But by first hour, Sept. 3, Signs of Life” were evident everywhere. Whether students were in the classrooms or in the office the basic routine was back in full swing. Every activity of the 1986-87 school year brought our Signs of Life” in everyone. From the excitement of the voyage to the State Volleyball Tour- nament to the grind of everyday life, students did things that made this year different from any other. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS People...............4 Classes...................... 9 HS Sports................... 30 J.H. Coach Whitehead stat- ed that the Tigers held the lead and played close to all of their oppo- nents up until the 4th quarter. During the 4th quarter of many games the team seemed to lose steam and their oppo- nents pulled away. Coach Whitehead concluded that, “the season was disappoint- ing for the seniors, but the returning under classmen should im- prove and be contend- ers in the future. TIGER FOOTBALL ¥ Volleyball Turns In A Sensational Season MU Varsity Volleyball; Row 1: Barb Johnson, Becky Raines, Krista Thouvenal, Christi Huffman, Row 2: Coach Hodges, Jenny Fi- scher, Kelly Silkwood, Sallianne Thompson, Tammy Randall, Carolyn Barnard, Tracy Williams. What can be said about the 86-87 volley- ball team except, EXCELLENT! The team ended the regular season 15-5 and ad- vanced all the way to the State Playoffs. The team had 7 all conference picks; Carolyn Barnard, Tracy Williams, Tami Randall, Sal- lianne Thompson, Barb Johnson, and Kelly Silkwood; and 4 All District picks; Tami Ran- dall, Carolyn Barnard, Tracy Williams, and JV Volleyball, Row 1; Michelle Baker, Kelly Silkwood, Vannesa Dunklee, Crystal Dooley, Row 2; Leslie Barnes, Veronica Weekly, Coach Hodges, Pam Pryor, Sherry Baughman. Sallianne Thompson. 1986 VOLLEYBALL The objective for the 1986 Volleyball season was simple... to concentrate on each opponent one at a time and to not allow ourselves to look too far ahead. One major goal was to break the string of Second Place Finishes in District play year after year that seemed to plague the Lady Tigers. Who would have ever projected that not only would this 1986 team easily win the District Title but accomplish the victories at sectionals and earn the rights to compete at the highest level of high school competition? Many comments could be made concerning each player, the physical and mental development throughout the season, the support of the parents and friends, etc. However, it is more important to re- member that each individual player truly was of vital importance to the composition of the 1986 Volleyball Team. Each member has her own personal memo- ries of the season as well as those who followed the team. It was something that will be cherished forev- er. Best wishes and thanks to those that will leave us ... Krista, Sallianne, and Carolyn. The returning members will have only the mem- ory of what was but will have the determination and desire to strive for what could be theirs in 1987. We, the 1986 Tiger Volleyball Tearn and coaches are very proud and sincerely hope you feel the same. Jeff Lutman, Gary Croy. : r The varsity basketball team should be remembered as a team whose foun- dation consisted of various talents, team work, hustle and overachievements. According to Coach Hensley Our team was the type that required alot of hustle and desire to compensate for our lack of size. And it did as we finished with a 16-10 record; the first and only winning record in the new school. Gary Croy was first team all conference and Mike Beeman made honor- able mention. Gary Croy and Walter Woods were elected team Co-Captains and did a good job of displaying their leadership throughout the season. The 1986-87 season was a team effort and different players excelled from game to game. The Tigers earned two trophies; including Consolation in the Warsaw tour- nament and second place in the tough California Tournament. The tigers fin- ished 3rd in Tri-County Conference. One of the high-lights of the season was beating teams like Boonville, El- don. Helias. and playing California close in the finals of the California tourna- ment. Lady Tigers Have Winning Season The Lady Tigers were small in number this year with only 12 girls out for the sport. They made up for it, however, through their hard work and dedication. The girls got off to a slow start but as the season progressed they really “got on the ball”. The Lady Tigers reached Regionals for the first time since 1981. With most of the team returning, the future looks bright for Lady Tiger Basketball. The team had 27 wrestlers - a great number to finish with! Seniors graduating are Chuck Moesch, Jay Dunham, Jason Ites, Cliff Bradshaw, Ross Smith, and Kurt Hatfield. Those names will be missed since at one time all were state qualifiers during their wrestling careers. This year the Tigers finished 2nd at Knob Noster Tournament, 2nd at the Centralia Tournament and 2nd at the Versailles Quad. They showed strong per- formances at the Lexington Tournament and Mar- shall Tournament. The dual meet record was 2-6. We defeated Boonville