:go fAe .gzniom in jA.eir 42,:5,, INCE WRITING MY last message for the Empehi Annual, our country has been confronted with world-shaking events. This time last year, we were still at peace with the world. Today, we are joined in con- flict with the forces of evil which would, if they could, impose upon us a Way of life altogether foreign to our national traditions of liberty, freedom, individual initiative, and equal opportunity. Our achievements in certain directions have been nothing short of phe- nomenal. Today we are able to determine the substances of which stars are made. Our airplanes outfly the birds of the air. Our submarines prowl in. the depths of every ocean. The power of our streams is used to light our cities, turn the wheels of industry, and fill the air with the concord of sweet music. But we must not forget the more important of life'sf imperatives. Harry Emerson Fosdick sometime ago said, lf we fail to recognize the supremacy of spiritual values, the pall bearers, who have carried out previous civilizations, await at our door. How long will our country endure? Will it, too, go the way of Greece, Rome, and other nations? The answer to these questions must be answered by each individual citizen of the United States. If we are determined to remain steadfast to the ideals upon which our Republic was founded, our future will be secure. We must regard such things as freedom of the press, freedom of religious worship, freedom of speech, right of assembly, trial by jury, right to own property, free education, and free choice of occupation as pearls of great priceeethe foundations of our democratic way of life. For the past six years, we have endeavored, in ourclass work at Empehi and through the activities of the American Youth League, to learn the real meaning and significance of our great democratic heritage. The acid test of what America stands for now confronts us. The crucial moment is at hand for us to give all that we have by way of willpower, determination, self-denial, loyalty, and devotion to our country. We must Win this war in order to pass on, unsullied to future generations, the greatest hope of earth-one nation, in- divisible, with liberty and justice for all. This is America! We shall not fail in this time of crisis. ESTON V. TUBBS Page 9

APTAIN GEORGE G. LOBENTZ has the rare abilities required of an Q active Assistant Principal. He is able to maintain strict but fair discipline throughout the student body. At the same time he shows the uncanny ability to inspire co-operation among the students. Because ot his uniailing good humor, Cap is often induced to participate in the various assemblies and student activities. He is very active in building up the'-Student Association and under his guidance we have all had much valuable character training experience, which has more fully prepared us to meet adulthood with a clear knowledge oi what is going on. He seldom misses a game and his enthusiastic cheerleading and cartwheels have spurred our teams to many a victory. Truly, his popularity with Empehites has no equal . . . Page 1 U Calafain 0 ren fz
