THE 1985 MIRROR VOLUME 64 Morgan Co. RII Versailles,MO WHAT’S GOING IN The doors opened once more to begin that all too long nine months of school. In that nine months that huge building would be like a sec- ond home to the students. It was filled with the noise of talking and laughing, dribbling basket- balls in the gym, and the sounds of practicing from the music rooms. The promising aromas of gourmet cooking in the hall from the Home Ec room and the smell of burnt chemicals coming from the mad scientists' chemistry room. The year held hopes and excitement for some, and fear and dread for others. The year would be very much the same, but also very different from the others. Welcome to the year of 1984-85! You never know what people will expect of you, whether they will accept you and like you. A new teacher may have it a lit- tle harder. They must stand in front of many new faces and try to gain our respect. They usually know their jobs and what is ex- pected of them yet gaining our respect takes time and patience. A new class must try and live up to expectations also. The only difference is that they do not have a set pattern, only what we put in and receive from them. They also take time to gain respect. As a whole being new in our school is very hard work. If we try to make them welcome, we who have been here a while and those who are new will be much happier. 14 Classes New Students—Front: Kim Martin, Tina Watkins, Anne Baker, Tammy Metchnikoff; Back: Craig Wallace, David Finch, Doug Gregory, Brian Hoselton, John Baker Above: A new Student. Below: What a Cover Girl. What Sweeties!?! Classes 15 CLASSES DO MATTER Rough night, Mike? Classes make up every part of our day. We go to each with a small hope of learning or at least having a little fun. There are always memories of doing both, yet each class takes a little work—or maybe a lot. Each class, whether old or new, was meant for our own good. They are meant to teach about life and how life will be. We are being pre- pared for a future outside of this school. So remember each day as you sit in class that through the learning it may well be that you will be- come a prepared citizen of tomor- row. Lell: Calvin Klein's new line. Right: Bedtime for Bo Bo. f I don't get this stuff. Left: Once upon time . . . : right: What excitement! Student at hard work Can anything be that iunny. We hear the laughter down the halls every day, yet there are things that make us sad. One of these sad events happened during the 1984-85 school year as sophomore Charlene Comstock was killed in an accidental fire in her home. She will be missed by her family and friends. Classes 17 ITS HARD WORK! Kids, we've got trouble Yearbook started off the year with only two surviving from the year before, and a roomful of peo- ple who had no idea of what a cropper or a 3-R sheet was. Every- one had a lot of learning to do. The staff also had more to do than just class. It involved selling candy (always selling candy!) at lunch and at games. The staff also had the huge task of selling books for the next year, selling calen- dars, and putting the yearbook to- gether by deadline. Tim’s at the other end of the camera. For two and one half years the high school faculty saved their three cent profit from each bottle of soda that was sold in the lounge. What did they do with their small profit? They set out to redecorate their meeting area—the all important Teacher's Lounge. The teachers felt that the lounge was a cold and unfriendly place. They wanted a homey atmosphere, something warm and cheerful. To brighten up the lounge, they laid down new carpet, reupholstered the couch, added tablecloths to the plain tables, and rearranged the furniture. Although most of the teachers took part in the redecoration, two of the faculty added their own unique touches. Mr. Dan Lents add- ed his own distinct personality by donating a few paintings he had done. Mr. LeRoy Viebrock also worked extra hard by constructing the wooden furniture in the lounge. Not only can his talents be found in the lounge, but also in the library. Mr. Viebrock worked during the summer to create the bookshelves, cabinets, and many other wooden items that furnish the library and lounge. Redecorating the teacher's lounge was a success. The faculty's next goal is to save enough of their pop profit to purchase a new refrigerator to replace the decaying one. Because of the new, homey atmosphere of the lounge, it is a comfortable place to relax and visit. Bob started working when he turned sixteen. He took on the heavy responsibility of raising his younger nephews. Bob Gee has also owned and tamed horses, constructed pool tables, and hauled turkeys. He said that he was glad to have a steady job at VHS and he'd like to keep on working here. Bob and his wife Nancy have been married for twenty-five years. Get it Ripper! TIGERS REBUILD The 1984-85 Varsity basketball season didn't turn out well for the Tigers in terms of a won-loss record. The Tigers dropped several close games that resulted from a relatively young and inexperienced ball