and Centralia and we, lost some close duals with Helias, and Waynesville. VHS Wrestlers had five wrestlers place at District. Jay Dunham 3rd, Jason Ites 1st, Ross Smith 2nd, Terry Calahan 4th, and Kurt Hatfield 4th. Jason Ites, Ross Smith, and Kurt Hatfield advanced to state where Jason Ites placed 4th. The team finished 20th out of 60 schools this year. GOLF The 1987 Tiger Golf Team ended the year with a very successful sea- son, considering how young this year's team was. This year's team shot some of the lowest team scores in recent years. The team defeated all the conference schools at least once, except for conference champion, Osage. Only two of the top six players will graduate from the team this year but team medalists Jeff Jackson and Jay Dunham will be a big void to fill. But, with good young players coming up, the future looks bright for the Tiger Golf Team. Lamberson and Marshall connect on the 800-meter relay. As a result, everyone got a lot of playing time. The 8th grade girls, who also got off to a slow start, completed the sea- son with a 3-5 record. The 7th and 8th grade teams progres- sed almost identically as far as wins and losses throughout the season. 44 JR HIGH BOYS’ BASKETBALL Back Row: Coach Wood, Duane Johnson, Kelly Dore, Chris Sinclair, Danny Espinosa, Brad Yoder, Alan Bauer; Front Row: Ryan Nolting. Gary Higgins, Jason Huffman, Brent Stephens, James Evans, Chad Jackson, Rich Williams Junior High Boys' Basketball did not have a very winning year. The 7th grade finished with a 1-9 record. The 8th grade would down the season with a 2-9 record. Although both teams had losing seasons, both 7th and 8th grade improved greatly as the season progressed. Coach David Wood commented. With continued improvement and hard work, the 7th and 8th grade teams of next year should do well. Coach Linda Scott, Manager Sarah Opie, Asst. Coach M. It was the best record the 7th grade ever had. The girls lost their first 3 games and then went on a 10 game winning streak. Participation was good with 17 girls out. They took 2nd in the Eldon tournament. Two of their three losses were to California. The girls worked very hard and everyone played in every game. Some key players include Cynthia Ken- drick, Deena Beeman, and Michele Weekly. Amy Piker was the most improved girl on the team and also the best all around player. 8th Grade Girls’ Basketball The 8th graders ended their seaspn with a 6-7 record. At Christmas they had a record of 1 -5, but the girls returned from vacation with a new attitude to start a seemingly new season with a 5-2 record. There were only 9 girls on the team and, al- though they were small in size, they were big in capabilities. Jennifer Rouse was the MVP and Kim Shad was the most im- proved. All in all, the junior high Tigerettes had a great year. Coach Linda Scott, Manager Julie Raines, Asst. Coach M. With only two re- turning cheerleaders, they had to face the challenge of training an al- most entirely new squad. However, after they attended camp and spent many long summer hours practic- ing, they were ready for their sea- son. A special job of the cheerlead- ers was making the athletic team members felt special by putting de- corations on their lockers and spirit posters in the halls. One of their more popular posters was of a giant Tiger paw ripping through the center of a poster. The cheerleaders also helped to raise the school spirit through pep assemblies at the end of which each class would try to out do the others in cheering out their year of graduation. BLACK SQUAD GOLD SQUAD The High school Cheer- leaders were divided into two squads. In the above picture, the Black Squad, was Cindy Brown, Lisa Hedrick, Becky Raines, Susan Mainard, and Missy Kimbrall. Below, in the Gold Squad, was Julie Lucas, Sherry Bogle, Sherry Thomas, Sylvia Guhr, and Sherry Bullard. The Black Squad was in charge of cheering for football and boys’ basket- ball while the Gold Squad was assigned to cheering for volleyball and girls’ basketball. The teams al- ternated to cheer for wrestling. 1986-87 FLAG CORPS Susan Anderson, Tracy Reames, Sandy Grimes, Jeri Brimer The 1986-87 Flag Corps consisted of four Junior girls who de- voted their time to learn- ing and perfecting flag routines to use at their performances at the football games. The corps performed these routines to music pro- vided by the band. Their presence on the field of- fered a colorful and ex- citing addition to the band’s halftime per- formance. The Flag Corps can also be boastful of their new black and gold flags which also added to the school spirit. Their season began early in the summer in order to prepare a routine to take with them to camp, which they attended at Southwest Missouri State University. At camp the team got to know each other and spent many long, exausting hours learning new routines to use throughout the year. One of the teams more popular dances of the year was their Courtwarming Light Rou- tine which was performed to “Oh Yea and ' Legion . The dance was choreographed by team captain Lisa Loganbill, and co-captain Stephanie Deason. The