a number of roles on the stage of life. We have learned many lessons that should aid us as wc prepare to try out for new ones. Wc have learned that we must always he ready and able to take our cue. A lapse of memory on the stage at a critical juncture may well result in utter ruin, not only for the actor, hut for the plav as well. Those who recognize their cues—preferred opportunities—will he well prepared to play the next role thrust upon them by life. In September, 1952, a group of ambitious actors arrived on the set which was Morgan State College. They had come from many parts of the country and the world. Some had starred in their former roles and others had had to be content to understudy. But now they could see themselves, individually and collectively, as the real star or stars of a star-sudded cast. Eager to prove their mettle and to be deserving of greater roles in the years that lay ahead, they entered ambitiously, with vim and vigor upon re- hearsal. The set was new. The scenes shifted rapidly and not all remembered their cues nor heeded the admonitions of the directors, producers and others behind the stage. Some were blinded by the footlights and tripped over each other to steal the show, falling to rise no more, booed off the stage by an unsympathetic audience. As the curtains were drawn on each successive scene and opened again, it was dis- covered with remorse by those who remained that some one of their friends had missed a cue—had failed to see and seize a preferred opportunity. Nonetheless, those who remained, true to thespian tradition, proclaimed: “The show must go on! True composition of the show has changed somewhat through these four exciting, meaningful years; new stage managers have appeared, new directors and producers, but all working toward one end-keeping the cast intact, preparing them for roles in the challenging drama of life outside the campus community. And those who survive must be humbly grateful to those who have given so much that we might be able to give more. l ime signals the end of the four-year drama, and we are ready to take our cues when new directors signal on-stage.
