STURGEON Erfifor-in-Chief Fuczzlfy Adviser The Clfmpebi jaetns 3 TUDENTS at Morgan Park have come to expect the Weekly edition of the Empehi News as a part of school, like report cards, containing the same amount of good or bad news, according to their separate tastes. In the eleventh National All-American Newspaper Critical Service con-- ducted by the National Scholastic press, the Empehi News was entered for the first time in the section for high schools with a registration of sixteen hundred or more, and although it was announced that the judges seem to have been more critical this year, our newspaper was awarded all American rating, the highest obtainable. Distinguished rating in the Illinois State Press Association was awarded the Empehi News at the State Convention in November. Bernice Glass, the edi- tor, was sent to the University of Illinois to represent the staff at this convention. Much of the success attained by the staff this year has been due to the direc- tion of Bernice Glass, editor-in-chief. Bernice has succeeded in maintaining an atmosphere of geniality on the staff, and it may be said that she seldom needed to assert her authority. Her graduation in June will deprive the Empehi News staff of an able leader and an excellent journalist. The other members of the staff who are graduating in june are Beth Gris- wold, Warren West, Janet Crosby, Helen Arnold, and Dale McDowell. Beth Griswold was editor of the editorial page entered in the National Scholastic Press Critical Service of which the judge of the Empehi News commented, A very attractive editorial page. Warren West has been editor of the sports page for the last year, and Janet Crosby has fulfilled the positions of society, associate, and desk editors. Success as the journalist who interviewed Igloo, Commander Richard E. Byrd's dog, has been awarded Dale McDowell. This story received special praise in recent contests. During the year, the paper attempted to interest its readers by adding special feature columns. The Hrst semester Muriel McClure, under the myster- ious name of Sid Eris, conducted a series of articles pertaining to horoscope readings. In the second semester, she quite versatilely came down from the stars to the bare figures and numerology. The Hour Glass, intended to comment on current events of school happenings, was introduced by Bernice Glass. A series of sports cuts were interspersed in the column of Athletic Comment by Warren West. In October a six-page edition was published which contained Halloween features contributed by the English classes. The feature supplement was super- intended by Jean Hatheld. To the guidance of Miss Margaret Sturgeon, who supervised work on the editorial staff, is due much of the success of the paper. XVithout her encourage- ment and advice the staff could have done nothing. Miss Helena Callis has supervised the copy in the second semester. Dur- ing the first semester, Mr. John Specht had charge of the business staff, but due to illness he has not been able to do this work during the last semester. Om' I-I1llldI'fl1',X'fI1!.'
