Essentially, yes. It has the same normal tendencies. It also craves success and happiness. But yesterday these objectives Were gauged in material values, which were then easy enough to obtain. Emphasis was placed upon vocational training, preparation for a job, with the almighty dollar as the goal, and success and happiness depended on the possession of it. Today, however, the outlook is different. Jobs are scarce and not so remunerative as yesterday. Our young people must seek happiness through other channels than those Which only Wealth will open. Money after all, isn't everything in life. There are spiritual values which no money can buy. Can gold calm passions, or make reason shine? Can We dig peace, or wisdom, from the mine? Wisdom to gold prefer, for ,tis much less ii To make our fortune, than our happineessf' Life is a game with ever-changing values, and there has never been a time When changes have been so numerous and have come upon us with such appall- ing rapidity as the present. The youth of today must face these facts and meet them courageously. In his endeavor to play the game, he will need the sympa- thetic guidance of his elders, his parents and teachers. Their enlightening advice and comforting example will mean much to him. More than ever does it devolve upon the teaching profession to emphasize spiritual values rather than material values. I have played my part in this game, whole heartedly, trying to give the best Within me, unmindful of the score, and smiling even inndefeat, knowing that, in the long run, honest effort would bring the desired result. If I have contributed to the happiness and future well-being of the pupils under my care, I shall consider my part well done. WILLIAM SCHOCH 2lf..,,,,f y:...,, ....-Q. IBID Jack Schwarz Esther Jacobs Betty Tredwell Herb Welhener WI-IOS WHO-FEBRUARY lf-XCK SCHWARZ The name of Jack Schwarz will long be remembered in Empehi. Jack Was outstand- ing in athletics and class leadership. The at- tractive combination of ability, sincerity, naturalness, and the will-to-do made his character a most fitting example to hold be- fore the school. During Jack's career as a football hero he kept up his Work scholastically. When the time came for graduation, his class was proud to have him represent them at their commencement exercises. ESTHER IACOBS Esther held the highest oflice in the school -that of the Student Association President, held offices in Tau Epsilon, French Club, and Zoology Club. In addition to such a record, she has the credit of being a member of the Girl's Glee Club, Girl's Emblem Club, Girl Reserves, and Quilpen. She is the possessor of keen executive abil- ity and has a capacity for good hard Work. She ranked in the top tenv scholastically, and undisputably first in the hearts of her friends. BETTY TREDWELL She is a upeachyv person-this Betty Tred- Well, and she is a clever one, too. Certainly, only one with versatility could hold Betty's place in our ranks, She was Vice-President of her class, Re- corder for the Student Court, and a mem- ber of the Social Committee, Girl Reserves, Tau Epsilon, and the Girls, Emblem Club. It is with one regret that we see Betty's name in Who's Who -for there is a mark of finality in its being there, which means We must say good-bye to a regular girl. HERB WELHENER Would it be vulgar to say Watta man, Welhener?,' Truly, we find it quite expres- sive after glancing at his record of achieve- ments among us. First, and most important on the list- Vice-President of the Student Association. This honor is closely followed by: President of Board of Control, President of Hi-Y, President of his 4B Class, and School Chair- man of the Chicago Association of Com- merce Clean-up Campaign. ooo EMPEI-II 1935 ooo Walter Dickey Helen Banger Polly Stansbury A'llan McNeill XX!!-IGS WHQ JUNE WALTER DICKEY We may be wrong, but it seems to us that Walter Dickey has all the characteristics of a successful business man to be. And we have proof! He was manager of both the baseball and basketball teams-of the latter, for a year and a half. Also, he was an active member of the Finance Committee, nor do we forget his active work in the Hi-Y and Emblem Clubs. In short fas Mr. Micauber would sayj, Walter was an asset and will be a loss to Empehi. May we wish him luck! HELEN BANGER What are we going to do now that our versatile and charming Helen Banger has left us? It is hard to tell. Perhaps old Em- pehi will be able to limp along somehow, but it will be greatly handicapped by her ab- sence. During her stay here at Morgan Park, Helen was Vice-President of her Senior class, Chairman of the Student Court, Treasurer of the Girls' Glee Club and the Dancing Club, as well as a member of the Pep Committee, French Club, Tau Epsilon and Girl Reserves. PAULINE STANSBUPLY Polly is so tiny that it is a wonder she made her voice heard in this congregation of lum- bering huskies we call Empehi. But, she cer- tainly did. You see, Polly is very musical. Not only does she sing, but she plays the piano beautifully, as well. She was an officer