club. They finished the season with a 4-19 record. Head Coach Roger Nash remark- ed, We played several good teams tough during the early and middle part of the season. The kids played excellent, hard-nosed defense through the first two-thirds of the season. This made up for our youth, inexperience, and inconsistency of offense. Conference wins over Tipton and against California at Courtwarm- ing were two of the season's high- lights. Another promising aspect is that only one member graduated. The Tigers also have a good future in three sophomores — Mike Bee- man, Mike Hall, and Walter Woods who made 2nd Team All-Confer- ence. Coach Nash described them as good players who may play an important role in the coming year. Waller drives against his opponent. Coach Fox briefing the players. Varsity—Kneeling—Mgrs. SOME HIGH POINTS ... Under the leadership of new Coach Danny Jordan, the Versailles Tigerette Basketball team had some high points and some low points in their season. The youthful team, having only three seniors, tied for second in the Tri-County Conference race. Another high point was defeating Eldon at home after blowing a 1 2 point lead, Coach Jordan said, The girls showed a lot of character in bouncing back for the win. Wrestling is an individual sport in which each athlete carries his own destiny of fortune. Win or lose, we learn through this activity good sportmanship, mental, and phys- ical discipline. Throughout life we will win some and lose some and mental and physical discipline is a must. Wrestling reaches all of these areas. Six of the Tiger wrestlers made it to the finals in districts and went on to sectionals where they wres- tled one match in a do or die situa- tion for state qualification. Four wrestlers made it to state. Tim Campbell and Danny Oyler both placed 5th. John Dunham lost his 2nd round wrestle back. Dion Hibdon lost his 1st round match. 50 Wrestling First row: Alex Schwab, Chuck Moesch Second row: Aquino Wallace, Jim Dornan, John Sinclair, Tim Roberts, John Dunham, Ethan Bercume, Ray Whittle Third row: Coach Whitehead, Ross Smith, Sean Concannon, Dion Hibdon, Danny Oyler, Kevin Iman, Den- nis Vallandingham; Head Coach. The 1985 Girls' Track season was filled with many exciting and memorable events. Many records were broken and Conference, Dis- trict, and State results were very good. The team was made up of mostly new members with only three seniors returning to compete. Lisa Petty was a great contribution to the team. She has been a State qualifier for four years in a row. One record in 1985 that was broken was the 400 m. relay. The relay team included Carolyn Barnard, Krista Thouvenal, Tami Randall, and Lisa Petty. The second record broken was the discus. Lana Hutchison broke it with a throw of 101 feet and 11 3 4 inches. Lisa Petty, Lana Hutchison, and Carolyn Barnard are to be com- mended on their fine performance at the State Track Meet, Lisa Petty making it in the High Jump and the Triple Jump, and Lana Hutchison going with the discus. The Versailles golf team, led by junior Peanut Frank and senior Tony Stafford, was very competitive throughout the 1984-1985 season. Peanut Frank played in the num- ber one position and was a consistent medalist all season. Peanut was probably the best golf- er in the area this year and with some work and mental improve- ment he will be unbeatable next year, commented head golf coach, Roger Nash. Tony Stafford played in the number two position this year. The team consisted of a lot of young players who supported the varsity golfers well. Next year looks to be a great year for golf at VHS considering Tony Stafford was the only senior on the varsity. With outstanding freshmen prospects filling the gaps, next year's team is sure to improve. 56 Golf Above: Jeff concentrates on a putt. Above right: A walk to victory. They also purchased two ping pong tables for the students' use. Student Council is serious business for Jana and Gina. Go! Go! Go! This was the theme of the busy junior high cheerleading squad as they led the student body in many activities to further school spirit dur- ing the school year. Tiger t-shirts were sold in the fall. Over 150 were sold and the students who wore them and sat in the pep club were admitted to home games free. Assemblies held during the year featured, among other things, races involving players and coaches and cheers done judo style. The cheerleaders also put locker decorations on the players' lockers before each game and had a piz- za party at Christmas. Mrs. June Enowski and Mrs. Sue Nickels were the sponsors. Long dress, elegant suits and tuxs, it is almost a real life dress-up game. Yet the scene is perfect, the music right as the couples pair off. It is a Junior High Prom. The night's activities include dancing, fun, and the picking of Prom King and Queen. The king candidates were Jimmy Dornan, Craig Joy, and Tony Stevens. The queen candidates included Mitzi Clark, Tracy Hunter, and Tammie Hirschvogel. The lucky winners were Craig Joy and Tracy Hunter. They led the next dance with style and grace.
