THE 1986 MIRROR VOLUME 65 MORGAN CO. R-2 VERSAILLES, MO. MEMORIES SHARED NOT FORGOTTEN As the doors to the school opened on September 3, 1985, the halls once again heard the slamming of locker doors, the kids walking in the halls, and friends reminiscing of the summer past and speaking of future memories. The school year of 1985-86 will hold many good memories. This yearbook, as yearbooks past, will capture mo- ments and hold memories that everyone shared. The yearbook staff wishes everyone good luck after they have left VHS. Administration The 1985-86 school year progressed successfully under the supervision of our new superintendent, Mr. Gary Dixon. The School Board, con- sisting of Katherine Hutchison, President, Bob Kimpton, Adminis- tration Assistant, Luke Campbell, Don Kimbrell, and Gary Dixon, Superin- tendent, and Minnie Thoss went to a meeting of the Missouri School Board to discuss school rules for the years to come. School Board elections also came up this year. As teachers busily made up their budgets for next year, the 1985-86 school year crept by. But the school it- self is run by another set of pepole just as impor- tant, the cooks and custo- dians. These people often have to sacrifice a normal lifestyle in order to arrive early enough or stay late enough to get their jobs done. The custodians keep our school clean and com- fortable while the cooks prepare the meals in the cafeteria. They all deserve our gratitude. Clifford Miller. Whether you choose clothes made from cool cotton or stone washed denim, you can create the look just for you. Light-weight shirts and pants in dark prints and patterns can be worn alone during the spring and summer, then easily layered and accessorized for fall and winter. Cropped pants with simple slip-ons or low ankle boots add a sharp look. The new oversized look is exciting and excellent for all figure types. Eye make-up matched to your wardrobe creates the look that is right for you. Clean, strong and healthy hair captures the latest fashion look you wish to achieve. Unusual fabric and combinations and colors also dominate the fashion scene in menswear. The tradi- tional colors of blue, brown, grey and black have given way to soft, cool colors designed in styles which stress comfort and versatility. Current television shows which have influenced fashion are The Cosby Show and Miami Vice. Susan B., Kim B., Carrie M., Keri H., Debbie A. Susan T. Jeff H. and Stacy C. Mike T. and Brad C. It is a chance to meet new friends, and to be with friends that we’ve know for years. Friendships not only teach us about others, but help us to understand ourselves as well. Lunchtime Students from all grades enjoy using the foyer for lunch. Where and what to eat are common lunchtime questions. There are sev- eral different answers. One is to eat at the cafete- ria. Meals cost 85c and include a main course, complements, and milk. Another choice is the snack bar which sells sandwiches and other foods. Sandwiches cost $1.10 to 90c while other items are cheaper. A home lunch is also popular. Any foods desired can be put in these personalized lunches. Candy, potato chips, and baked goods can be purchased for 45C and add a finishing touch to these choices. Walter W. shows his skill in P.E. Craig W. and Gina H. show off their art work. Classes The classes haven’t really changed at Versailles High. There are a few new faces in the classes and faculty. As always there is Chemistry, Human Physiology, and Zoology in the Science department. Then there are those students who choose to take typing and other business courses. Then there are those tough math classes. Don’t forget the English classes: College Prep., Am. Conflicts, Western Liter- ature, and Comm. I, II, and III. Last but not least are the creative and athletic classes. These classes are what make up the Morgan Co. R-II High School. Without them what would school be? Kim B. shows her typing skill. Without their hard work, our local community would not have been informed of all the happenings and events go- ing on in our school. As we all know, reporting isn’t always easy. It was a learning experi- ence for all of them, and because of their efforts, we were able to read about sporting events, banquets, honors, and even a little gossip now and then. Inside this place, the office aides work busily from day to day. Their duties include taking attendance each hour, an- swering the phone, writing tardy and absentee slips, and dealing with other win- dow traffic. They also have to run in-school errands for the secretaries or Mr. Snel- ling. A lot of work was accomplished, though often at the last minute. Practicing cheers, locker decorations, pos- ters, selling pom pons, and many other chores such as wearing uniforms during COLD temperatures were expected. It was not always easy to be enthusiastic when school spirit was at an all time low, however, the girls who were dedicated, will remember the fun times while they became a part of the excitement of a new school year. Cheer- leading camp is also part of the fun that the new cheerleaders can look for- ward to. Volleyball: Top. c. Dawn Ehrenberg, Tracy Parrish Girl’s Basketball: Top Tracy Parrish c. A New The Drill Team of the 1985-86 was made up of six members. These mem- bers were all new to the Drill Team experiences. This fact brought about problems but none that could not be overcome. Team Throughout the seasons the Drill Team danced many different kinds of dances. This variety brought experi- ence for the coming years. The Drill Team will come back stronger than ever. They kept up the successful Student of the Quarter. They even tried to boost school spirit by hold- ing many great dances, and changing some of the ideas of the school. The year was not a total success yet with the help of the Student Council the year was a lot of fun. Row 1: Erin Concannon, Lisa Barnes. Becky Jaco. They had a teacher appreciation and teaching week in which the members would sur- prise