in the Girls' Glee Club, and took part in several operettas-usually a leading role. Also, Polly was Vice-President of the Stu- dent Association. She was a member of the Dramatic Club and on the Executive Com- mittee. ALLEN MCNEILL Could we have a complete Who's Who without the name of Allan McNeill? Be- fore answering, consider what follows: This tall, handsome lad has become a well- known ligure around Empehi and his ab- sence will be keenly felt. He,s the top in baseball and basketball. Besides being an outstanding athlete, he managed to rank high scholastically. Allen was a member of the Emblem Club and the Senior Hi-Y. His is one honorable membership added to the lists of members of which these two organizations can boast. oooEMPEHI1935 ooo February BETTY MARTIN ...... . . . . . HERBERT WELHENER .... . . . Betty Tred- well Was the vice-president and in charge of the social functions. Doris Holtsburg was the secretary and Frank Fitch, as treasurer, was chairman of the budget committee. The seniors who were in charge of the various committees were: Adele Scott, ring, Barbara Wilcox, commencement, Jane Long, announcements, Muriel Burns, senior day, Caroline Smeck, assembly, Jack Kinsella, prom, and Donald Duffey, class gift. The February Class gave a successful prom at the Ridge Park Field House and a hilarious senior assembly. The Senior Class Day con- sisted of a Kid Day and a social that brought the events of their High School career to a climax. The last remembrance the school holds of these outstanding seniors is their donation of money to the stage for their class gift. JUNE CLASS The largest class to graduate from Morgan Park was the June Class of 1935. The of- Hcers of the class included: Herbert Cornel- ius, president, Helen Banger, vice-president, Dorothy Johnson, secretary, Walter Dickey, treasurer. The chairmen of the various com- mittees, elected by the Senior Council, Were: Thomas Jacobs, ring, Walter Hamilton, commencement, jack Penson, announce- ments, Ruth Reinhardt, senior day, Allen McNeill, assembly, Doris Nyvall, class gift. Helen Banger and Walter Dickey were chair- men of the social and budget committees re- spectively. At the time this annual Went to press plans were incomplete, but it had been plan- ned to spend one hundred dollars for a class gift, and to sponsor a spring dance. A branch of the Student Association has been organized and is functioning smoothly under the di- rection of its officers-Shirley Black, presi-- dentg Marjorie Secord, secretaryg and Fred Abrams, treasurer. Keith Ragel was elected treasurer but owing to the fact that he has transferred to a school in Rockford, Fred Abrams was appointed to take his place. There has been splendid co-operation on the part of the entire Freshman class and it is to this that we attribute the success of our new branch. Under the lead- ership of its faculty adviser, Sergeant H. E. Parrett and its club oflicers, it has done many fine things. During the year the club has presented a movie, given two informal par- ties, and the Annual Military Ball. This last event proved to be the social highlight of the school year. The club has a threefold purpose: first, to further the interest in the R.O.T.C.g sec- ond, increase the morale of the men, and third, to create a better and more friendly feeling among the officers. During the year the club has been hon- ored by having two of its members placed on the Brigade Staff of the city, The officers of the club for the first sem- ester were: Cadet Captain Bourke, president, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Miller, vice-presi- dent, Cadet Major Jacobs, secretary, and Cadet 1st Lieutenant Kammerer, sergeant-at- arms. It consists of thirty cadets of the R.O.T.C., who serve in the capacity of ushers when the auditorium is used for school and community organizations. The Usher Force receives no pay for these services except that which it earns from the sale of candy at the Friday night movies. This money, known as the Usher Fund is kept by the Ridge Forum. At the end of the school year twenty dollars are given as a prize to the three most efiicient ushers se- lected by Sgt. The letter- men were: Carl Anderson, Bill Overman, and the reserves, Paul Thomas, Tom Jacobs and Herb Cornelius. The team has fine defensive strength and if the hitting improves, has a good chance of finishing among the leaders. At present the team is in third place with two victories and three setbacks, The squad has many outstanding players but not enough steady men to round out a championship nine. Jack Brigham, stellar shortstop, is above the average, and with Banger at second, forms one of the best key- stone combinations in the league. Thomas at first, and Jacobs at third complete a good O o o E M P E H infield. Chuck Mooreman's work behind the bat has proved him capable of filling the shoes of Howie McAffee, last year's out- standing catcher. The outfield is composed of Captain An- derson in center, Overman in right, but when pitching, is replaced by Hartanov or Cor- nelius in left. The pitching staff includes Overman, McNeill, Gainer, and Yursis, who, as a sophomore, has shown promise of be- coming one of the best pitchers ever de- veloped in high school baseball. The rest of the squad consists of: Franzen, DiCola, Morrow, Larson, Dillon, Kosel, Snethen, and Boyens. As the annual goes to press the team has a .400 average and with fair success will qualify for entrance in the playoffs. 