As the school year i937-1938 draws to a close, l wish to utilize this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to the members of the faculty and to those students of Empehi who have so willingly and unselfishly co-op- erated in making of this school year the success it has been. The year has been marked by many worth-While achievements. Another mile- post has passed. Time marches on! Opportunity is something represented as a mythical person having a lock of hair over- hanging his brow but bald behind. Opportu- nity had to be seized as it approached each mortal. When it had passed, it could not be seized and made to do one's bidding. lf we have failed to capitalize upon our opportunities during the year which has just been written into the records, may we profit by our past mistakes and look forward to the coming year with con- fidence and determination to make the most of our talents and abilities. Some Italian philosopher has declared, time is my estate. But an estate will produce nothing without careful cultivation, but will generously repay the labors of industry. Assiduous appli- cation performs a double function. It not only produces a bountiful harvest but in order to achieve this result, it must at the same time sub- jugate and lay low all noxious plants which choke the better impulses of our natures.