the faculty with in- teresting treats in the lounge. They would also student teach for some of the teachers in the High School, Junior High, or F.T.A. Elementary. In the spring, the officers attended a state- wide F.T.A. seminar at CMSU in Warrensburg. TIGERS HAVE SLOW YEAR Close losses and in- juries made the 1985 sea- son disappointing to the Tigers. New injuries com- bined with close losses to California and Fayette hindered the Tigers. The 2-7 record, however, doesn’t truly reflect the team’s ability and atti- tude. Season’s highlights included the Homecoming win over Tipton and Kris Hatfield’s setting of new records - 35 receptions, 429 yds. receiving. Another important aspect was that many younger players got some playing time and gained experience. Several players re- ceived All-conference honors: Kris Hatfield, Ken Bowman, Bo Camp- bell, Steve Lamberson, Alan Metcalf, Mike Hall, Kurt Hatfield, Ross Smith, and Craig Baum- gartner. Kris Hatfield was also an All-district pick. Ross dives for a few more yards. The Lady Tigers, determined and proud, hung together and fought diligently. The Junior Varsity continued to add wins to their record even though the team di- minished in number by the end of the season, in order to strengthen the Varsity squad with youn- ger talent filling the active roster. The 1985 Tiger VB Team will be remembered for their records, honors, etc. but they will also be remembered for their hard work, team unity and their creativity for “get- ting up for the game.” Optimism for the 1985 Lady Tigers can al- ready be sensed by the returning players. Con- tributing to this optimism is the returning Varsity experience and the desire to improve upon the indi- vidual and team goals. All District and all Conference Cristy White and Carolyn Barnard. TIGERS SHOW IMPROVEMENT The 1985-86 Varsity season showed improve- ment over last year’s Bas- ketball record. Experience and hard work were main factors in the improved 7- 19 Tiger record. Highlights of the sea- son included two trophies and wins over tough teams. The Tigers won a 3rd place trophy at both the Warsaw and Califor- nia tournaments. The win over Helias was also im- portant to the Tiger sea- son. Two Tigers made the All-conference teams. Mike Hall made the 1st team and Gary Croy made the Honorable mention team. Wrestling Wrestling is a very physical sport that im- proves all-around physical fitness. Each participant will benefit on an equal basis. This year’s wrestlers had a successful season. Seven of the wrestlers went to districts and placed. Then four of these people went on to state wrestling - Chuck Moesch, Jay Dunham, Ross Smith, and Kurt Hatfield. The weather proved to be fit for practicing on the track instead of in the gym. The team consisted of eighteen members. The seniors were Bo Campbell, Lanny Ritter, Brian Ho- selton, Craig Baumgart- ner, and Kris Hatfield. The juniors were John Calahan, Jeff Hughes, Mike Beeman, Jimmy Up- ton, Robbie Leuthen, mgr., and Jim Bielinski. The sophomores included Brad Chamberlain, David White, and Robert Kilmer while Jimmy Chipley, Steve Concannon, and Tony Campbell were among the freshmen on the team. It consisted of seven fresh- men, three sophomores, four juniors, and only one out- going senior. The younger runners will build up to a strong team in the next few years. There was a lot of talent on this track team. To name a few, Rosemary Calahan proved to be a good long- distance runner while Krista Thouvenel threw the shot- put. VHS Golf Golf, the sport of the coun- try club set, is one of the many sports available to the students of Versailles High School. Freshman through seniors can participate, all that is needed is a set of golf clubs and of course, skill. The Versailles golf team, under the direction of Coach Danny Jordan, was very com- petitive throughout the 1985- 86 season. The team placed third at district out of eight competing teams. Senior Peanut Frank will be missed for his prowess on the green. Peanut was the number one player on the golf team for all four years he was on the team. He went to state his junior and senior years, and finished sixth and tenth, re- spectively. Peanut also was honored by making the all-state team. His lowest score for 18 holes was a 69 and broke the school record. Fore! 1985-86 Golf team: (Row 1) Frank Schroeder, Robbie Dixon, Alex Schwab, and Jimmie Dornan. The School seems to pull together in a common goal. The compe- tition of the floats, the parade, coronation, and especially the football game bring that certain magic to our school. The winner in the 1985 float competition was FFA. The theme for the float competition was “Teachers.” The FFA used the idea of “Tigers Concannon the Cardinals Down.” The evening was topped with the game between the Cardinals and us. We won by a landslide. At half time Krista Thouvenel was crowned the Homecoming Queen. Candidates: Krista Thouvenel, Shannon Schumacher, Anne Baker FFA shows us a winning float. Michelle B. Council The Junior High Student Council had a very produc- tive year. Under the leader- ship of Kelly Stone, Presi- dent, Leslie Barnes, Vice President, Becky Raines, Secretary, Darren Klein, Treasurer, and Jenny Fi- scher, Recorder, the Student Council accomplished many things. To raise money, the Council purchased a button machine. This made buttons which were sold before school and at lunch. With the money earned, the Council painted the words “Tiger Spirit” on the south wall of the gymnasium. They decided it was time for a new flag and bought one for the outside flagpole. They gave Mrs. Moser a plaque for her retirement and Mr. Hayden received a $25 gift certificate to Arrowhead Lodge at the lake for the Council’s ap- preciation of his coopera- tion and support of what they have accomplished this year. It takes a good Student Council and good leaders to be able to ac- complish so much for a school in such a short time. Who knew that being in Student Council would mean publicity.