1 9 3 5 o c o Rich Owles Govedere Roper Anderson Hillier Housman Gribnitz Grinndal Ingram Wilz Kitch, Mgr. WRESTLING TEAM Despite the fact that the squad retained but five of their veteran weight contenders, this major sport completed the 1935 season with a third place in the South Section, and fourth in the city titles. Richard Roper, 135 pounds, won the first city championship for Morgan Park. Roper defeated every contestant in the field that evening, bringing home the first champion- ship in the school's history. Paul Govedare, 165 pounds, placed second in his class in the city titles. This defeat, suiered in the finals of the Chicago meet, was the first loss by Govedare during the season. Following for third place came Gene Rich, 100 pound con- tender for the title. Officially, the Morgan Park matmen suc- cumbed but twice during the season, these two encounters being with the Lindblom and Tilden boys, with top-heavy scores in favor of the opponents. After a somewhat dis- heartening beginning caused by losses in the two practice meets against Proviso, Morgan Park was confronted by Calumet in the first league meet, winning practically every en- counter. Following much the same order of the previous meet, Coach Antonides' boys walked off that week with four successive victories against Bowen, Fenger, Clark, and Morton. The George Rogers Clark School suffered an overwhelming defeat, Morgan Park winning by 56 points. As was predicted, the Lindblom squad trounced the Morgan Park men. Tilden also was victorious, winning the meet by a one- sided score in their favor. These last two defeats officially ended the season. The total number of meets in all, unofficial and league, were eleven, in the majority of which Mor- gan Park was Victorious. -EDWARD ANDERSON ooo EMPEHI1935 ooo 1 103 Govedere Hillmer FGGTBALI. PARKER 6 MORGAN PARK 7 Palka Morgan Park for the fourth time in succession tasted victory over their traditional rival Parker. On the opening kick-off by Parker, Captain Schwarz received the ball but was downed on the 16 yard line. Morgan Park drove in with a brilliant display of power out- playing their opponents when the crucial time came. Empehi broke into the scoring column when in the first four minutes they made a sustained march of eighty-four yards down through the opposing line. Govedere got into the spirit of the occasion a few moments later and pulling a quick kick from his assortment, put the ball neatly between the enemy goal posts. At the outset of the first quarter Parker got down to business under the scrappy generalship of their captain and opened the way for Ken Woods, a Parker full- back, who skirted and dodged his way for fifty-four yards into Green and White territory, thus making the score practically bal- anced. A misplaced kick kept Morgan Park in the lead. During the entire last half of the game the two teams were on a par with the plays shifting back and forth between the 20 yard stripes. ooo EMPEHI1935 ooo 104 FCDCDTBALI. CALUMET 6 MORGAN PARK U With hopes of swinging into high gear and at last trouncing the Calumet eleven, Morgan Park was disappointed at finding themselves on the short end of 6 to 0 score at the final gun. The first quarter opened with a lor of fumbling due to a very wet field. The two teams battled around in the mud, neither gaining much yardage. Coach Antonides, boys were especially surprised in the second quarter, when Calumet worked down to the shadow of the Empehi goal posts. Sunny Dulaga of Calumet broke through for a short sprint of four yards to a touchdown. Schwarz, the hard-driving fullback, tackled but Was unable to stick because of the mud. Morgan Park threatened the Calumet goal frequently although not seriously. With the Stearns Fitch Johnson exception of the third quarter, the Green and White had battled their way down to the ten yard line. Kawalchuck received the ball and fumbled. Calumet, evidently alarmed by the sudden acceleration, exerted all their power and brought the ball back. o o O E M P E H I 1 9 3 5 O O 0 FCQTBALI. HIRSCH O MORGAN PARK 13 The Morgan Park eleven showed its teeth for the first time of the year, defeating a weaker Hirsch team by a score of 13 to 0. After a few preliminary plays, Wall circled the Hirsch end, making a spectacular 3 S -yard run for a touchdown. The try for the extra point failed, but Empehi was in the lead at the half. The second half was characterized by the Green and White's continuous offen- sive and dangerous proximity to the enemies' goal. Palka, after a long march, finally plunged over the goal for the second touch- down and the kick for the extra point was successful. Xvall Thornally Schwarz