Dixon School Board: President Luther Campbell, Tom Todd, Don Kimbrell, Greg Superintendent Hall, Harry Jones, Katherine Hutchison and Board Secretary Minnie Thoss The current administration led the faculty and students during 1987-88 to a very successful year. Through the administrations support and guidance, success was evident in many areas. The advancement of every student was seen as an important goal and a special emphasis was placed on the Missouri Masters, and Achievement Test (MMAT). Mr. George Arnold, the new H.S. principal, helped the high school pro- duce a very successful year. Mr. Arnold came from Owensville where he served as principal. He is retired from the armed services, and he has displayed his ability to be a firm administrator - but still well liked by students, faculty, and community. DIRECTORS High School Faculty Teachers showed their spirit A Faculty Spirit Committee was formed at the beginning of the 1987-88 school year by a number of teachers interested in helping promote school pride and spirit. This committee proved to be a unique and valuable part of the year. The involved teachers felt that with the excellent student body and facilities that VHS had, there should be more pride and spirit shown. With literally hundreds of ideas, the committee began the year at the first football game with a pep rally, yearbook signing, and hot dog dinner. Throughout the first semester, many activities were promoted with limited participation. ‘Tiger Han- kies’ and ‘Spirit Ribbons’ were sold. Pep assemblies were organized and the faculty purchased Tiger shirts to be worn on game days. One of the highlight activities was the Christ- mas Tea. A Christmas message, class competition, and punch and cookies were enjoyed by students and facutly. The goals of the spirit committee were not limit- ed to athletic events. They tried to inspire pride within students individually, academically, and so- cially. With the help and encouragement of Mr. Arnold new ideas were implemented to make the school a more productive and enjoyable place to learn and work. Trevis Brown; L.A. Cafeteria Staff VHS could not function without the help of some very important people. The VHS bus drivers, cooks, and janitors per- form vital duties that some students of- ten fail to recognize. The bus drivers have a huge respon- sibilities placed in their hands. They must transport students to and from school each day and faithfully drive stu- dents to school activities in other towns. The VHS bus drivers transport students to experiences students never forget. The cooks prepare the food that feeds hungry VHS students after a long morning of studying. These eager ladies arrive at school at about the same time the students are crawling out of bed. Clifford Miller heads the outstand- ing group of VHS Janitors. The janitors clean up after the students and willingly fix whatever breaks down or is broken down. These three groups serve VHS stu- dents behind the scenes and the superior work that they do often goes unnoticed. Seated 1 to r: Linda Wilson, Gwen Blankenship, Marva Hutchison, Pat Duncan. Surprising many of their critics, the Tiger team finished the year with a 5-5 record and in fifth place. “They did a tremendous job. They didn’t have the talent that last year’s team had but they worked hard,” commented Whitehead. Injuries plagued the Tigers, with players missing one or two games at a time. This allowed young players time to play and gain experience, strengthening them as a team for the future. The Tigers began the year with only 9 lettermen re- turning. “We were a young team,” said Dennis Whitehead. Several instances occurred that made the 87-88 season unique. A fall windstorm blew down the old lights around the football field, causing several home games to be rescheduled to be played in daylight. The new lights were much brighter than the older ones and were a great improvement. A school record was broken by David White in the game against Iberia. White broke the old school record with a 75 yard punt against Iberia. Leading players for the year were: Lead- ing Rusher - Tony Campbell, 340 total yds.; Leading Receiver - Clint Dinkins, 340 total yds.; Leading Passer - Billy Jeffries, 717 yds.; Leading Tackier - Don Montavy, 84 tckls. A total of 23 players lettered for the season. A common theme for the year’s team was the players working together as a unit. The Ti- gers surprised a number of people by finishing fifth in the conference. They were a young team, gaining