Drill Team consisted of eight members with three girls: Lisa Loganbill, Stephanie Dea- son, and Mitzi Clark returning from last year. The five new members were Karen Bowman, Gina Heinerikson, Kim Pace, Jana Rouse, and Carli- sia Hilgar, who moved during the early part of their season. The Drill Team's sponsor for the year was Mrs. Diane Klusemeyer who also re- turned for her second year. Each day they planned activities. During this week each member was given the chance to cadet teach. This allowed them to become ex- posed to a classroom teaching ex- perience. Also throughout the year they had social activities such as pizza parties or nacho parties. They had one money-making project which was a bake sale. The FTA sponsor is Mrs. Fi- scher. The trials and tribulations that this yearbook staff was ex- posed to would have forced others to succomb, but this staff endured the unbearable pressures of threatening deadlines and flourished. Not even the temporary loss of candids and pictures could dark- en the spirits of the team called Yearbook Staff’. Although the majority of the staff was inexperi- enced, they rallied around the leadership of advi- sor Mr. Brown. Working together and combining as one, the team worked hard through many pres- sure-packed months in order to meet deadlines and finish on time. Only by working together could this overwhelming task have been accomplished, with success as the result. It was a learning experi- ence for all of those who were involved. It is a name synonymous with an almost legendary character, style, and personality. Ask anyone. They'll tell you. He is a good student and an even better person. Just ... don't ask about his attendance record. It is ... uh ... less than ideal. Even since band class four years ago he cannot seem to find his way to any of his classes. Despite his chronic absenteeism, George Franklin has found his way into the hearts of his peers. A school dance was even named for him. Ask anybody about him. You'll see a smile, just don't ask them to describe his profile. Calculus is no problem for George Above: George is very popular. Most of these students were in stu- dent council. These students spent all day col- lecting 2,700 dollars at the intersection of High- way 5 and 52. Although some money was donated by various area businesses, most of it was gathered from people returning home from the lake. Mitzi Clark and Missy Kimbrell, student council officers, were chosen to represent Ver- sailles on the Paul Pepper Show’s Muscular Dystrophy Telethon in Columbia to announce the M.D. Drives progress. Junior, Tony Edgar, gathering donations. Senior, John Gerlt 78 Alex Schwab, Amy Lutman, Jim Dornan, James Nikkei, Susan Todd, Mike Ogden, Tony Elliot were in charge of counting the days donations. The class, which had been nonexistent for approximately four years, reorganized again and exhibited much talent, potential, and ingenuity. The class was taught by Mr. Chris Concannon, who also taught the previous Speech and Drama class at VHS. The first semester stressed speaking and oratorical skills, while the second semester dealt with acting and other areas involved with the dramatic arts. The highlight of the year was the production of “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay . The students and their instructor worked nearly all of the second semester to make the play a success. Their efforts paid off and the play was a giant hit. The story about two young American girls travelling to and touring in Paris was extremely funny and entertaining. The students learned that producing a play was very hard work but enjoyable, too. The Speech and Drama class helped to make this year at VHS a cultural success! The Cosby Show hasn't been around long but is now an American institution. Cruz'n is back and remakes of such classic tunes as Lean on Me and Stand By Me were back on the charts along with bows and bobbie socks. Everyone loves Spuds MacKenzie and Alf and no ones loves Gumby or Buckwheat. Here today - gone tomorrow fads-n-fav's of 86-87. 83 CREATIVE WRITING Tear Stains By Trish Dout Like soft playing music they fall upon my face Trickling down like dew woven in drops of lace, Rolling off my cheek they fall far to the ground. With each drop carrying memories of the friendships I have found. Whispering hopes of happiness as I fill each thought of you. Bringing words of wisdom of a friend who is so true. Like gathering of flowers upon an open field I run to you for protection behind your loving shield. So if this lonely paper feels misty to the touch. There's proof of a salty tear-stain that says I love you very much.” True Wrestling By Steve Concannon 1989 Do you see those fat wimps on T.V.? They have names like Hulk and Honeybee! Most are crazy and insane But smart enough not to play the real game. They think they're bad and challenge everyone While anyone in shape could pin them just for fun. Do they use real moves I ask? Come on Bud, ya. you in the mask! These wimps make me laugh very much But the real humor is that they don’t even touch. This sport or show needs a new name