We're not brogging, but at least this year we've got one! And, By Soper! you haven't seen the last Promethean, either. We've attempted the impossible, dared the unknown—broken the ground for our brothers who are to follow. Copy! How was the journey through the publishing maze? Ask Cindy Crawford, Tubby Downing, John Washington, Dot Graves, Ted Patterson, Nick Haste—they'll tell you it was no play but all fun. We knew we had a job to do; there was no doubt that four glorious years of persistence, endeavor, and endurance should be chronicled. Make way, we yelled, 'cause the Promethean's coming! ROBERT KNUCKLES Editor promethean Knuckles Cloy Cox Patterson 30 Copy! We had our theme. Transition was the present indicative. We had our hands, pencils, type- writers, poper, and a plethora of other neces- sary materials. They alone, however, could not give you the 1953 Promethean. What did we need? We began gathering statistics on you, Joe and Jane Morgan. You were our protagonists; the stage, the book, we set, ready for the enactment now of this your drama, your story, your Morganarrative. Copy! Photographed, autographed and lithographed were you who never (we hope) lost faith in us who never aimed but to please. Data collected, facts assembled; pictures taken, fingers aching from the hectic pencil- jotting that was ours: through all this we labored to meet the zero hour, the deadline. And to think we made it! Copy! Then there was the problem of convincing you that the book would be worth all the effort you and we had exerted. You doubted us at first; you saw our toiling; you wondered if our pursuits were to any avail. But little did you realize that we held the germ of what was to be your story; your 1953 Promethean was conceived and reared in a tiny cubicle, second floor, Soper Library. And now the die is cast; the typewriters, silent; the covers closed on another Promethean story. But your story is here presented. Yours is only beginning. The covers of your book will be open for years to come. Copy! Yancey Taylor Haste Crawford Downing Walters Coleman Graves 31 Row 1: J. Collins, J. Cloy, R. Randall, R. Powell Row 2: H. TAYLOR By the end of our first year here, when we witnessed the graduation of the largest class in the history of the College, we had become aware that mediocrity had no place in the changing scene. % Through your sophomore and junior years, amidst the razing of buildings and the con- struction of new ones, amidst arduousness and frivolity, disappointments and accom- plishments, the national limelight centered on the changing scene. Your senior year has been crammed with last-minute details and you have had many ? misgivings about where you're headed and why—and yet you've managed to hold your own. All of us here wish for you all of the best in life there is, and do come back to this changing scene. Ours has been no ordinary relationship and therefore my pride in you is much greater than that of teacher in student. We started out together in the foil of 1949 filled with apprehension and assurance and together we have experienced four wonderful years in the changing scene. To the Freshmen, Class of '56, we leave, with a little envy, the priceless heritage of the chang- ing Morgan scene To Dr. Julius Taylor tour sponsor), the faculty, and staff we leave our sincere thanks for the many ways in which they have helped us, and we leove our names with the hope that we will be remembered for our contributions to this changing scene. To all the Morgan community wc leave this thought: you are the material of this institution and what you are, it will be. Our thoughts will be with you always and Good Luck. 106 acknowledgments Allow me, now that the crisis is passed, to perform a pleas- urable duty: To a faithful staff who tolerated temperament, stubborness, and apathy, and exhibited utmost sincerity and interest: To a host of lower classmen who contributed various and sundry annuals for study; gave suggestions; typed; and hoped along with us: To Mr. James H. Carter who felt our plight, and in his com- miseration with us rendered valuable and meritorious services: To Mrs. Grace L. Burke, Angel of Mercy, whose ready fingers helped lay the foundation of the 1953 Promethean: To Mr. William H. Zander, Jr., of the State Department of Budget and Procurement, who opened the way for us; whose wise and earnest counsel convinced us that the job could be done: To Jake Cox, the Man-behind-the-Camera, whose every flashbulb was our desire; who gave of his time freely and will- ingly: To H. G. Roebuck and Son, our publishers, who had faith in us, gave us grace, and made our glory, this book, possible: And to Miss Revella Clay, our adviser, whose skill and de- termination helped make our dream (and hers) come true: My heart-rendered gratitude. All that has been accomplished I owe to you. 107 Editor-in-Chief TO THE CLASS OF 1953 I well remember your very first doy ot Morgan State—that first day of Freshman Week when you met at 8:59 Morgan time in the Christian Center. You were a fine looking group of freshmen—albeit a little callow and a little scared. I told you that day, among other things, that we would have to say good-by to about hajf of your class who would drop out of college; and that to the other half of you we would be extending congratula- tions on commencement doy in June, 1953. So let me say to you—to each of you—congratulations! I remember lots of other experiences we hove shared during our four years together here. I remember your feeling of pride and satisfaction when you first ate in the Memorial Refectory, when you first recited in Holmes Hall, when you first played in the Hurt Gymnasium, when you first slept in Bonneker and Harper dormitories, when you first studied in the vivarium ( what's that mean? ). I remember, too, the muddy campus of your senior year! I remember how proud I have been of you and how much I hove boasted about your choir and band, your dramatic productions, your athletic achieve- ments—yes, even when you lost—your radio and television appearances, your debating competition. And my deep satisfaction at evidences of your increasing intellectual maturity as reflected in your performance in class- rooms and seminars, your creative achievement, your winning of recognition in competition with students of other institutions. I remember, too, the many times I have scolded you, pleaded with you, cajoled you about going to chapel, attending assembly, taking your hots off, general culture, paying your bills, keeping the campus clean, keeping the dormitories quiet—about the Student goals, the Morgan Spirit, the Second Mile! These things, too, were a part of your education here. These are the experiences—these plus the conferences I have had with you about a million things, the give and take of discussions in committee meetings, the chats at meals or at my home—that will cause me always to remember you as an outstanding class. As the years pass by, these and other memories will make your alma mater increasingly dear to you. On a Monday afternoon this June you will become an alumnus with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities thereto appertaining. Remem- ber that the good name of the college is at all times in your keeping, that active support rather than passive loyalty is an inherent obligation, and finally, that you should strive to give to someone who follows, a bit of the encouragement and vision which we earnestly hope and believe you have received here. Congratulations! March 23, 1953 Dear Class of 1953: March 26, 1953 Do you remember lighting your candles of knowledge at the Promethean fire during Freshman Orientation Week? For four years you have faithfully kept thot fire burning. The facts you have acquired, the concepts you have developed, the attitudes which have evolved, and your new points of view have served os fuel for your Promethean flame. It is the earnest hope of the administration and faculty that your intellectual curiosity has been so stimulated that you will continue to grow in wisdom and intellectual stoture. After June first you will cease to be a consumer and become a producer of a finer culture in which to live. It is incumbent upon you to always live up to your highest potentialities at all times. We have faith in you. Sincerely, (9. GEORGE C. GRANT, Dean March 6, 1953 TO THE SENIORS I have had the unique good fortune of knowing and evaluating the membership of thirty-six successive groups of Morgan seniors. You are the thirty-seventh, and while the size of the class makes it impossible for me to know many of you as individuals, your scholastic record is very impressive. You are to be congratulated on scoring several firsts in various fields, while the general level of scholarship is gratifyingly high for all. And this comes at a time when the demanding standards of our present day world are constantly being revised and expanded. If the program of your futures may fairly be predicted from achievement thus far made, your class will make a very worthwhile addition to our citizenry in the years which lie ahead.