experience for the future and becoming a legitimate contender. “The biggest thrill of the year for me,” said Coach Whitehead, “was beating Blair Oaks, who was picked to win the conference, in Jefferson City in front of the governor.” TEAM VHS Opp. Knob Noster 0 26 Fayette 7 6 Warsaw 14 6 Blair Oaks 8 7 Kemper 40 3 Eldon 0 27 Osage 8 44 Tipton 0 27 California 0 20 Iberia 7 6 Varsity Row 1: Nelson Gross, Kelly Dore, John Applebury, Scott Herndon, Rich Williams, Danny Espinosa, Troy Ellis, Jody Vogt. After losing a close game to Tipton 8-6, the eighth grade was dominated in their next three outings. They were defeated by Eldon 36-14, by California 28-8, and by Osage 36-8. The team never gave up in any of these games, however. After losing to Eldon 30-6 in their first game, the seventh grade came on to play very well. California and Osage both tied the Tigers 14- 14 and 6-6 in games which Versailles dominat- ed. This team should be very competitive in 1988. Lady Tigers Have MAGNIFICENT SEASON On August 14 the pre-season of- ficially began with high hopes for the coming campaign. On November 3 it ended rather abruptly with a rare loss. The Lady Tigers ended the reg- ular season with a record of 21-4-1. Mixed among these victories were many goals accomplished. One of the major victories was a first place win in the Sacred Heart Tournament. The Lady Tigers finished sec- ond in Tri-County Conference play this season, losing only to the cham- pion Eldon Mustangs. VHS posted a 4-1 record but Eldon went unbeat- en and captured the crown. The regular season means vir- tually nothing when the District Tournament arrives. Versailles again hosted the Tournament and entered as the top seed. After a first round bye, the Lady Tigers downed the Osage Indians again to earn the right to play for the championship against the California Pintos. The home team destroyed the Pintos be- fore the visitors could blink, 15-1,15- 2. With the victory, the winners trav- eled to Liberty for the Sectional Tournament. A magnificent season ended rather abruptly at Sectionals as St. Mary’s High School defeated VHS in two straight games. It can’t be said that the Varsity Volleyball team did not have a great season. The team totaled a spectacu- lar 23-5-1 record. The Lady Tigers proved to be one of the volleyball powers of Central Missouri. With only two players graduating, Tami Randall and Christi Huffman, the remaining Lady Tigers will return next year to keep the tradition alive. The 1987 7th and 8th grade JH volleyball teams finished very exciting seasons under the direction of Coach Tanya Rhine. Both teams won their openers against Osage. The 7th grade team continued their winning streak, only losing 2 matches during the sea- son, both to Eldon. They ended the season with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses. Lori Schad played impressively throughout the season, while Rebecca Opie showed much improve- ment by the end of the season. The 8th grade team was led by the overall play of Deena Beeman, Cynthia Kendrick and Michelle Weekly. Jenny Shewmaker and Linda Salzman were strong servers through- out the season. The 8th grade team ended their season with a record of 4 wins and 4 losses. J. H. Volleyball Tigers Wrestle Tough Tiger Wrestlers, Row 1: Chris Hall, Mike Hibdon, David Hodgens, Pat Ray. It was a learning experience for all of the first year wrestlers that made up the team. Some of the most rewarding accomplishments were gained when Jim Dornan and Don Montavy qualified for state. The Ti- gers did not win any dual meets this year but wrestled all of the oppo- nents tough. The wrestling team did well at the Centrailia tournament, placing fourth out of 8 teams. Senior Jim Dornan placed sec- ond in the district and qualified for State. Don Montavy was first in the district and placed eighth at State. Sophomore David Hodgins placed fourth in the district. Senior Jim Dornan tackles a Lebanon opponent. Below: Tough practices make tough Tigers. Left: Don Montavy gains a win at the State Wrestling Tournament. Lady Tigers Press On “Press On To State in ’88” was the theme of the Lady Tiger Basketball cam- paign this year. When the season came to an end, one victory short of that goal with a loss to Ashland in the finals of the district, no losers were apparent, only winners, dis- appointed but not beaten and proud of their accomplishments and record. Led by six seniors the Lady Tigers proved that through unselfish teamwork, dedication, and preparation