Because True Wrestling isn't the name of this game. Who are these Russian Volkov wimps? With a little tattoo work you could pass them for Goodyear Blimps. The can’t even talk Much less walk! So I ask get a new name Because this makes true wrestling look like a shame! One Red Rose By Todd McCoin 1988 One red rose ... So delicate and fair, Royal beauty glowing For lovers everywhere. One red rose ... So stately, so strong, A stem of noble beauty A lovely silent song. One red rose ... A true gift from the sod, Especially for you on Valentines Day, And sent to earth from God. Last Night by Susan L. Mainard 1988 Last night the sky was clear, as I peered into the night. A million stars were visible, and each was shining bright. Tonight the sky is clouded, like a puddle from the rain. No brilliant stars are twinkling, and it fills my heart with pain. I compared our love to the stars above and my smile became a frown For they're more alike than I’d like to believe Little by little they’re all falling down. Faded Memory By Julie Lucas 1989 A faded memory I hold close to my heart, Like a worn out magazine when the pages fall apart. Time has slowly passed, still I hold the memory near, I’ll never forget it, for the memory is too dear. Sometimes when I am lonely and the world is unkind, The memory of your eyes is the only peace I can find. Our faded love of the past. In my heart shall always last. Together Again By Pepper Messer 1989 Today's the day for me and you to have a little fun, We ll run about and talk about underneath the sun. We ll walk hand and hand through the open fields, Singing joyous tunes of love to each other by a mill. We’ll love each other till the day. When one will forever sleep. The other will mourn, for their heart shall be torn, Waiting and waiting for their day to go home The presence of togetherness warms the mind and soul, But until the day when we could be together again The heart has an open hole. Then again we shall be together alone with beauty and light Beyond our visual limitations, To share the love so dear and true. That once was a part of our lives. But until the day when we are together once more, My heart will feel like a ton waiting and waiting, For you and me to be one D. Me by Lisa Hedrick 1987 Love is as delicate as a petal on a rose. It is softer than silk’ And richer than gold. Ours is a treasure. And one that is admired. From the sunrise of dawn. To the dusk when I retire. BIKE OF YOUR DREAMS By Lonnie Rayl When the sun rises into the sky, and the moon fades away into the hori- zon, Let you be far away, on the way to a peaceful future. As you ride in the bike of your dreams, Into the endless road of life. I STAND by Rosemary Calahan I stand atop this heap of earth. From the height I can see all of you. O, you great mighty leaders Trying to rectify the world With what you think is wisdom. Ha Ha! I laugh bitterly at your ploys. At my left, soldiers march. To the right, they don’t move. But this is just the beginning. Why do I pity your blundering souls? Because at the end are no people. At night we dream of magnificent things. that we always wish could come true, but for some reason it seems that they never do. We never can find, in our lifetime, the things we so long for, until we want more. The Match By Tony Piercy Standing and listening, the whistling sounds — than I am tossed upon the ground. I struggle and fight to get away. I think in my mind this man is going to pay. He rolls me over — I’m on my back. This man is tough, he gives no slack. I'm arching high to avoid a pin. He lays on me with a big giant grin. I kick real hard, the man fell off. The momentum flipped me over, now I'm on top. I squeeze and arched, his shoulders tou- ched. The whistle sounds, and I jump up. The match was over, the man was stuck. Spring by Karen Roll 1989 Spring is a special time, you can listen to the church bells chime. People having happy flings. stop and listen to the birds sing. The flowers are in full bloom, leaving you without gloom. The beginning of rain sometimes causes pain. My Friend By Neysa Richardson 1987 She’s always by my side whether it’s morning or night. People think she’s different, but I think she s fine. She has two separate personalities. The first is very quiet and simply very shy. She loves children and cares what people think. The second is very eager to get out and show everyone that she can have fun and be very outgoing. She truly doesn't have a care in the world. My friend is me. Storm Clouds By Susan Mainard Storm clouds gather in a tunnel around me My eyes fill with dark, gloomy haze My heart beats fast and my muscles are sore It seems I’ve been running for days. I’m running for love. I'm running from you I can’t stand to hurt anymore I’ve kept my emotions far back in a closet My happiness behind a locked door. I stop to listen and turn to look Hear only the pounding of my heart Then I realize that I never was running You and I were just drifting apart. The Season Flow by Todd Williams 1989 As the trees blow so brisk you can tell that spring is near and as spring arrives the summer appears