MORRIS fi. SOPER LIBRARY PROMETHEAN Jt was to Prometheus, and to his brother Epimetheus, that the Greek gods entrusted the task Qf endowing animals with godlike qualities and powers. While Epimetheus was thus engaged, Prometheus occupied himself with creating man from clay. IP hen he demanded gifts with which to endow his new creature, Prometheus discovered that so generous had been his brothers gifts to the lower animals that nothing remained for man. He therefore determined to steal fire, along with the arts, from Mount Olympus and to bestow them upon man. Thus “Prometheus has come to have the meaning of life-giving, replenishment, daring originality and creativity and Promethean Eire to mean the divine flame with which Prometheus gave life to his images. PUBLISHED BY THE SENIORS OF Woroan State CotLj Maryland (organ Baltimore .5oteu ord We have played out a number of roles on the stage of life. We have learned many lessons that should aid us as wc prepare to try out for new ones. Wc have learned that we must always he ready and able to take our cue. A lapse of memory on the stage at a critical juncture may well result in utter ruin, not only for the actor, hut for the plav as well. Those who recognize their cues—preferred opportunities—will he well prepared to play the next role thrust upon them by life. In September, 1952, a group of ambitious actors arrived on the set which was Morgan State College. They had come from many parts of the country and the world. Some had starred in their former roles and others had had to be content to understudy. But now they could see themselves, individually and collectively, as the real star or stars of a star-sudded cast. Eager to prove their mettle and to be deserving of greater roles in the years that lay ahead, they entered ambitiously, with vim and vigor upon re- hearsal. The set was new. The scenes shifted rapidly and not all remembered their cues nor heeded the admonitions of the directors, producers and others behind the stage. Some were blinded by the footlights and tripped over each other to steal the show, falling to rise no more, booed off the stage by an unsympathetic audience. As the curtains were drawn on each successive scene and opened again, it was dis- covered with remorse by those who remained that some one of their friends had missed a cue—had failed to see and seize a preferred opportunity. Nonetheless, those who remained, true to thespian tradition, proclaimed: “The show must go on! True composition of the show has changed somewhat through these four exciting, meaningful years; new stage managers have appeared, new directors and producers, but all working toward one end-keeping the cast intact, preparing them for roles in the challenging drama of life outside the campus community. And those who survive must be humbly grateful to those who have given so much that we might be able to give more. l ime signals the end of the four-year drama, and we are ready to take our cues when new directors signal on-stage. DEDICATION In the dramatic work-shop which is Morgan State College, few have worked so hard, creatively, and will- ingly as Juanita Gladden Starke, to whom this volume is hereby dedicated. She was ever enthusiastic about furnishing potential actors with the basic tools, stimulat- ing them, listening to their woes, sharing their joys, and helping wherever and whenever summoned. For the PROMETHEAN. Juanita Starke has played many parts. Officially she was faculty adviser for the 1953 and 1954 editions, hut in fact she was everything from office girl to editor behind the editor. When youthful interests lagged or when some took assignments lightly, she relighted the conviction that the PROME- THEAN. too, is a stage on which all parts arc played— parts that make for growth, achievement, and excellence. Because of these things that we have been privileged to share, we make this dedication to her. 6 PRESIDENT To the Class of 1956 Dear Seniors: Farewell! Today you surge eagerly against the barriers which for four years have encircled you during a significant and most critical period of your training for the race cf life. We here can give you no more now other than our fervent prayers that you will run well the course which lies before you. Each year as 1 attempt critical appraisal of the young people who leave us. 1 seek anew the answer to a three-fold query: What did you bring with you to college? What did you find during your sojourn here? What arc you taking away? Surely it is not too much to hope that each of you brought to your college experience an open mind, eager and alert to absorb with profit a course of intensive preparation; that you found here friendly and competent guidance as you mastered the skills and forged the tools which are to serve you in later life; and that you take away a goodly portion of the Promethean spark with which to touch the lives of other people and inspire them to follow you in their quest for the good way of life. 'Phis to you is our farewell. Cordially yours MARTIN D. JENKINS President DEAN Dear Graduates of 1956: I have been asked to write a farewell note to the 1956 class, but “Farewell” is so final. Such a term implies that the graduate is relegating his college days to an absolutely completed portion of hir life. Likewise, it may mean that hereafter the student will have only memories which will gradually dim as the years flow along. 'I'he Morgan faculty and administration fervently hope that the motivations, incen- tives, and inspiration, which arc the concomitants of formal education, have been so ingrained in our graduates that the influence of the college years will continue to be potent forces directing their lives. It seems that we should not say farewell to our Alma Mater. For all of life we will continue to be important factors in the Morgan community. The real Morgan spirit demands nothing less. Therefore, I say to the Class of 1956. “So long, friends, until we meet again. In the years that lie ahead, I know you will not be satisfied with less than the best both in striving and in achieving. Today, you are SENIORS, living in a protected environment created largely by those who hold your welfare close to their hearts—tomorrow you again become FRESHMEN, stripped for that rigorous initiation which the world reserves for all. Accept your successes with modesty, endure your reverses with equanimity, and the rewards of the larger school into which you are now going will be as enduring and satisfying as are these which you enjoy today. JAMES H. CARTER Assistant to the President ASSISTANT DEAN To The Class of 1956: Your college career has had as one of its ob- jectives the arousing of vour consciousness that man is master of his own fate. The intellectual standards we set for you here were to prepare you to take up your responsibilities in the face of an uncertain destiny. We have inculcated the tools of learning within you so that you may face the world . . . and your destiny . . . with dignity. We hope we have succeeded. So, with love and confidence. I bid you fare- well and good luck. ARTHUR C. BANKS, JR. Assistant Dean I I C omptrodler Congratulation l ecfistrcu To the Class of 1956 Greetings: Vou have tarried here for four years, during which period you have survived the rigorous academic require- ments, you have developed from the adolescence to the young adult, and you have reached another plateau in your life's goal. Howard Cornish, the director of the Morgan Christian Center, called together the presidents and the advisers of the various religious clubs on the campus. The purpose of the meeting was to plan effective activities for the on-coming Religious Emphasis Week. However, after having completed its initial tasks, the group felt that it should become a permanent body which would act as a coordinator of the activities which the various member chibs would be spon- soring. The group, therefore, elected officers and chose for itself the name Morgan Christian Council. The Council then became the supreme body in matters per- taining to the religious life of the campus.