winning becomes an ex- pectation. Dreams do come true. Although this dream was not to be, the legacy left to future Tiger teams was one of pride in per- formance. The team record of 19 wins and 9 losses, 4 and 2 in the Tri-County Confer- ence, and wins over strong area rivals, El- don and Warsaw, placed this season as one of the best in Versailles history. De- spite the 7 losses, the team showed great improvement during the season. Near the end of the season, they started to run the offense as a team. They placed third in the Eldon Tourna- ment. The leading scorer for the season was Kelly Marshall with 75 points. The 8th grade girls basketball team ended their season with a very respectable record of 10 wins and 2 losses. Their 2 losses were both to El- don. But, they finally defeated Eldon in their fi- nal game of the season by a score of 46-21. They also placed first in the Versailles Tournament. The leading scorer for the season was Deena Beeman with 183 points. The Tigers finished the regular season with 17 wins and 10 losses - the best re- cord ever in the new school and the first conference champi- onship of any kind since 1978. The foundation of this years team was hustle, and good team speed. The players will be remembered most for their fast break and good outside shooting. The group gave what they could and played above their potential much of the season. Scott Rumbo and Tony Edgar served as co-captains. Tony Edgar, Billy Jeffries, and Brent Beckmann were se- lected to the Tri-County All Conference Team. Recepients of the team awards were: Offensive player of the year, Billy Jeffries; Defensive player of the year, Tony Edgar; Mr. Hustle, Kirk Skelton; Best Rebounder, Brent Beckmann; and most Valuable Player, Scott Rumbo. Row Two - Michelle Miller (Man.), Veronica Weekly, Barb Johnson, Tracy Niermeyer (Man.) The Lady Tiger track team was low in numbers in ’88. With their few members, the team did not fare very well in big meets. Individual perfor- mances were important for the team. The biggest performance of the Lady Tiger track team individually was by Barb Johnson. Johnson broke the school record with a discus throw of 103 feet. Sylvia Guhr was a steady performer all season in middle dis- tance races. The other Lady Tigers performed personal bests through- out the season. J. H. Teams Were Record Breakers The eighth grade girls track team had a record breaking year. Deena Beeman set a new record at the Lady Laker Relays with a discus throw of 100'1 . Beeman also set a new conference meet record with a discus throw of 921 . Michelle Weekly set a new junior high conference record by running the 400 in 66 seconds. Five new school records fell to the eighth grade girls track team. The 800 relay team of Amy Piker, Cynthia Kendrick, Tina Hutchison, Deena Beeman, set a new school record by running 2:03.53. Kendrick set a new triple jump mark with a jump of 31'2 . The sprint medley relay team of Weekly, Ken- drick, Hutchison, and Piker also set a new re- cord of 2:07.43. Nicci Long, Lori Berger. J.H. Boys Were Strong Competitors Quality, not quantity, makes the dif- ference” was the motto for the junior high boys track team for the 1988season. With only five eighth grade boys and eight seventh grade hoys on the cinders, the small hand made their mark in the Tri-County area. Although not conten- ding for team titles, each individual con- tested strongly in his event, consistently bringing home points and numerous ribbons. Chuck Ware, eighth grade, and David Hendrix, seventh grade, were the point leaders for the year as they com- peted in three events in each meet. The choir, along with the small groups, received top ratings at each of the three music contests they traveled to. The Senior Women’s Sex- tet, Versailles Ladies’ Sextet, and the Freshmen Ladies' Sextet achieved the honor of participating in the State Music Festival. Many hours of intense concentra- tion went into making Concert Choir the fine group it was in 1987-88. Choir students could often be found gracing the halls of VHS before their fellow classmates arrived or after they had gone home. The Concert Choir is the largest group or organization at VHS. These music students are to be commended for the goal of excellence they achiev- ed in 1987-88. The Tigerette Drill Team, consisting of five seniors and three sophomores, began their sea- son with Universal Dance Camp at Washington University in St. Louis. At camp they were as- signed a big sister to help them with any ques- tions