and as summer goes on the fall draws near. Winter is almost here and this goes on for years and years. Beauty of Life by Mike Silvey 1989 As for light, it is the beauty of life. With no light there would be no life, so the world would be nothing. Therefore let the beauty of light come into your life. DEARL Y LOVED FRIEND By Bonnie Smith I think of you and suddenly grow weak, A single tear tumbles down my cheek. Your laughter and smile forever gone. But memories of you shall always live on. Your death came quick and bit us hard, A sudden crash of two fast cars. At the funeral we all stood, Trying to be strong like we knew you would. Your name can still cause tears. And forever your memory will be held dear. To everyone you were a friend. Always willing to lend a hand. Together we all mourn but try to live on, We’ll always love you even though you are gone! THE END OF THE END By Mike Yeokum The Reaper's blade fell on the nation, Demons and witches Saluted gods creation All man battled and killed with rage. This was death. The end, War at third stage. The bombs were dropped All humans and beasts fell. The innocent to heaven, The guilty to hell. The earth is dead Destroyed by the human race, Another old planet drifting in space. 85 FFA AWARDS BANQUET DeKalb Outstanding Senior - John Gerlt Star Chapter Farmer - Sheila Schuster Star Chapter Agribusinessman - Cliff Bradshaw Star Greenhand - James Marroitt Chapter Leadership Awards: Chuck Moesch, John Gerlt, Cliff Bradshaw, Tabbie Hardey. Some highlights were pizza parties, breakfasts at Pioneer restaurant, Induction, NHS Week, Selling Carnations on Valentines Day, helping a needy family, and running the Powder Puff game concession stand. Officers for the 86-87 year were: Krista Thouvenel, President; Kara Baumgartner, Vice-President; James Nikkei, Secretary Treasurer; Mike Hall, Student Council Repre- sentative. Becoming a member of the National Honor Society is not an easy task. Your road to NHS begins in the ninth grade; it also begins before that as your character, service and leadership potential is being formed from your childhood. To be eligible for NHS, you must be a second semester sophomore with at least a 3.36 GPA. If you are a junior or senior, you must take a weighted class. A sophomore must take a weighted class in his junior and senior years. Juniors and Seniors must main- tain a 3.27 GPA. To be eligible, students are asked to fill out a survey sheet that shows their activities in school as well as community activities. Students are asked to list their teachers, their weighted classes, and to write a paragraph showing why they want to be an NHS mem- ber. This sheet allows the Faculty Council to better determine the student’s character and service, while indicating the student’s desire to be a member of NHS. The student’s teachers are asked to evaluate each student on Character, Service, and Leadership, the teachers also recommend the student for membership in NHS or they give a negative recommendation. After all the teacher evaluations are compiled, a Faculty Committee gives a final deci- sion based on these recommendations and evaluations. 87 YASUHIRO NAKASONE Prime Minister. Japan f CIA. CP. rt 6 IJ9 HOMECOMING GAME This year the Homecoming Game was played against the Blair Oaks Falcons. Spirits were rising as students dressed up for spirit week. On Thursday night a Snake Dance was held for the first time in a long time. The Dance was lead through the town ending with a bon-fire in which a falcon was burned. Even with all of the spirit, the game was lost to the Falcons 14 to 6. 94 SPIRIT WEEK Spirit Week for Homecoming con- sisted of P. J. Day, Roaring 20's Day, Generic Day, Nerd Day, and Black and Gold Day. To pick these days a sugges- tion box was put in the library. The cheerleaders drew at random, the days from the suggestions. Spirit Week was fun because we got to do something out of the ordinary. The only way Spirit Week could have been improved was if more people would have participated in it. 95 HOMECOMING ROYALTY 96 The Homecoming Ceremo- ny was a wet one this year. Due to the intense rain and the wet field, the ceremony had to be moved to the track and the Homecoming Court pictures had to be taken in the gym. A Stroll Through Central Park” proved to be a beautiful evening for the students who at- tended prom. Throughout the week the elemen- tary gym was magically transformed into a park. The scenery included a gazebo, a fountain, and a caf§ where everyone could sit down and rest after tiresome dancing. At approximately ten, the music stopped and everyone listened to the reading of the seniors wills. As midnight ap- proached, and the party wound down, there was an air of sadness. The 1987 Junior-Senior Prom came to an end, but wonderful memories of a mystical night will forever live in our hearts. emo nes 14 tau? ai ta i, (Kia nujlil oj §vOc«l muMC, danc«ru}. io-jt dimmed. lijjliU, laujjR, arui iruj att kvaaia t v ijaij, fA ac alV. xanxctixIbcv, tacli paal sdioul duij a 4 pau4« jxom oua danciruj, xememfcex iKe pad, Oua JhaiAi o| nxcnxaxics, ak ui|4 v «tl lad.