oooi-IMPEHI1935 oo Pierce Webbe FGCDTBALI. WENDELL PHILLIPS 0 MORGAN PARK O Larson Upon returning to the scene of victory for the '33 team, White City, Morgan Park met Wendell Phillips. The fellows surprised their own followers as Well as Wendell Phillips by holding the opposing team to a scoreless tie. A week's practice was lost due to unfavorable circumstances. Both teams showed a powerful defense but neither had quite the needed scoring punch to push the ball over the last chalk mark. The most thrilling moment of the game came during the inal quarter. Morgan Park turned on a burst of power and charged to the Phillips' 6 yard line. The crowd, so thrilled by the advance, crowded down on the Held yelling encouragement, thus making it impossible to hear signals. The ball was snapped back into more neutral ground. Captain Schwarz, the great Green and White star, was the most brilliant performer on the field. His frequent and successful runs aided Empehi in threatening the Phillips goal, although not seriously, throughout the game. O o O E M P E H I 1 9 3 5 o o o 107 Overman SWIMMING TEAM The Seniors completed an unusually suc- cessful season, especially the second semester, in which they finished in a tie with Hirsch for second place in the South Section. Due to the fine coaching of Pop,' Maysack, they lost only one meet, that one going to the section champions, Tilden. The Juniors fin- ished with three wins and were defeated six times. Co-captain Yutch Overman, the senior star, was not only a consistent winner in the league meets but also received a second and a Hfth in the State Meet, two seconds in the City Meet, and a second and third in an in- vitational meet at the Lake Shore Athletic Club. Coach Maysack acclaims Bill to be second to none as the greatest swimmer to ever represent Morgan Park, and expects Bill to have a great future in college compe- tition. The names of Co-captain Alan Lidster and Johnny Stearns were almost invariably seen in the Senior winning column and this pair, combined with Overman, played the prin- cipal part in the team's success. Fred Baldwin was captain during the fall semester and his absence was greatly felt after he became ineligible in February. Captain Dick Armstrong was the junior star and received a second and a fourth in the City Meet. Other Junior qualifiers in the City Meet were: Art Pope, Junior back- strokerg and the medley relay consisting of Art Bethke, Art Pope, and Jack Grosscup. o L, o E M P E H I 1 9 3 5 o o o 108 o o o E M P E H I 1 9 3 5 o SEIXIICDR SWIMMING TEAM Roby Schenk Provancia Mix Kowalchuk Overmann Lidster Barker Webbc Coach Maysack Powell Jerome Stearns Coach Maysack Huls Kammerer Kerney Brown Riddle Pope Armstrong Grosscup Bethke 109 O 0 BASKETBALL Every year the coach must rebuild the Empehi quintet. This year Coach Baldwin, molded a team which, by the end of the season, was running in smooth fashion. The practice games looked rather discouraging. However, during the University of Chicago Annual Prep School Tournament in which Morgan Park defeated a favorite to win, La Grange, by a score of 31 to 28, the heavies finally clicked, The game with the powerful Roosevelt team, found the score a mere 33 to 30 for Roosevelt. After this pair of games, the team opened the season with a smashing victory of 27 to 13 over Harper. In the second game the quintet was unable to erase the lead chalked up by Calumet in the first part of the game and emerged on the short end of 51 to 21. Not daunted by their pre- vious defeat the Empehi fellows captured the next two games and finished the season with a .500 average. LIC!-ITWEIGI-IT The lightweight's unsuccessful season can be attributed to the fact that not once, during their entire season was the complete team in one game together. During the practice sea- son the team missed Paxton, Kosel, and Aph- ing, all of whom joined the squad in Febru- ary. During the regular season the team missed Captain Bob Johnson, who was in- jured, and Bert Hill, who left Empehi in February. Had all these players been to- gether, the results might have been different. Major letters were awarded to: John Dil- lon, Bill Blood, Orton Alkire, John Harta- Major letters were awarded to the regulars, which consisted of co-captains Leigh Gassler and Tom Gainerg Al McNeill, high point man throughout the season, Si Schuffert, one of the principal mainstays of the squad, Art Pope and Red', Morrow, who alternated at guard. Other members who received let- ters were Bob Havey, Bob Mathers, John Orr, Chandler Scott, and Byron Strandberg, man- ager. Banger and Snyder didn't see much action as they joined the squad at the end of the first semester. A great deal of the team's success is due to Coach John Baldwin who was, for a period of three years a member of the Notre Dame varsity and during bis last year occupied the team's captaincy as well as being an All- American selection. The players feel very fortunate in being able to have played under Baldwin and feel they have benefited greatly by his coaching. BASKETBALL nov, and Bud McKinley.