or perfecting their routines. Their big sister also was a choreographer who worked with Tom Cruise on Risky Business, and with Prince and the Jetts on videos. It was the first time in many years in which the girls received a spirit stick and trophy for most improved. The teams most memorable dances were their annual light routine and Egyptian Lover, with their gold wigs and outfits made by sponsor, Mrs. Louise Jordan. One of the team’s favorite dances was Funky Town. In order to raise money for little items need- ed throughout the year, the team had a car-wash at Wal-Mart. The fund raiser became more in- teresting when a semi pulled in for a wash. The girls were paid $20.00 for the job. These changes were great improvements for the staff and helped the students to gain a better understanding of what it is really like to produce a newspaper. Computers were the key to improvements. The two portable computers, donated by Vernon Publishing Co., enabled the “Tiger Tracks” staff to do the work themselves that was usually done at the Leader Statesman office. The only thing the students did not do was make the final copies for Layout. Staff positions were also changed and new students were added. Having different positions, and new people helped the students to work to- gether and see different aspects of newspaper production than in previous years. The “Tiger Tracks” staff was made up al- most entirely of Seniors but the few Sophomores and Juniors made the future look bright for “Tiger Tracks.” “Tiger Tracks” Staff: Bottom-Sherry Bogle, Anna Tellman, Bruce Aeschbacher, Shari Sinclair, Kevin Ball. They concen- trated on making the focus of the book the important and unusual happenings that occurred during the 1987-88 school year. The publications class entails all of the procedures of creating a yearbook: Layouts, copy, photogra- phy, and design, everything except the actual printing of the book itself. Hours of late night, after school, and weekend labor were required to meet the deadlines set by the pub- lishing company. The small staff succeeded in this tremendous task. This organi- zation not only provided the usual ser- vices to the school, but also participated in rewarding community promoting ac- I' tivities. During the year NHS ran the conces- sion stand at the Powder Puff football I game, held Carnation sales on Valen- tines Day, and sponsored several pizza parties and a breakfast with the mem- bers attending. NHS week was a high- light of the year for this organization. During leadership day members aided teachers and taught classes in the ele- mentary and south school, junior high and high school. The climax of the week I was the candlelight induction where new members were initiated into this presti- gious honorary society. Officers of National Honorary Society were: President, Christi Huffman; V.P., Kevin Ball; Secretary Treasurer, Sherri Yoder; and STUCO Rep., Stacey Bolton. A unique success for the members was their effort to pass the school tax levy. During the election members posted signs in local business windows to publi- cize the levy needs. Matwarming “I felt that Matwarming was the best orga- nized tournament we went to all year. The awards podium that the student council pre- sented us was greatly appreciated. We finished third which was pretty good considering we didn’t have a full team.”-Jim Dornan, senior. Matwarming was a memorable event for wrestlers and students alike. Although Ver- sailles finished third at the quad, several indi- vidual performances highlighted the event. Jim Dornan finished first in his weight class and Da- vid Vogt finished second in his. Barry Garber finished second in his J.V. class. In the royal ceremonies Tami Markum was crowned the 1988 Queen and Jennifer Shirley was crowned princess. A noticeable addition to the event was the awards podium. The student council presented the Tiger wrestlers with the podium in recogni- tion of their efforts and accomplishments. This was the first year that the Tiger wrestlers had such a podium during their home presentation ceremonies. 90 The 1988 Mat warming royal ceremony David took 2nd at the Matwarming Quad. Frosted denim, oversized hoop earrings, mini-skirts, and crop tops were VHS fashion trends. The fact that students were finally able to wear shorts without being sent to ISS made shorts a popular item. Handmade friendship bracelets were a new trend and classic Levi’s denim jackets, high-top tennis shoes, and keds sneakers had not gone out of style.
