E IS THE PEP and energy of the school and commands the admiration of everyone. The rare per- sonality is Captain George G. Lorentz, our Assistant Principal. He plays his most important role in maintaining strict but fair discipline throughout the student body. Cap, as he is called, is the core of our Student Association. He has helped to build it up to What it is today, and under his superior guidance we have all had valuable character training and experience, which will more fully prepare us to meet adulthood. y Empehi is extremely proud to claim Cap as her own since 1919. He acted as R.O.T.C. and physical education instructor, until he obtained the position he is now holding. Because of his remarkable school spirit, he seldom misses a sporting event, and the ardent cheer- leading he renders has spurred our team to many a victory. Cap's uniailing good humor has been the source of numerous good times that we students have enjoyed in our four years at Morgan Park. A fathom- less source oi inspiration and understanding, he is indeed our best friend. A CAPT. G. G. LORENTZ Page 12

A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADER ' SSE QUAM VlDERl: This Latin motto appears on one of the banners hang- ing on the walls of Empehi. Its English rendition is, To be rather than seem- ing to be. This is an expression of the true spirit that should characterize every student graduating from the Morgan Park High School. The policies of the administration are so fashioned as to bring about this most desirable objective. They may be briefly stated as follows: Cll good citizenship, C25 de- mocracy, C39 co-operation, C4l student responsibility, C55 tolerance, C69 justice, C77 fair play, C83 an appreciation and a love for our common mother tongue, and C9l following the truth wherever she may lead. While we have no specific course in character education, we have seen to it that all of our school work is saturated with those traits which make for good citizenship. We aim to develop the whole individual-physical, mental, and moral. But the most im- portant of these is the moral. Failure at this point means a breakdown all the way along the line. In these times of storm and stress when it seems that the very foundations of civilization are cracking and crumbling, we need to build our individual lives and that of our beloved America upon the eternal principles of right recognized by all good men down through the ages. Finally, I should like to conclude my message to the graduating class of lune, 1943, with a quotation from the world's best seller. lt runs as follows: Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatso- ever things are of good report, if there be any praise, think on these things. ESTON V. TUBES, Principal, Morgan Park High School. Page 11

IN MEMORIAM Phyllis Grant flltlithreh fltlubr Rosemary Tlluubp THE splendors of the tirmament of time May be eclipsed, but are extinguished not: Like stars to their appointed height they climb. And death is a low mist which cannot blot The brightness it may veil. When lofty thought Lifts a young heart above its mortal lair. And love and lite contend in it for what Shall be its earthly doom, the dead live there And move like winds ot light on dark and stormy air. Adonais- Pe y By h Sh ll y Page 13
